Engineered Nanoparticles (ENPs) Have Been Increasingly Used in Agricultural Operations, leading to an Urgent Need for Robust Methods to Analyze Co-Occurring ENPs in Plant Tissues. in Response, This Study Advanced the Simultaneous Extraction of Coexisting Silver, Cerium Oxide, and Copper Oxide ENPs in Lettuce Shoots and Roots using Macerozyme R-10 and Analyzed Them by Single-Particle Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Additionally, the Standard Stock Suspensions of the ENPs Were Stabilized with Citrate, and the Long-Term Stability (Up to 5 Months) Was Examined for the First Time. the Method Performance Results Displayed Satisfactory Accuracies and Precisions and Achieved Low Particle Concentration …

The usage of electronic cigarettes (ECs) has surged since their invention two decades ago. However, to date, the health effects of EC aerosol exposure are still not well understood because of insufficient data on the chemical composition of EC aerosols and the corresponding evidence of health risks upon exposure. Herein, we quantified the metals in primary and secondhand aerosols generated by three brands of ECs. By combining aerosol filter sampling and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), we assessed the mass of metals as a function of EC flavoring, nicotine concentration, device power, puff duration, and aging of the devices. …

Conventional drinking water treatment processes were evaluated under typical water treatment plant conditions to determine their effectiveness in the removal of seven common antibiotics: carbadox, sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfadimethoxine, sulfamerazine, sulfamethazine, sulfathiazole, and trimethoprim. Experiments were conducted using synthetic solutions prepared by spiking both distilled/ deionized water and Missouri River water with the studied compounds. Sorption on Calgon WPH powdered activated carbon, reverse osmosis, and oxidation with chlorine and ozone under typical plant conditions were all shown to be effective in removing the studied antibiotics. This paper presents the results of a laboratory study on the effect of pH (2, 5, and 9) and gas-phase ozone concentration (1, 7, and 11 wt. %) on the decolorization efficiency via ozonation for seven common textile dyes. Higher gas-phase ozone concentrations resulted in higher decolorization rates due to more rapid ozone transfer. Higher gas-phase ozone concentration, however, was also observed to have a positive, neutral, or negative effect on ozone dose requirements for different dyes. Studies were conducted which used the ozone/hydrogen peroxide (O3/H2O2) advanced oxidation process to pretreat three classes of compounds prior to aerobic biological treatment. The study compounds included ethylene oxide/propylene oxide (EO/PO) block copolymers, polypropylene glycols (PPGs), linear secondary alcoholethoxylates (LSAES), and alkylphenolethoxylates (APEs). After preoxidation with ozone and hydrogen peroxide (added at their stoichiometric ratio), 300 mg/L as COD samples were bioassayed in aerobic batch bioassays with a mixed liquor suspended solids concentration of 1500 mg/L. The H2O2/UV Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) Was Investigated to Determine Byproduct Formation under Different Experimental Conditions (PH, Alkalinity, and H2O2/UV Dose). a Key Factor in the Efficiency of the AOP Was the Dissolved Oxygen Concentration. Gas Chromatography/mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) Analysis Was Used to Identify Byproducts Resulting from Oxidation under Oxygen-Rich and Oxygen-Limited Conditions. Resultant Oxidation Byproducts Were Analyzed for their Susceptibility to Biological Degradation. The use of ozone in water treatment plants is expanding rapidly in the United States. Ozone offers excellent disinfection properties (including chlorine-resistant pathogens) and does not form trihalomethanes. Additionally, ozone can be used to achieve or control many other water quality parameters such as color, taste and odor, and inorganic and organic contaminant concentrations. Control of ozone's disinfection byproducts such as bromate (formed in high bromide waters) is required. This presentation will review the synergistic effects of ozone applicable to use in small water treatment plants.
