Boolean Architecture, Amber Michaela Stanfill, Tyler S. Sanford Apr 2019

Boolean Architecture, Amber Michaela Stanfill, Tyler S. Sanford

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

The Grande Boolean Concert Hall uses architectural features to draw in the passerby and creates a pull for those considering Knoxville as a destination. The design infuses natural curves into the downtown area creating architectural intrigue and seats just over 1800 patrons for concerts or events. Boolean logic informed the programmatic flow and overall form celebrating the three Boolean operations: difference, intersection and union. The geometries informing circulation, enclosure and organization were the cone, sphere, and ellipse. These geometries were operated upon to create a plaza, entrance, and roof geometry directly relating to acoustic performance. A detailed acoustic simulation allowed …

Infratecture: Infrastructure As Architecture, David Aaron Wright Jun 2018

Infratecture: Infrastructure As Architecture, David Aaron Wright

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

In today’s society, we are given a systematic way to understand, think, and ultimately, exist in the world. These systems can be seen in christianity, eighteen- wheeler trucks, veganism, or plane travel. All distinctively different, yet similar in that each one defines the way you project yourself. In the layered nature of infrastructure, there are two stages where this primarily plays out: 1 Logistics - Whats it takes to get the latest, greatest iPhone to the market/the money it will take, the labor, the energy. 2 Culture - The reverberation of getting the latest, greatest iPhone to market. How it …

Futurefictions, Mara Caoile May 2018

Futurefictions, Mara Caoile

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

futurefictions is the title of my self-directed project which contemplates about the speed in which a city changes over time in order to compose new and dynamic architecture that encourage the preservation of history and cultural resilience through the lens of contemporary urban narratives. The subject of study is Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, and a city that is close to my existence. Manila as a post-colonial society embodies the impact of how the sense of time affects the sense of place: from the remnants of past foreign occupations, to the rapid influence of modern globalization. Manila poses …

In Shadow Of Disaster, Meredith Rene Graves

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

People are drawn to places of safety, familiarity and stability – places they call home. The built environment then becomes a visible measurement of the security of a community: if structures are intact, so are the people housed within them. Yet each year with increasing intensity and frequency, natural disasters are wrecking buildings and communities all over the globe. The unstoppable force of a natural disaster remains undetectable and unpredictable, even with scientific experts employing the most technologically—advanced monitoring systems.

Due to its diverse landscapes and amount of coastal territory, the United States consistently suffers from natural disasters. According to …

Stationary System With Portfolio, Christina Elizabeth Owens Apr 2015

Stationary System With Portfolio, Christina Elizabeth Owens

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

This creative activity explores the possibilities of designing a professional stationary system consisting of a letterhead, envelop, resume, and business card. The process began with brainstorming about myself as an architecture student and how my style and personality can be represented through a graphic system. The logo design is very clean, simple, and playful, which reflects my personality and the way I design. It works to create a push and pull of negative space from the paper through the voids of the letters. The use of the deep red provides contrast and variety to the stationary system. As for the …

Sounds Of The City: The Complete Musical Story, Julie Marie Davenport Apr 2015

Sounds Of The City: The Complete Musical Story, Julie Marie Davenport

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

By using a barren urban site and reworking part of the existing fabric of downtown, this project turns part of Jackson Avenue in downtown Knoxville into a vibrant music center and a concentration of creativity. Bringing all parts of the music industry to one building, this project provides a single place for musicians to gather, learn, create, and perform in order to achieve success in the music industry. This project began with the concept of revitalizing the Jackson Avenue area and extending the downtown to increase activity in this area. Much of Knoxville revolves around music, and people will be …

Leap Collaborative: A Demonstration Of Sustainable Practices, Sierra Rose Jensen, David Keith Berry Apr 2015

Leap Collaborative: A Demonstration Of Sustainable Practices, Sierra Rose Jensen, David Keith Berry

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

Located on in the heart of downtown Knoxville along West Church Avenue, the LEAP Collaborative is imagined as a collection of landscape architects, engineers, architects, and planners who contract projects with an emphasis on sustainable design. Therefore, for the design of their headquarters, we wanted to express that commitment to sustainable design and display some of those practices clearly to the pedestrian and passer-by. One of the main goals was the clarity of programmatic pieces. The retail comes out to the street edge to invite shoppers. The laboratory, highly visible, pushes forward towards the street edge but is less accessible …

Omakuva, A Self Portrait, Haley Rose Allen Mar 2013

Omakuva, A Self Portrait, Haley Rose Allen

EURēCA: Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement

A Study Abroad Design Studio was held for the duration of one month in the summer of 2012. Helsinki, Finland was the headquarters for operations and Suomenlinna Sea Fortress Island was the site of focus. Eighteen students dissected and reassembled a site rich in memory, history, and narrative to create a chapel-museum representative of themselves and what they learned from their study abroad experience.
