Planning Masters Professional Reports

Despite the fact that America is aging, the trend for many cities is to appeal to the Millennial (born between 1977 and 1995) and Generation X (born between 1965 and 1976) populations. Most literature in planning and urban development has focused on appealing to the upcoming generation of young professionals who prefer public transportation and living downtown in walkable communities. New building construction is expanding though new rental housing is mostly targeted toward those with higher incomes, affordable housing is not increasing to the same degree. Consequently, the realization of the growing need for affordable housing for senior adults has …

Factors Making A Street A Vibrant Place: Comparing Street Users’ Vibrancy Perception Between Main Street, Fort Worth, Texas, Usa And Inonu Boulevard, Sivas, Turkey, Bilal Caliskan

Planning Theses

Streets are one of the most vital parts of cities not only because they serve urban transportation, but also because they are critical elements of the public realm that people use to go to meet daily needs and interact with others. However, modernist urban planning has often ignored the role of streets as a public space and as starting point for public life because of the increasing number of vehicles on roads, rapid urbanization (urban sprawl) and growing demand for the single family home and the gated community concept. In the last few decades, urban planning has recognized that urban …

Housing stock from Arlington, Texas from 2015 – 2016 is used to determine whether this type of analysis is effective in measuring the existence of the proximate principle. It proved difficult to obtain a large enough study group when attempting to include multiple different structural attributes. Ultimately, it was shown that a much larger timeframe may be needed in …

Navigating Through Sex Business Regulation: A Case Study Of Crime Statistics, Kristina Marie Heredia, Enid Arvidson

Planning Masters Professional Reports

The world of sex business regulation can be muddled and confusing. In the past, cities banned sexually-oriented businesses (SOBs) on the basis that they were morally bankrupt and obscene. Courts have ruled that the First Amendment bars cities from regulating these businesses based on the content of the business, and therefore cities have found a way to regulate SOBs based on real or perceived negative effects that SOBs bring to the surrounding community. These negative effects are called secondary effects and their existence has been recently called into question. This report goes over the history of SOB regulations, studies that …

The Cultural Advantage Of Cities: Exploring The Cultural Industry Agglomerations As A Source For Economic Growth, Mohamed A. Bireima

Planning Dissertations

Interest in the cultural industries as a source for economic growth has risen to prominence in recent decades. The purpose of this research is to explore the role and contribution of the cultural industries for economic growth. The analytical framework is based on the agglomeration model, which links economic growth to the spatial organization of economic activity. The cultural industries exhibit a tendency to cluster in geographical space due to competitive pressures, which causes some degree of agglomeration economies to arise (Scott, 2004). The literature exploring the economic impacts of the cultural industries has focused on their agglomeration tendencies at …

Planning Masters Professional Reports

Creating a downtown revitalization plan for the City of Commerce can be valuable for not only the residents of the city, but also the students of the University of Texas A&M - Commerce. Downtown revitalization can be considered the "hotbeds of business creativity, neighborhood activism, non-profit entrepreneurs, economic diversity, and an attraction for visitors, seniors, and young talent" (A Healthy Downtown is Key to a Strong Community, 2013). Though the City of Commerce has potential to grow and nourish as a community, the steps have yet to be taken to begin the revitalization process. With the average age for the …
