In 2015 the City of Eureka was planning a trail that would end/begin near the house located at 2186 Tydd Street, which was initially not considered to be within the Area of Potential Effect (APE).

The house was researched and evaluated for historic significance. The findings of this investigation are reported in this paper, along with a description of the property and a short history.

The first phase of the City of Fortuna’s Rohner Creek flood control project will involve channel modification, widening, and bank stabilization to reduce flooding of bordering properties. Two buildings at the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Headquarters (118 Fortuna Blvd.) are slated for demolition and will not be replaced. To comply with the California Environmental Quality Act, Section 15064.5, (CEQA), the CAL FIRE buildings were researched and assessed for historic significance.

Built in 1883, the house at 453 F Street was originally located at the northwest corner of the block (number 86) which is the southeast corner of 5th and G Streets (Daily Times Telephone, 13 Jan. 1883). It appears to have been moved to its present location in 1941 when the Standard Oil Company con- structed a gasoline station at 5th and G Streets for E.W. Chamber- lain and his son, Byard (Arcata Union, 21 Nov. 1941). This report details the architectural evolution and ownership history of the house.

The house at 1086 I Street was built for Isaac Minor by local contractor Theodore Dean in 1884 (Humboldt Standard, 2 Oct. 1884). During that same year, Dean oversaw the construction of two other houses and a store on the Minor Block. The milliner's shop at 1057 H Street was the first to be built (Humboldt Standard, 11 Feb. 1884), followed by Minor's own residence at the southwest corner of 11th and H Streets (Humboldt Standard, 18 July, 31 July, 2 Oct. 1884). The Minor Theatre and the adjacent Minor Building have been submitted for consideration for designation under the City of Arcata's Landmark and Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (LHP). Both buildings are historically important to Arcata by virtue of their association with pioneer lumberman and entrepreneur Isaac Minor and because of their contribution to the commercial, social and cultural life of the community. Although the buildings have experienced exterior alterations since their construction three- quarters of a century ago, both retain sufficient architectural integrity to easily qualify for LHP designation.

One of Eureka' s finest examples of Queen Anne architecture, the Simpson-Vance House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Also historically-significant, the house was associated with an important Eureka builder, James Simpson, and with the prominent John M. Vance family. Despite exterior alterations and adaptive use, the house remains architecturally intact with good potential for full restoration of its original, opulent splendor.

Window and door changes along with major interior reconstruction have altered the house considerably from its original appearance. It is the addition on the southwest corner, however, that is so intrusive as to permanently compromise the house's historic architecture. The house at 895 7th Street is a two-story, hipped-roof box with 1/1 windows and a central entrance. This house type was built locally in the first decade of the 20th century and is notable for its exterior simplicity and lack of decoration. Removal of the one-story porch across the front, replacement of the original front door, and enclosure of the rear porch are major alterations.

It was during Bertha Averell's ownership that the house was remodeled with Craftsman features. The tax assessment for 1924 shows an increase in assessed value for improvements which could indicate the new construction.

The Ely-Ioelu family ownership spanned more than forty years. Paul and Anna Ely were well-known Arcata residents who owned the Varsity Sweet Shop/Restaurant on the east side of the Plaza from 1945 until 1968. They lived in the house until their daughter and her husband purchased it in 1965.

The Hunt Dental Building at 839 Ninth Street in Arcata is a one-story stucco structure with a quasi pavilion in the center of the front facade. A recessed entry contains a glass-paned door with sidelights and a transom light overhead. Front windows on either side of the entry consist of a narrow window with a small upper-division and a larger window which repeats the divisions. Small windows are found in the west and south walls, but the east wall is without openings and is now covered with a vertical-board siding, added after the 1979 fire which destroyed the three-store building …

These include the addition in the northeast corner, the front door, the louvered window in the upstairs of the south wall, and the window shutters. Other alterations have occurred, but they are not particularly intrusive and could remain without impinging upon the building's architecture.

The barn, quite handsome and very important to the character of the area, also deserves Historic designation.
