Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 551. Photos, transcripts, design plans, and education materials about the Felts Log House, a log structure originally built in Logan County, Kentucky, in the early nineteenth century and moved to the campus of Western Kentucky University in 1978. Contains a variety of worksheets for children, furnishing plans by WKU, and news clippings about the house. It also contains transcripts of interviews about the house from Felts descendants and Sam Watkins.

McGaughey with Otis Lee Wiggins about the resettlement program undertaken by the Resettlement Administration Project 14 in Christian County, Kentucky. Wiggins was an administrator for the U.S. Resettlement Administration and discusses the Christian County program in great detail.

The house was researched and evaluated for historic significance. The findings of this investigation are reported in this paper, along with a description of the property and a short history.

The idea of adapting old buildings for emerging purposes has been a regular strategy to sustain architectural resources since the medieval period or even earlier. However, the concept of adaptive reuse has only been gaining prevalence since the nineteenth-century when there was an increase in awareness of historic preservation. At this point, instead of sustaining architectural resources in both financial and functional terms, adaptive reuse was re-introduced and reapplied as one of the philosophical treatments of historic preservation.

The first phase of the City of Fortuna’s Rohner Creek flood control project will involve channel modification, widening, and bank stabilization to reduce flooding of bordering properties. Two buildings at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Headquarters (118 Fortuna Blvd.) are slated for demolition and will not be replaced. To comply with the California Environmental Quality Act, Section 15064.5, (CEQA), the CAL FIRE buildings were researched and assessed for historic significance.

Linden Place is a Federal-style residence located in Bristol, Rhode Island on 1.8 acres of land, including three outbuildings. The mansion was constructed in 1810 by Russell Warren and is significant under Criteria B and C in the areas of two of its residents and its architecture. Original owner, George DeWolf and his family had strong ties to the triangle trade and was one of the largest importer of slaves in the country during the nineteenth century. Samuel Colt, grandson of DeWolf, was a respected business man who played an important role in the rubber industry in Bristol and eventually …

The battlefield of the Nankou Campaign was the earliest battlefield of China’s Second World War, which covered an extensive area of about 700 km2 on the north west of Beiping at the border between Hebei and Chahar Provinces. The Nankou Campaign is recalled recently after being obscured for decades. Unfortunately, without a preservation system like the National Park Service, the sites in the battlefield, such as the Great Wall, have been left in ruins for over 70 years. This capstone is a feasibility study for the adaptive reuse of the Colt estate stable in Bristol, RI by analyzing two possible adaptive reuse scenarios. The two scenarios the report focuses on is a special event venue and a horse stable and training facility. The goal of the report is to examine which scenario would be a feasible option for the existing structure while maintaining its historical integrity. Feasibility was determined by analyzing and assessing factors such as assumptions and limitations that are associated with the structure and the adaptive reuse process. “Palimpsest preservation” suggest the necessity of keeping the successive layers of urban form alive rather than simply effacing and rebuilding, for that keeps a city’s history alive. No city without a tangible, tactile history, without the capacity for denizens and visitors to reach into the past while experiencing the present, can be truly vital. But this is a contested approach. There are a wide range of applications for three-dimensional (3D) data in archaeology, and a diverse array of methods for collecting and analyzing those data. In this article, free 3D photogrammetry software (Autodesk 123D Catch) is used to document a series of grave markers. The data are subsequently exported to Geomagic Design X to demonstrate and briefly discuss the various potential analyses that might be used to illustrate the effects of preservation treatments and marker degradation through time. What are the best practices of electronic records archives the archival field, how can problems be resolved or how to avoid them; and where do we go from here with electronic records archives? First I review practices, policies, and management of electronic records developments. Next I discuss problematic issues archives and research facilities face relating to electronic records. Precipice Regulations And Perverse Incentives: Comparing Historic Preservation Designation And Endangered Species Listing, J. Peter Byrne

The insight upon which this article is built is that the common structures of these two legal regimes create incentives toward destroying the resources they seek to protect. The shift from legal freedom to exploit resources to strict limitation on property modification and the lengthy and public process to designate or list specific resources for protection provide the motive and the opportunity to legally frustrate the application of the statutes. This article seeks to understand how these perverse incentives are created and how they can be lessened. The procedural and substantive provisions of both legal regimes have evolved to reduce …
