Improving The Educational Experience Of Trauma-Impacted Students: Identifying Emerging Best Practices For Teaching Low-Socioeconomic Status Urban Students, Regina Lane

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative action research concentrates on examining the best practices for teachers in trauma-informed practices by producing an implementation guide to train the trainer. The theoretical framework utilized to help inform the development of this research was Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory (1989) in relation to human development for identifying the emerging best practices with being trauma informed. The scope of this research focuses on low-socioeconomic status (SES) urban youth, so cultural sensitivity is naturally always a component of a complete train-the-trainer, trauma-informed teaching program. I identified the emerging best practices in two ways: (a) by gathering and summarizing supporting sources …

An Investigation Of The Self-Reported Problems Of Mexican, Mexican-American And Anglo-American Adolescents, Marta Urteaga Pippin

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study utilized a cross-cultural comparative approach to investigate: (1) whether differences existed in problems reported by three groups of students of both sexes, Mexican, Mexican-American, and Anglo-American; and (2) the extent to which these differences were influenced by ethnicity, sex, or socioeconomic status, or the interaction among those variables. The STS Youth Inventory--Form G and a Personal Data Sheet were administered in the Spring of 1979 to 710 students from five high schools in Northern California. The sample which was statistically analyzed for the purposes of this investigation was comprised of 530 students. Of these 74 were Mexicans, 179 …

The Politics Of John Muir, Dorothy M. Freeman Jan 1977

The Politics Of John Muir, Dorothy M. Freeman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A man does not always see himself as others see him. John Muir is venerated by several generations of Americans as a man who left a legacy of State and National Parks, State and National Forests, outdoor beauty and untouched wilderness areas which would never have survived has it not been for this dedicated man.

He did not plan such a course. He did what he found necessary to be done, without thought of personal gain or public honor.

However, during his lifetime there were those who did not view him with such veneration. Countless ranchers, lumberman and politicians must …

Transformational Technique In Gabriel Fielding's "In The Time Of Greenbloom", May Grant Robbie Jan 1974

Transformational Technique In Gabriel Fielding's "In The Time Of Greenbloom", May Grant Robbie

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Gabriel Fielding's In the Time of Greenbloom is a major twentieth century novel that has received literary critical attention. With its dramatic plot and colorful characters, it has an immediate surface appeal for most readers. The novel requires deeper, symbolical reading in order to reach its central theme, man's potential for transformation.

John Blaydon, the protagonist, is a very different young man at the end of the novel from the child he is at the beginning. His activities, the narrative base of the novel, reveal more than the external events of his life. Fielding uses them as objectification of confrontations …

American Career Of James Connolly, Kara P. Brewer Jan 1972

American Career Of James Connolly, Kara P. Brewer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

So badly wounded that he had to be propped up in a chair to face the firing squad, James Connolly was executed by the British on May 10, 1916 in Dublin's infamous Kilmainham Jail. He had been one of the leaders of the abortive Easter 'Rising against English control of Ireland. This event in itself was sufficient to guarantee him a significant place in Irish history but Connolly had achieved prominence in other activities as well. Besides being a revolutionary nationalist he had been a Marxist and a labor leader, had founded the Irish Socialist Republican Party and had played …

The German "Vormärz" And The Youth Of Carl David Weber, Ilka Stoffregen Hartmann

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

No biography has yet been written about the man who founded the city of Stockton, the first Californian town with an English name, a city which in 1851 was under consideration to become the state capital.

Little is known about the personal life of Charles M. Weber whom Erin G. Gudde calls "next to Sutter the most notable German pioneer during the transition period of California history".

Problems Of Assimilation And Cultural Pluralism Among Chinese-Americans In San Francisco : An Exploratory Study, James Wilbur Chin

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For many years a difference of opinion has existed regarding inter-ethnic relations dealing specifically with the Chinese-Americans. This is all part of the process of social change which is currently taking place in the United States. Not only the Chinese-Americans, but other minorities as well, are attempting to find their place within the American society. Therefore, a study of the Chinese-Americans is very timely. Hopefully this study will contribute to the larger body of theory dealing with intergroup relations.

This thesis is the story of the development of the Catholic Church in San Joaquin County and the adjacent areas that were served by the pioneer clergymen of Stockton 1 s St. Mary's Church from approximately 1851 to 186). These first dozen years of Central California Catholicism cover the pastorates of Stockton's first four priests: Fathers Dominic Blaive, Cornelius Delahunty, Robert Maurice, and Joseph Gallagher. These dozen years mark the transition of Stockton from a hectic supply center for the Southern Mines to a stable community whose economy became, based upon the agricultural production of its surrounding rural areas. These …

A Historical Study Of The Development Of The Bracero Program,With Special Emphasis On The Coachella And Imperial Valleys, Margaret Breed Mackaye

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Why at the present time do we need added sources of labor beyond that available within the country? One faction would cry, "We don't!" Another would say, "We decry the importation of labor, but there simply aren't United States citizens in sufficient numbers to get these jobs done." A third group would probably answer, "Why worry about it? These laborers will come across the border, legally or illegally; we may as well avail ourselves of their services." Perhaps we should let a fourth group speak: "We must see that you do not misuse these people."

Political And Economic Factors In The Decline Of The British Empire, Pasquale Anania Jan 1956

Political And Economic Factors In The Decline Of The British Empire, Pasquale Anania

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The decline of British influence in world affairs is one of the more pronounced political phenomena of modern times. Over the past century key territories subject to British rule have been slipping loose from their imperial moorings at an ever more rapid rate. Those remaining subject to British authority grow progressively more belligerent.

In his search for an understanding or this eclipse or British sovereignty, the contemporary historian finds himself groping through a network of complexly interrelated social, political, economic, and psychological processes. One or another student or history has argued that specific instances or groups of these processes are …

The Adjustment Of Eighty Correspondence Club Members As Indicated By Two Adjustment Inventories, Maurice R. Seaquist Jan 1951

The Adjustment Of Eighty Correspondence Club Members As Indicated By Two Adjustment Inventories, Maurice R. Seaquist

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of the present thesis to determine the adjustment of a sampling of correspondence club members. The hypothesis is that the social adjustment of these individuals is inferior to that of the individuals used in two personality inventories. In addition, answers to these questions are sought:

  1. Is there a common need or problem that motivates these men and women to seek companionship through correspondence agencies?
  2. What is their age, sex, cultural and geographical background?
  3. What are the physical qualities and economic status of the members and what qualities and status are they seeking in the members they …

A Study Of Frustration Tolerance In Handicapped Children, Barbara Ellen Bower Jan 1947

A Study Of Frustration Tolerance In Handicapped Children, Barbara Ellen Bower

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

What is adjustment? There are almost as many ways of defining it as there are ways of achieving it. To anwer the question one must first try to find the common factor of the varied definitions of adjustment. Sheviakov and Friedberg in their report of the Eight Year Study say, Desirable adjustment was thought of, generally as a process of maturation and adaptation, during which the individual is able to integrate successfully (i.e., without neurotic compromises or delinquent episodes) his primitive impulses and drives with those expectations or demands which are imposed upon him (with reference to his age, sex, …

The Effect Of European Festivals On American Entertainment, Florence Veall Jan 1938

The Effect Of European Festivals On American Entertainment, Florence Veall

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The selection of the subject "The effect of European Festivals on American Entertainment" was prompted by an assignment in a College of the Pacific Summer School course, "Supervision in the Elementary School."

The project was the planning of a patrictic program in an immigrant community. Each nationality represented in the class was to provide a national impression of the homeland of his ancestors, by means of costume, song, and dance typical of the country. After an hour of very interesting entertainment which gave an introduction to the background of the foreign members of the class, all lustily sang "America," led …

The Public Life And Achievements Of James Duval Phelan, Jean Tully Jan 1935

The Public Life And Achievements Of James Duval Phelan, Jean Tully

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

As a figure in the American period of California history, Mr. James D. Phelan's achievements were an outstanding example of what an honest man can do in politics. First of all, I have endeavored to show his contributions to the city of San Francisco. There is hardly any field of San Francisco life in which James D. Phelan did not leave a tremendous influence. The politics of his term as mayor were a shining model of clean and progressive measures.

As senator he kept the interest of California at heart. Through his work at the World's Columbian Exposition, he made …

The Creative Writing Of Poetry In The California Secondary Schools, Wesley Mills Pugh Jan 1930

The Creative Writing Of Poetry In The California Secondary Schools, Wesley Mills Pugh

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Creation was once a prerogative of the gods. For ages the magic word "genius" served as a harrier to isolate from the common man that one in whom burned the spark of constructive originality. In the past we have never considered the possibility of his being one of the teeming throng who Invade our classrooms daily; or having given way to such an absurdity, we have hastily dismissed the Idea, feeling that, if he were, his presence would surely be announced by the choir invisible or some other divine agency.

Of recent years we have experienced a change of opinion. …
