On The Origins Of Life — Modelling The Initial Stages Of Complex Coacervate Droplet Formation, Yixuan Wu
On The Origins Of Life — Modelling The Initial Stages Of Complex Coacervate Droplet Formation, Yixuan Wu
Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Awards (WLURAs)
Coacervate droplets are considered a plausible model for protocells due to their spontaneous formation and ability to compartmentalize macromolecules such as nucleic acid and peptides. Although experimental studies have observed and synthesized coacervates under different laboratory conditions, little is known about their structure. Here we present atomistic molecular dynamic simulations of the interactions between water and oppositely charged proteins that cluster together in a salt-dependent process. Observing such liquid-liquid phase separation on an atomic level would serve as a model for the initial stages of complex coacervate formation. Molecular Dynamics was used to compute diagnostics of the structure at different …
Social Supports For Adolescent And Young Adult Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Patients: A Scoping Review, Caitlin E. Mungall
Social Supports For Adolescent And Young Adult Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Patients: A Scoping Review, Caitlin E. Mungall
Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Awards (WLURAs)
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a chronic disorder with negative health consequences for millions of women. The paucity of research regarding interventions targeting the psychosocial symptoms of PCOS for adolescents and young adults (AYAs), susceptible to low self-esteem and depression, warranted this review. This paper provides an overview of research on the social supports currently available for AYAs and identifies areas where further research is required to elucidate their support needs. A scoping review methodology identified 15 studies that met inclusion criteria. Findings revealed that this is an emerging field of research and most included studies originated in North America. …
False Recognition: Revisiting The Account For Pictorial Encoding, Katarina Jovanovic
False Recognition: Revisiting The Account For Pictorial Encoding, Katarina Jovanovic
Western Libraries Undergraduate Research Awards (WLURAs)
False recognition is an inaccurate claim of having previously encountered a non-presented test item. Exceptionally high levels of false recognition are observed when participants are exposed to lists of semantically related words. Israel and Schacter (1997) showed that presenting pictures of items with their auditory label during the encoding phase significantly reduced false recognition relative to presenting only words with their auditory label. The current study excluded the auditory labels and instead investigated whether presenting pictures of items along with words during encoding would also reduce false recognition relative to presenting the written words only. The results provided no evidence …

Nia Singh is an intercultural education specialist and leads the Intercultural Safety Training Program (ISTP) at the Southwestern Ontario Intercultural Education Centre (SOIEC). She has undertaken significant work with the ISTP developing and implementing training sessions and webinars to help clients make their workplace more culturally competent. Nia has recently observed that the ISTP could greatly benefit from including training materials to help health care practitioners provide improved health care to Indigenous patients. Indigenous people face numerous social, political, historical barriers while accessing healthcare services in Canada. Cultural differences can also lead healthcare practitioners to discriminate against their Indigenous patients …

Case 10: Lost In Translation: Developing Strategies For Indigenous People Who Have Cancer, Limited English Proficiency, And Limited Health Literacy, Hillary Martin, Janet Papadakos, Amanda Terry
Western Public Health Casebooks
Studies have documented that people who have limited health literacy and limited English proficiency often have challenges with all aspects of health care, including difficulties accessing health care, understanding medical information, making treatment decisions, taking prescriptions properly, and communicating with health care workers. People who have limited health literacy often have an overall negative outlook about health care, and they are less likely to seek help from health care providers or health programs, which can negatively affect their overall long-term health and lead to poorer health outcomes than those with high health literacy.
The main goals of this case are …

In 2018, a review of the public health inspection program by the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) identified a gap in how its Environmental Health and Infectious Disease division evaluated mandatory public health services. To meet the requirements of the Ontario Public Health Standards, the MLHU must implement important recommendations from the review to ensure the most effective and efficient service model is delivered. One recommendation under consideration is to initiate activities that will entrench quality assurance and promote continuous quality improvement through monitoring and integration of findings from client experience into MLHU’s mandatory public health services. Rex Paul, the Manager …

Western Public Health Casebooks
While visiting a local school, the mayor of London was asked a simple question by a grade three student: “why aren’t there flashing light barriers at all railway crossings that are close to the places where children play?” The mayor did not have an answer to this question or the many other questions that went along with it, but he knew something needed to be done. But what? And by whom? Rail crossings in London are typically prone to risk. In Canada, only 17% of all 17,000 railway crossings have gates, and the primary purpose of these gates is to …

Robin Scherbatsky, a public health nurse at Lambton Public Health in Sarnia, Ontario, plans to advocate for public funding of the more accurate interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) test for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). She wants the IGRA to be covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan the same way the tuberculin skin test, which also tests for LTBI, is covered. Although IGRA tests are more expensive than tuberculin skin tests, IGRAs are very accurate and effective at reducing unnecessary treatments given to people falsely diagnosed with LTBI, and this results in cost savings for the public payer. Given that the …
