This project follows the format of an undergraduate thesis typical to the Syracuse University Industrial and Interaction Design program. It was conducted over two semesters, one focusing on research, and the other on the execution of an idea from the data gained during this research. The project in its entirety has been entitled “All Work & No Play” in order to illustrate the current state that exists in many offices: that play and toys are both looked down upon and discouraged. Within the Syracuse City School District, students have been struggling to thrive in an educational environment that focuses on standardization. In 2012, only 48% of high school seniors graduated with a high school diploma in the city of Syracuse. Numerous theories have been discussed as to why students have failed to succeed, with a large portion of these centered on the problems created by the No Child Left Behind Act.

CONTENTION It is possible to create a physical environment which will serve as a didactic tool for both pupils and educators. The tectonic language will be didactic on three levels: that of explicatively detailed timber framing, that of participatory and reconfigurable play modules, and that of demonstrative sustainable resource management. The discipline of fiber arts has been in existence since the beginning of civilization to produce both functional equipment as well as aesthetically driven art pieces. The craft, at times highly specialized, often produces elements at the scale of the human body, due to the personal level by which fiber artifacts are produced. The making of artifacts and implementation of fiber art strategies have simultaneous cultural, environmental, formal, and gender-related relationships and implications. The main focus of this Capstone has been exploratory—self-educational. After having learned, during the course of my studies in interior design, about the methodology of biophilic design (literally, “life-loving”)—which deals with the human psychological affinity for the natural world and attempting to reconcile that with the built environment, in order to create spaces that protect both body and mind—I wanted to experiment within that philosophy, to build my own biophilic design skills.
