From Hide To Handbag: A Holistic Review Of The Leather Industry And Its Environmental Impact, Ava M. Cafasso
GLO 100 Introduction to Global Studies: Policy Analysis Papers
Leather is a universally versatile material used in various products in the global market. Today, leather, specifically from the commercial cow, is still desired by manufacturers for its durability, accessibility, and quality. However, there are adverse environmental and ethical consequences of leather products using chrome tanning, in particular, that consumers do not recognize. This paper analyzes, evaluates, and contextualizes the current methods of leather production and the environmental issues associated with the trade. Furthermore, it discusses some sustainable efforts made regarding material choice and alternative production methods. With a holistic review of leather production and its implications, this paper examines …

This is the latest in a series of reports from the Listening to Teachers Study, which seeks understanding of how New York City's early childhood educators are faring during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study is to use data gathered through surveys (May 2020, n=3355; June 2021, n=663) and in-depth interviews (spring 2022) to prompt reflection and discussion about what a more equitable post-pandemic ECE system could look like.
This report focuses on describing the June 2021 sample and preliminary findings:
- As in 2020, emotional/mental health support was the most frequently requested need, but professional …

Advancing U.S. Latino Entrepreneurship: A New National Economic Imperative, Marlene Orozco, Alfonso Morales, Michael J. Pisani, Jerry I. Porras
Purdue University Press Books
Advancing U.S. Latino Entrepreneurship examines business formation and success among Latinos by identifying arrangements that enhance entrepreneurship and by understanding the sociopolitical contexts that shape entrepreneurial trajectories. While it is well known that Latinos make up one of the largest and fastest growing populations in the U.S., Latino-owned businesses are now outpacing this population growth and the startup business growth of all other demographic groups in the country.
The institutional arrangements shaping business formation are no level playing field. Minority entrepreneurs face racism and sexism, but structural barriers are not the only obstacles that matter; there are agentic barriers and …

Housing Dynamics In Northeast Ohio: Setting The Stage For Resurgence, Thomas E. Bier
Housing Dynamics In Northeast Ohio: Setting The Stage For Resurgence, Thomas E. Bier
MSL Academic Endeavors eBooks
The book presents an overview of regional housing dynamics and consequent impacts in Northeast Ohio since the 1940s. Focus is on the city of Cleveland and its host county. Dynamics are examined in terms of supply and demand, population movement, lifespan of buildings, and the influence of government on the choices people have when considering where to live. Impacts include housing decline and abandonment, change in property value, and urban sprawl. Recommendations, centered on tax-base growth sharing, are presented for altering existing dynamics to support Northeast Ohio’s resurgence.

A National Scan Of Psychiatric Involuntary Hold Policies, Evan D. Peters
Undergraduate Research Posters
Psychiatric involuntary holds are initiated when an individual suffering from mental illness is deemed a danger to themselves or others. Each state and the District of Columbia has its own legislation outlining the process for involuntary holds and the assessments that take place during a hold. A variety of individuals, professional and non-professional, can be involved in the process. Each state also sets a time limit during which a person can be held, and specific language that details the behavior of individuals that are eligible for psychiatric involuntary holds. This information was gathered by examining each states' codes involving psychiatric …

Apple Of Discord: The "Hungarian Factor" In Austro-Serbian Relations, 1867-1881, Ian D. Armour
Central European Studies
When seeking the origins of World War I, the chain of events in the late nineteenth century that led to the breakdown of relations between Austria-Hungary and Serbia and facilitated the rise of an aggressive Serbian nationalism needs to be understood. This book focuses on the hitherto unexplored Hungarian influence on the Habsburg Monarchy's policy toward Serbia after the 1867 Ausgleich, and it argues that this early period was critical in shaping policy after 1871, down to the imposition on Serbia in 1881 of a system of economic and political control. The Ausgleich, the Austro-Hungarian compromise that reconstituted the Empire as …

Use Of An Integrated System Dynamics Model For Analyzing Behaviour Of The Social-Economic-Climatic System In Policy Development, Christopher J. Popovich, Slobodan P. Simonovic, Gordon A. Mcbean
Water Resources Research Report
Climate change remains one of the most critical issues that humans and the natural world face today. Yet while a strong body of scientific research has identified the risks if mitigation and adaptation measures are not taken, there still remains a policy lag. This leads researchers to pose several questions: is there an identified need by the policy domain for more or different science? Is the science that is conducted made policyrelevant? If not, are there tools to better link science to policy? This report will explain the process of science-policy communication related to the development of an integrated system …
