The concept of type and typology are at the heart of Architecture. Type is the simple act of drawing similarity and difference between a group of artifacts. Typology, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated. When one engages with typology, they are taking the information they gather from observing the artifacts and transposing it into a new context. Most designers and architects refer to this act as type/typology. The distinction between the two terms is necessary for my work. My work looks at the relationship between these two events. China’s rapid development has altered the city’s landscape on a massive scale, continually eroding the delicate urban tissue of old Beijing. Such dramatic changes have forced an aging architecture to rely on chaotic, spontaneous renovations to survive the ever-changing neighborhood. In addition, poor standards of hygiene have turned unique living space and potential thriving communities into a serious urban problem. Hutongs are gradually becoming the local inhabitants’ dumpster and the haven for the wealthy. First off, peripheries are places that exist as spatial conditions in cities, They indicate edges and places that have been left behind. Spaces that have lost their meaning.
