Blended learning was introduced into the Construction Management programme in the School of Surveying and Construction Management at the Technological University Dublin in 2016. The module has traditionally been delivered by face-to-face teaching but online delivery has been facilitated using the Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard) which has enabled a more blended approach to academic instruction. This innovative change to module provision has also provided an opportunity to enhance the student learning experience within the School through a more flexible teaching and learning environment. In this paper, the design, development and implementation of blended learning into a Construction Technology module is …
Mapping Urban Performance Culture: A Common Ground For Architecture And Theater, Ting Chin, Christopher B. Swift
Mapping Urban Performance Culture: A Common Ground For Architecture And Theater, Ting Chin, Christopher B. Swift
Publications and Research
Our co-taught course focuses on theater history, with an emphasis on performance architecture. Assignments are designed to illuminate the ways in which architectural design and technology inform performance practices and audience reception. The pivotal assignment for exploring interdisciplinarity is a three-week module on mapping historical theaters in New York City. Open-source Global Information Systems (GIS) software serves as a common mechanism for students to situate theatrical productions in the context of the built urban environment, deepening their understanding of the social, economic, and artistic forces that contributed to performance culture. Mapping is a shared pedagogy for analyzing and presenting research …

Listening To High School Students: Purposefully Designed Spaces And The Impact On Students’ Engagement In Learning, Yanira Oliveras-Ortiz, Dalane E. Bouillion, Lizzy Asbury
Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Scholars have generally accepted the notion that context and students’ response to the environment influence their engagement in learning. Hence, a qualitative study was conducted to explore the impact purposefully designed learning spaces have on student engagement in a career-inspired high school. Focus groups were conducted before and after the move to a new high school. Through the group interviews, students engaged in discourse about the impact purposefully designed learning spaces have on their engagement in learning. The findings indicate that the students recognized the instructional importance and the impact of their new spaces. The student voices provide educators and …
The Reasons For Not Implementing Green Pyramid Rating System In Egyptian Buildings, Rania Rushdy Moussa
The Reasons For Not Implementing Green Pyramid Rating System In Egyptian Buildings, Rania Rushdy Moussa
Architectural Engineering
Green Pyramid Rating System ‘‘GPRS” was established in 2009, Yet sustainable architecture practices in Egypt does not shows constant steps of growth. This research discusses the reasons behind the negligence of implementing GPRS into projects as a sustainable design approach. The research intends to identify the gaps between the architectural curriculum’s and GPRS aspects. Research methods are divided into two parts the first part is a survey questionnaire targeting senior architecture students at Egyptian private universities and public universities, as well as experienced architects in order to determine their level of awareness toward the aspects of the GPRS. While the …

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
The U.S. workforce is increasingly comprised of older adults, women, and minorities who lack basic skills and are unable to acquire these skills through traditional educational and training programs. New approaches are needed to provide effective training to the adult learner and flexible support for nontraditional students who must balance work-life demands with limited educational opportunities. Contextualized teaching and learning (CTL) is a form of experiential learning that blends both basic skills and occupational training together in environments that allow students to relate subject matter to real-world situations. Virtual CTL environments can be created to better engage students, provide immediate …

Working Papers in Critical, Creative and Reflective Practice
Lectures from a 12-session course that addresses the intersection of design with critical thinking. Design in this course means intentionality in construction, which involves a range of materials, a sequence of steps, and principles that inform the choice of materials and the steps. Design also always involves putting people, as well as materials, into place. This happens by working with the known properties of people, as well as the known properties of material, and trying out new arrangements to work around their constraints (at least temporarily). Critical thinking, as I define it, involves understanding ideas and practices better when we …

FA Finding Aids
Finding aid only for Folklife Archives Project 1245. A collection of materials relating to research on the Felts Log House undertaken by Betsy Tyrie and Colin Stephen. The documentation seeks to interpret the social aspects of the log house as well as architectural changes made to the structure over the course of nearly 150 years. The report also provides insight into the house’s history, its construction, and its eventual relocation to WKU’s campus in the late 1970s. Recorded audio interviews, black and white and color photographs, newspaper articles, and a brief personal essay are also included in the collection.
