This document provides guidance for the care and maintenance of the buildings on the AMK Ranch. The Preservation Treatment Guide includes background on the history and significance of the site, individual building assessments and recommendations for repair and maintenance, and general guidance on issues such as exterior log maintenance, grading and drainage pest control and winterization.

This document was prepared for the National Park Service by University of Wyoming Research Scientist Mary Humstone and graduate assistant Carly-Ann Anderson, as part of a 2011 summer field course in historic preservation.

The Laramie West Side Historic Building Inventory

In July, 2010, the University of Wyoming American Studies Program (UW-AMST) entered into an agreement with the Albany County Historic Preservation Board to complete an inventory of historic buildings in a 32-block residential area of Laramie. The project was undertaken by UW-AMST as part of the public-sector component of the American Studies curriculum.

Laramie’s West Side neighborhood comprises all of the residential blocks west of the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and east of the Laramie River. Miller Ranch

The Miller Ranch interpretive plan recommends interpreting the Miller house as it was when the Millers lived there, and using the other ranch buildings, include a historic Forest Service office and a large livestock and hay barn, for interpretation and related activities such as workshops.

The site survey, historical research, and interpretive plan were completed by University of Wyoming American Studies students as part of a summer field course and summer internship under the supervision of Mary Humstone. This interpretive plan was developed for the National Elk Refuge and in cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

The nomination was sponsored by the Sheridan Heritage Center.

The individual properties within the National Register nomination are organized by street and property address beginning with the north-south streets (Broadway, Gould Street and Main Street) and continuing with the east-west streets in numerical order from First to Fifth.
