Buried clay pipe irrigation uses a buried, unglazed clay pipe filled with water to provide controlled irrigation to plants as the water seeps out through the clay wall at a rate that is influenced by the plant's water use. Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

It is always challenging for decision makers to prioritize wetland conservation programs at the landscape scale. This study employed a GIS-based multi-criteria spatial decision support tool that identified locations with the highest restoration potential for wetland conservation programs in the Rainwater Basin in south-central Nebraska. Five indicators were considered to assess wetland restoration potential: (1) Vegetation characteristics; (2) Soil characteristics; (3) Water volume released from hydrological modification of agricultural irrigation pits; (4) Topographical depression status; and (5) Habitat condition. The results suggested 192 (1.6% of the total) hydric soil footprints as the highest prioritized locations for future wetland restoration programs. …

A major public health concern involving the elderly population is unintentional injuries in the home. Since elderly adults typically spend the majority of their time in the home, minimizing unintentional home injury hazards is crucial for this population. The Nevada Healthy Homes Partnership (NHHP) program is a grant funded effort that helps to improve the quality and availability of safe and healthy homes in Nevada. The effectiveness of San Luis Obispo wildlife easements and city open space utilized to preserve species of concern is correlated to the health and maintenance of the San Luis Obispo Creek. I propose that the health of the Creek be addressed before more open space is added to the green belt surrounding the city. This bottom-up approach to preservation will ensure all steps of habitat will function as they should.

This article describes an experiment that was carried out on an existing building to test the validity of the system ventilation efficiency equation for multiple-zone recirculating systems of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1. The system ventilation efficiency equation (SVEE) can be applied to buildings that use a recirculating air distribution system. It accounts for the fact that the return air carries some “unused” outdoor air, so that the amount of new outdoor air introduced at the air handler can be reduced. The SVEE is based on a mass balance but infiltration and interzonal mixing are not included in the formulation. Since infiltration …

Marine biofouling is the undesirable accumulation of microorganisms, plants, algae, arthropods, or mollusks on a surface, such as a ship’s hull, when it is in contact with water for a period of time. It also established an initial profile of perceptions within building industry professionals, identified the salient factors within those perceptions, and determined the level of these factors through a factor analysis.
