Urban Design On A Global Scale: A Comparison Of Four Cities, Avery Grace Crower, Shane N. Strunk

This senior project encompasses an analysis of urban design on a global scale. The authors chose four cities to analyze using eight different urban design elements. The cities chosen were Los Angeles, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo. Understanding how each city exemplified the urban design elements, assisted the authors in conducting a compare and contrast of the most and least desirable design attributes within each city. The authors were able to conclude with important takeaways and lessons from the analysis and comparison.

The city of Atlanta has historically embraced isolated growth over integrated density, which has contributed to the city’s limited inventory of inclusive urban centers. This divisive approach to urban design has helped facilitate a city of extremes; with high regional concentrations of wealth and poverty. In today’s world, designers, planners, and policymakers are grappling with conflicts of climate change, habitat loss, and increasing diversity all during a migratory trend towards urban areas and higher densities of living. Creating public spaces that are both resilient ecologically and environmentally, while also creating a sense of place is essential for providing a higher quality of life equitably for all citizens.
