The traditional residential neighborhoods represent the tangible memory of peoples' history, so they must be preserved and sustainable. Al Riyadh city has witnessed rapid urban development, which leads the government to preserve its heritage by developing the historic center ‘’Diriyah’’ and its surroundings over ‘’Wadi Hanifa’’, which includes setting environmental and social sustainability standards to ensure the continuity and prosperity of that region. The problem of the research lies in identifying the sources of environmental and social sustainability indicators and the mechanism of eliciting local ones by identifying the components of the traditional neighborhoods as well as the environmental and …

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

This study aims to determine the urban expansion in a specific area in the north of the city of Riyadh using Remote Sensing techniques and Geographic Information Systems based on visuals and satellite images. The study seeks to determine the size of the increase in housing units in a selected area in the north of Riyadh during the period from 2007 to 2019 by studying the change in the number of residential buildings and comparing the changes that occurred during this period based on data extracted from high-resolution satellite images. Many programs have been used in correcting and balancing satellite …

The Effect Of Straw Bale On Thermal Performance Of Buildings In Hot And Arid Regions, Riyadh City As A Case Study, Waleed M. Abanomi May 2021

The Effect Of Straw Bale On Thermal Performance Of Buildings In Hot And Arid Regions, Riyadh City As A Case Study, Waleed M. Abanomi

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

A huge amount of energy is consumed by buildings in Saudi Arabia to cool indoor spaces particularly during summer season. In this regard, attention should be given to the environmental design strategies in the design of buildings during the early stages in order to minimize the cooling load inside buildings. This research considered using straw bale as one of the passive solar design methods that could protect buildings envelope from the harsh outdoor environment. This research assesses the effectiveness of using straw bale as an insulator by conducting field experiments. Two experimental chambers were built to achieve the experiments. The …

An Appraisal Of The Arab City Experience In Running Urban Observatories, Tahar Ledraa, Abdullah Althabt, Majed Hallawani

Emirates Journal for Engineering Research

The paper sets out to evaluate the Arab city experience in running urban observatories (UOs). As Arab states face the challenges of staggering rates of urbanization (i,e; Kuwait 100%, and Qatar 99.2%), their cities require the provision of more services and more efficient urban management. As the world is witnessing some drastic changes such as the shift from government to governance and the rise of the civil society, the Arab city cannot be immune to such transformations. Some have lately adopted urban observatories (UOs) as a tool to cope with these changes. The government observatory type has been embraced as …
