The Spatial Pattern Of Upper Income Class Residential Location In Rio De Janerio, Brazil, Regina Bienenstein Zoninsein
Architecture Master Theses
This study is about the residential location of the upper-income class in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It focuses on the spatial pattern of this location and its relationship with the characteristics of the natural environment and the availability of public services and facilities.
It shows that Rio de Janeiro's spatial structure up to the nineteenth century was similar to the Latin American Colonial Model: the city developed around the main plaza which concentrated the elite class.
During the nineteenth century, the first elite settlements were formed outside the city center in a spatial pattern which approximated to Hoyt's Sector Model: …

The Public Markets Of London Before And After The Great Fire Of 1666, Susan Henderson
School of Architecture - All Scholarship
Transition periods such as England experienced during the seventeenth century are particularly efficacious for the study of the development of design concepts as the controversy which is generated during times of great socioeconomic change heightens the contrast between the old and new, and more clearly reveals the relationship between the physical and the social and economic environments. The purpose of the study is to examine the rebuilt city in terms of the changing forces which shaped it. The scope is a detailed examination of one particular aspect of the post-fire reconstruction period -- the public market system.

Summary:
City planners have traditionally made an effort to understand the interrelationships between urban activities and various support systems, such as transportation, water and sewer, waste management, communications and energy. Food is also an important urban support system with a complex system of supply, distribution, and consumption. An understanding of the nature of the food supply and distribution system seems important, but in the past has not been an area of concern for the planning profession. It was the intent of this project to develop a basis from which to seek an understanding of the Knoxville food support system and …

The Uses Of Completed Landfills, Jo Anne H. Aplet, W. David Conn
The Uses Of Completed Landfills, Jo Anne H. Aplet, W. David Conn
City and Regional Planning
Completed landfills can provide the base for parks and other beneficial land uses, thus serving to recycle waste products into new forms. However, the conversion is not trouble-free. This paper examines some of the uses to which completed landfills have been put as well as the problems which have been encountered to date, and suggests actions which planners and solid waste managers can take to mitigate some of these problems in the future. Information is based largely on experiences in Los Angeles County, California, where landfilling has been both practised and studied over an extended period.
