Perceptions Of The Quality Of Life Among Residents Of Crete, Nebraska, James Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, X. Winston Yan, Steven Larrick, Blanca E. Ramirez, Heather Keele

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Crete, Nebraska, (population 6,028) is on the cutting edge of a global economy in which people are migrating to places that offer jobs and a better quality oflife. In the year 2001, when this study was conducted, Crete's local Farmland pork processing plant was expecting to increase its workforce from 1,200 to 1,650. In today's economy, these 450 new jobs are likely to attract workers from around the world. In recent years, for example, workers have come to Crete from Vietnam, Korea, Laos, Croatia, Serbia, Iraq, and from countries throughout Latin America.

This case study of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway points out that delivery of infrastructure like road and highways, especially mega projects, totally through the private sector is currently difficult. In the absence of such private sector capacity to take on this responsibility, the role has been creatively shouldered by the Maharashtra government by forming and supporting a road development corporation - carved out of its public works department in its primary mission, the building of essential projects in a timely fashion. The purpose of this study was to inventory various environmental and economic criteria for the region. In the second phase the data was analyzed for implications for development potential. In phase three the Net Available Land Analysis methodology will be allied on the town level to two towns that meet one or more of the three Economic Development Administration criteria.
