Community Space Planning And Design Guide For Enhanced Wildfire Resilience In Heber, Utah, Devin Macfarlane
Community Space Planning And Design Guide For Enhanced Wildfire Resilience In Heber, Utah, Devin Macfarlane
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The wildland urban interface (WUI) is the fastest growing land type in the conterminous United States. These areas are prone to catastrophic wildfire events. In response to rapid population growth, Heber City, Utah is planning a significant amount of development within the WUI. This thesis project is aimed at proactively addressing wildfire risk in the WUI of Heber through two main strategies: regional geospatial planning and public space design to create wildfire resilient communities. Researching principles of wildfire adaptive practice and planning for defensible space led to the development of a list of criteria. This list was developed in the …
Chinese Gardens: Solutions For Urban Nature Deficit, Zachary K. Warner
Chinese Gardens: Solutions For Urban Nature Deficit, Zachary K. Warner
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Research shows that time spent in nature is good for human health and well-being. However, as the world’s population becomes more concentrated in urban areas regular time in nature, especially extended time, is becoming more difficult to have. On the other hand, Chinese gardens can provide one solution to this problem because they have a unique way of providing a naturalistic space within a small area. Despite this fact, there aren’t many Chinese style gardens outside of China. Therefore, the objective of this thesis was to identify possible barriers to using Chinese garden design principles and construction techniques, then address …
Low-Impact Infrastructure: Development And Design Potential For Surface Application Alternatives For Subsurface Infrastructure In Yellowstone National Park's Upper Geyser Basin, Michael R. Pace
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In sensitive and iconic landscapes, such as Yellowstone National Park’s Upper Geyser Basin, construction and expansion of visitor services is hindered, and often blocked, by the potential for environmental damage that could occur during the installation of subsurface utilities. These utilities, crucial to the success of development, require an alternative method of installation when placed in locations requiring special consideration and protection.
Yellowstone, in particular, is faced with the responsibility of protecting limited hydrothermal resources while also providing access to the general public. Sub-surface utilities threaten this responsibility due to the unknown nature of much of the subsurface

A Critical Evaluation Of The Sustainable Sites Initiative's Guidelines And Performance Benchmarks 2009 As Applied To The Design And Development Of The Orem, Utah Intermodal Center, Jeffrey E. Dzikowski
A Critical Evaluation Of The Sustainable Sites Initiative's Guidelines And Performance Benchmarks 2009 As Applied To The Design And Development Of The Orem, Utah Intermodal Center, Jeffrey E. Dzikowski
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
In 2006 the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the United States Botanical Garden, and additional stakeholders joined together to form the Sustainable Sites InitiativeTM (SITESTM), an organization dedicated to the promotion of sustainable land development and management practices. As part of this effort SITES recently released its Guidelines and Performance Benchmarks 2009, a document which provides a voluntary guideline and rating system for the development, operation, and maintenance of sustainable landscapes.
This guideline and rating system is currently being tested through the Sustainable Sites Initiative pilot program, in which a select …

The Bear River is the largest tributary to the Great Salt Lake, with water volumes reaching up to 1.4 million acre feet of water. The river begin s in Utah 's Uinta Mountains and flows into Wyoming and Idaho before finally flowing south and returning to Utah. The river flows nearly five hundred mile s before emptying into Bear River Bay of the Great Salt Lake, ending only ninety miles from its origin (Utah History to Go, 2008).
Design Guidelines For The Historic Downtown Of The City Of St. George, Utah, Bronson R. Tatton
Design Guidelines For The Historic Downtown Of The City Of St. George, Utah, Bronson R. Tatton
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This document proposes historic preservation guidelines for the downtown area of the City of St. George, Utah. It grew from a summer internship with the city where I took inventory of the streetscape in the Historic Downtown and prepared recommendations in the form of a PowerPoint Presentation that was given to the city council. This paper summarizes the summer internship and introduces a more appropriate approach based on reflection of the intern ship. The new approach involves a thorough inventory of the historic character, in depth research of the historic elements that contribute to the historic character, development of design …
