Interior Design Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
Background Children spend a significant portion of their days in sedentary behavior (SB) and on average fail to engage in adequate physical activity (PA). The school built environment may influence SB and PA, but research is limited. This natural experiment evaluated whether an elementary school designed to promote movement impacted students' school-time SB and PA.
Methods Accelerometers measured SB and PA at pre and post time-points in an intervention group who moved to the new school (n = 21) and in a comparison group experiencing no school environmental change (n = 20). Difference-in-difference (DD) analysis examined SB and PA outcomes …

In The Folds: Transforming A City’S Identity Through Art And Social Purposes, Yichien Cooper
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
This autoethnographic narrative retraces my four-year journey as an art commissioner for a city that is transforming beyond the stigma associated with a significant role in early nuclear weapons to a growing agritourism industry. The looming pressure for change is just like when tectonic plates push against each other until there is a quick release, causing earthquakes and eruptions. In the midst of the changing forces, I consider how the arts fold in. There are two purposes in this article that investigates the complexity between civic development and art. First, I will (re)define and (re)frame (Short & Turner, 2013) the …

This paper documents the eight-year evolution of the Department of Architecture’s Comprehensive Design program at Iowa State University. Since its initial offering in 2001, we have attempted to deliver the NAAB requirement in a broad, holistic context, incorporating not only the required technical aspects of studio work, but also an urban, civic agenda and an emphasis on human, public space. The result has been a studio that is seen by the department and by partners in the profession as a model for integrative, collaborative work, and we offer techniques and suggestions for other programs with evolving Comprehensive studios.
The Impact Of Learning Environments On Student Engagement, Yanira Oliveras Ortiz
The Impact Of Learning Environments On Student Engagement, Yanira Oliveras Ortiz
Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Architects design schools every day, but the impact that their designs have on student learning is at times unknown to those that design the schools. Educational research has shown that a positive school culture impacts student achievement; among the factors that impact the school culture is having a safe school (K12 Insight, 2017). Pride, student behavior, and overall safety each impact a school’s culture. A sense of pride and overall school safety can be influenced by the conditions of the building where children go to school.
The purpose of this manuscript is to explore the impact architectural design had on …
On Craft, William Lentjes
On Craft, William Lentjes
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Craft is a relationship - a dialogue - between craftsman, tool, and material. Craft begins with the intent of all of these loci, and all of these loci are rooted in Being.
Being is known through the consciousness, awareness, and perception of a subject. Being is the inherent existence and totality of "what is."
Being crafts us; Craft imbues Being.
This thesis re-examines the pedagogical approach of an architectural education. The focus is placed on craft through presuppositionless phenomenology.
In an age of endless mechanized production and spiritless materialism, the practice of craft can teach us to return to the …

Polygons, Pillars And Pavilions: Discovering Connections Between Geometry And Architecture, Sean Patrick Madden
Polygons, Pillars And Pavilions: Discovering Connections Between Geometry And Architecture, Sean Patrick Madden
Journal of Catholic Education
Crowning the second semester of geometry, taught within a Catholic middle school, the author's students explored connections between the geometry of regular polygons and architecture of local buildings. They went on to explore how these principles apply famous buildings around the world such as the monuments of Washington, D.C. and the elliptical piazza of Saint Peter's Basilica at Vatican City within Rome, Italy.
