Outdoor Artificial Lighting Effects On Livability Of Pedestrian Paths In Urban Heritage Context, Chirine Traboulsi, Aya Hassoun, Mostafa Rabea, Mary Felix

BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development

Lighting is an important ecological factor that influences individuals’ outdoor activities as well as the development of livable communities in cities. Artificial outdoor lighting is vital in improving the quality of urban open places throughout the nighttime and has a significant impact on the pedestrians' night-time perception and mental safety. This study aims to uncover whether outdoor lighting has indeed an effect on the livability of the pedestrian paths of a community and if so, what is the optimal design that fits an urban heritage setting. The research employs a mixed methods approach, where both qualitative and quantitative methods are …

Biomimicry As An Urban Challenge In Shaping The Future Of Cultural Communities, Nora M. Rehan Mar 2023

Biomimicry As An Urban Challenge In Shaping The Future Of Cultural Communities, Nora M. Rehan

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

The cultural identity of urban communities is the main expression of historical privacy and shapes societies’ past, present, and future. It is an entity of cultural and knowledge accumulation stemming from the community's traditions and customs, which help to consolidate the social fabric and play an important role in the lives of individuals and the planning and development processes. Urban areas with cultural and heritage values are the most important competitive advantages of urban cities that are considered as a primary nucleus for achieving sustainability on a broader scale for the neighboring regions. One of the most important of those …

The Impact Of Plastering On The Hygrothermal Behaviour Of Historical Sandstone Located In The Coastal Region Of Lebanon, Hoda Zeayter, Ibtihal Y. El-Bastawissi, Hiba Mohsen Mar 2022

The Impact Of Plastering On The Hygrothermal Behaviour Of Historical Sandstone Located In The Coastal Region Of Lebanon, Hoda Zeayter, Ibtihal Y. El-Bastawissi, Hiba Mohsen

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

In an unusual trend in the conservation practice of built heritage in Lebanon, the external plaster layer, which protects the sandstone from weathering factors, is being removed for aesthetic reasons. These buildings are in a coastal region, hot humid climate in the summer and moderate cold weather in the winter. This paper discusses the importance of external and internal plastering of the historical sandstone bearing wall, by the mean of a computational tool that underlines the role of the plastering in the hygrothermal behaviour of the historical stone, in the aim to validate the practice of the ancestors in covering …

Reflections Of Arabic Literature On Architectural Representation, Othman El Obeidi, Aya Salamah, Rola Ayoub, Abed El Karim Owaydat

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Literature and architecture have long been connected where both are forms of art; literature is a verbal form of art whereas architecture takes a social form. Both domains play a major role in heritage inheritance and representation and are immensely linked to each other; each is capable of representing and embodying the other. Gloomily, in light of digital technology, Information Age, and onslaught of globalization, the reflections of the practices of Arabic literature on architectural representations, after being practiced together since ancient periods, have retracted in recent times thus architecture in the Arab cities has started to veer far away …

Applied Studies On Enhancing Public Open Spaces Of The Coastal Cities: The Case Of Tripoli City_ Urban Community Of Al-Fayhaa, Nehmat K. Karim

BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development

Over the past three decades there has been a tremendous transformation in cultural heritage, both in terms of practices and in the understanding of cultural heritage. These changes are very much connected to wider changes in the very nature of culture and reflect major social and political transformation. They are also very much evident in the re-shaping of public space in more inclusive ways for diverse histories and experiences (Gerard Delanty). Furthermore, having cultural features in the public spaces of the cities contributes in bringing communities together and strengthening the local economy as well. Thence, enhancing heritage and innovations in …

Methods Of Adaptive Reuse In Alexandria’S Buildings With Heritage Values, Mina Nader Morkos

BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development

Due to the rapid progress in the digital technology, using 3D modelling and augmented reality in architecture, now we can transform, create qualitative and sustainable changes in the interior architecture of our architectural heritage, to achieve sustainable cities, this study of the interior architectural solutions developed between architectural heritage, digital registration processes, and parametric construction and fabrication systems. Also using of Information Systems in recording and documenting buildings and archaeological areas.

It helps in designing through computer systems “Virtual Reality” to determine methods of conservation and dealing with archaeological areas and buildings. Using information networks to exchange information globally and …
