The issue of access and discoverability is not simply a matter of permissions and availability. To identify, locate, retrieve, and reuse 3D materials requires consideration of a multiplicity of content types, as well as community and financial investment to resolve challenges related to usability, interoperability, sustainability, and equity. This chapter will cover modes, audiences, assets and decision points, technology requirements, and limitations impacting access, as well as providing recommendations for next steps.

Preservation Ethics In The Case Of Nebraska’S Nationally Registered Historic Properties, Darren Michael Adams

This dissertation focuses on the National Register of Historic Places and considers the geographical implications of valuing particular historic sites over others. Certain historical sites will either gain or lose desirability from one era to the next, this dissertation identifies and explains three unique preservation ethical eras, and it maps the sites which were selected during those eras. These eras are the Settlement Era (1966 – 1975), the Commercial Architecture Era (1976 – 1991), and the Progressive Planning Era (1992 – 2010). Preservation of and reinvestment in the built environment as a redevelopment tool has been used by cities and towns across the country, in many cases providing significant social, economic and environmental benefits. Potential social effects have often been the least explored aspect of sustainable development, especially with regard to preservation, yet they are often the most challenging, particularly given the potential for displacement.

This thesis reviews literature where the issues of preservation, redevelopment and sustainability intersect. A set of best practices was developed that can be applied to other cities and towns to help balance preservation- and equity- enhancing activities. …

In Massachusetts, nearly two acres of open space land is lost to development every hour. The Hunt Dental Building at 839 Ninth Street in Arcata is a one-story stucco structure with a quasi pavilion in the center of the front facade. A recessed entry contains a glass-paned door with sidelights and a transom light overhead. Front windows on either side of the entry consist of a narrow window with a small upper-division and a larger window which repeats the divisions. Small windows are found in the west and south walls, but the east wall is without openings and is now covered with a vertical-board siding, added after the 1979 fire which destroyed the three-store building …

The College Motor Inn property at 1645 G Street (AP#20-092-10) is recommended for the City's Landmark and Historic Preservation Overlay Zone. The buildings represent, both in their bungalow architecture and their original use, a significant period in Arcata's history when the Redwood Highway opened the northcoast to the rest of California. Built to serve those first auto tourists who came to enjoy the area's splendid natural beauty, the Barter Bungalow Court opened in August 1929 with eight units and was expanded the following year with the addition of another four units.
