Folklife Archives Finding Aids

Finding aid only for Folklife Archives Project 1245. A collection of materials relating to research on the Felts Log House undertaken by Betsy Tyrie and Colin Stephen. The documentation seeks to interpret the social aspects of the log house as well as architectural changes made to the structure over the course of nearly 150 years. The report also provides insight into the house’s history, its construction, and its eventual relocation to WKU’s campus in the late 1970s. Recorded audio interviews, black and white and color photographs, newspaper articles, and a brief personal essay are also included in the collection.

Finding aid and full-text scan of paper (Click on “Additional Files” below) for Folklife Archives Project 160. This collection contains a paper entitled “The Strange Little Stone House: The History Of The Underwood Home – 1529 State Street,” written by Robert Harbison as a part of a folk studies class at Western Kentucky University in the fall of 1992. Also included is a Kentucky Historic Resources Inventory sheet detailing the Underwood Home.

As the medium cost of conventional housing rises, many people unable to incur such an expense look for alternative forms of adequate housing. In rural areas surrounding Bowling Green, Kentucky, several families have utilized the mobile home as a base to expand, embellish, and personalize, creating a larger more conventional-looking home. Many of these altered homes possess gabled roofs, rock exterior walls, and expansive interior space. Of primary concern is: why have these families undertaken a project of this nature?
