Forgotten Infrastructure: The Future Of The Industrial Mundane, Whitney Ann Manahan Aug 2015

Forgotten Infrastructure: The Future Of The Industrial Mundane, Whitney Ann Manahan

Masters Theses

The typical cycle of industrial use, disuse, and abandonment is no longer acceptable or feasible. This thesis investigates phased remediation and conversion of petrochemical structures and their respective sites with the intention of increasing both the socioeconomic vitality and environmental quality of the area.

The oil silo is an intriguing object and industrial artifact. Being close to one of these massive structures is captivating and there is something truly exciting and thought provoking about inhabiting a space that was clearly not meant for humans. These are qualities that provide opportunities to connect people with a site and create a place …

Refocusing Roles ...A Look At Refocusing Programmatic Emphasis From Living Units To Amenity Spaces In Apartment Living, Laura Mae Kneebone

Masters Theses

As growth within cities increase, so does the demand for living options within the city context. A cultural shift is drawing more individuals and families back into the heart of cities instead of fleeing to the outskirts of surrounding highway towns.

This increase in desire for city living has raised issues surrounding the lack of living options within the city that may accommodate those needing and/or seeking affordable living options. Micro-unit apartment housing has become the trending answer to this need, providing compact affordable living spaces within the core of a city. Micro-unit apartments can be currently found in most …

Working With Paul Rudolph To Make Rudolph Work: Reclaiming, Conserving, And Adapting Sarasota High School (1958), Katherine Marie Armstrong Aug 2013

Working With Paul Rudolph To Make Rudolph Work: Reclaiming, Conserving, And Adapting Sarasota High School (1958), Katherine Marie Armstrong

Masters Theses

Sarasota High School, designed by Paul Rudolph in 1958, physically embodies the central ideas of Regional Modernism that developed in Sarasota, Florida in the 1940s and 50s. Covered breezeways, monumental sunshades, deep overhangs, and sliding glass doors promote natural ventilation and sun shading as ways to deal with Florida’s hot climate. As an example of progressive architecture of the time, it is a seminal work of Rudolph’s and significant to Sarasota’s architectural legacy of climatically responsive, modernist buildings that captured international attention.

Sixty years later, Sarasota High School is now unoccupied and in a state of disrepair. The school board …

A Factor Analysis Of The Health, Safety, And Welfare In The Built Environment Toward Interior Design As Perceived By Building Industry Professionals, Dana Marie Moody May 2012

A Factor Analysis Of The Health, Safety, And Welfare In The Built Environment Toward Interior Design As Perceived By Building Industry Professionals, Dana Marie Moody

Doctoral Dissertations

This research study created, piloted, and field tested a new instrument designed to collect perceptions toward an interior designer’s impact on the health, safety, and welfare of the public. It also established an initial profile of perceptions within building industry professionals, identified the salient factors within those perceptions, and determined the level of these factors through a factor analysis. The Health, Safety, & Welfare in the Built Environment instrument was developed using a Table of Specifications based on the subject content that interior designers must be familiar with in regards to protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public …

Evaluation Of And Behavior Toward The Visual Retail Environment: Function Of Consumers’ Visual Aesthetic Sensitivity, Sarah Eubanks Wilhoit Aug 2010

Evaluation Of And Behavior Toward The Visual Retail Environment: Function Of Consumers’ Visual Aesthetic Sensitivity, Sarah Eubanks Wilhoit

Doctoral Dissertations

The primary goal of retail environments is to stimulate positive behavior from consumers viewing the fulfilled plan of the designer or architect. This study explores the influence of the consumer trait, visual aesthetic sensitivity, upon the visual aesthetic design features of the store environment and consumer behavior. Treatment of the visual aesthetic design features of the retail environment as an integrated, holistic arrangement demonstrate the dynamic interrelation of the environment and perception as explained by Gestalt theory. Data was collected through traditional survey techniques. Statistical analyses using exploratory factor analysis, ANCOVA, and MANCOVA reveal distinct differences between consumers with high …

The Effect Of Spatial Scale On The Variables Of Attention Of Eight- To Twelve-Year Old Children With Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder, Julie K. Nelson Dec 1995

The Effect Of Spatial Scale On The Variables Of Attention Of Eight- To Twelve-Year Old Children With Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder, Julie K. Nelson

Masters Theses

This study investigated the effects of scale-reduced environments on measures of attention for children with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). A theory of experimental space-time relativity proposes that small-scaled spaces alter one's temporal experience which can in turn improve the efficiency of that individual's information processing. The independent variable was a scale-reduced space. The dependent variable was the Test of Variables of Attention (T.O.V.A., Greenberg, 1987). The purpose of the study was to demonstrate that a simple, harmless, drug-free intervention could improve an ADHD child's ability to attend to information and perform by altering the child's temporal experience. It was hypothesized …

Lakeshore Mental Health Institute - The Chota Building Lobby: A Case Study Of Perceived Image, Patricia J. Milan

Masters Theses

The community Image of mental institutions has long been a negative one. Although many studies have examined the effect of the interior physical environment on patients m mental institutions, very little has been done to explore the effect of the interior environment of mental hospitals on public opinion. This case study was designed to determine if the physical environment plays a significant role m how various people of the community perceive Lakeshore Chota building lobby, and how their opinion may differ from viewing the existing lobby and then a 1" = 1 '0" scale model of the lobby renovated. The …

The Effects Of Pattern Scale In The Near Environment On Preschool Play Behavior, Janis Brickey May 1994

The Effects Of Pattern Scale In The Near Environment On Preschool Play Behavior, Janis Brickey

Masters Theses

This research investigated if scaled pattern designs affect children's play behavior, specifically play segment length. The sample included three and four year old children at a child development laboratory. The behavioral setting analyzed was located in an existing quiet area during free play. Under control conditions, the spatial area, 42" x 42" x 36", was regulated to validate the experimental conditions. Subjects acted as their own controls while playing under three conditions, control and two experimental (large and small pattern applied to vertical surfaces). Data were collected by observation and video taped for reliability.

Felt board and Fisher Price used …

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to produce a thorough documentation of Fairfax, a National Register property, and to organize rehabilitation recommendations supportive of the home's social and architectural history. Specifically, the study included three phases of research:

-- accumulating the history of Fairfax' original construction and ownership,

-- determining and establishing the style of the home through design and construction analysis,

-- proposing an adaptive use for the home and enumerating economic and design recommendations sensitive to its style and history.

The first two phases of research were achieved primarily through traditional methods of historic research which included the …
