What It Was & What I Know: Attempts At Family History, Katherine Reardon May 2021

What It Was & What I Know: Attempts At Family History, Katherine Reardon

Honors College

Family stories and family histories are contingent on how they are remembered. As these stories are passed down, the ways that they are remembered can change, with the truthful aspects of these stories disappearing over time. As a result, many family stories are not necessarily truthful, but this does not discount their value. The aim of this project is to explore these ideas while also answering the following question: to what extent are family stories bound by the ‘truth’? In order to answer this question, I have explored my own family stories that I know may not be true and …

Being & Not Being Franco-American: The Perspective Of One 21st Century Millennial, Maegan Maheau

Franco-American Centre Franco-Américain Undergraduate Scholarship

I am attempting to share a collective analysis of self-explored thoughts as to where and why I have certain viewpoints or biases on whether “this” or “that” might account for my understanding of what a Franco-American is. The question of being and not being a Franco American is a collection of observations and inductions, both through my socially crafted subjective lens and by relating such matters beyond personal experience.

Class Conflict And The Confederate Conscription Acts In North Carolina, 1862-1864, Tyler Cline May 2014

Class Conflict And The Confederate Conscription Acts In North Carolina, 1862-1864, Tyler Cline

Honors College

This thesis will analyze the effect that Confederate conscription policies during the American Civil War from 1862 to 1864 had on the social order that existed in North Carolina. Conflicts arose during the war between the slave-owning aristocratic class and the yeomen farmers who owned few slaves, if any, and thus were not dependent on the slave system in the pre-war era. A regional approach, exploring the impact of geography on social development, illustrates that the undermining of this social stability led to growing class-consciousness among the middle class farmers who dominated the Piedmont region of North Carolina. It will …

The Grand Derangement In The Context Of The Eighteenth - Century British Empire, Derek A. Jones May 2011

The Grand Derangement In The Context Of The Eighteenth - Century British Empire, Derek A. Jones

Honors College

Since the 1960's there has been a fierce debate on the criminality of the deportation of the Acadian people from the Maritimes. Since then, many historians have compared the deportation of the Acadians, also known as the Grand Dérangement, to modern acts of 'ethnic cleansing'. However, these comparisons take the Grand Dérangement out of context. This thesis compares the Grand Dérangement to the transportation of Scottish and Irish rebels after the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 and United Irish Rebellion of 1798 in an effort to establish that the Grand Dérangement was extraordinary in the context of the 18th-century British …

Mellie Dunham: A Remembrance Norway Maine Summer Festival, July 2003, David Sanderson Jul 2003

Mellie Dunham: A Remembrance Norway Maine Summer Festival, July 2003, David Sanderson

Maine History Documents

The story of Mellie Dunham continues to fascinate, even some seventy-five years after the events. The tale of the 72-year-old country fiddler invited to play for Henry Ford, made famous by the media, then hugely successful as a vaudeville performer, seems almost too perfect to be true. But it all happened, and it was Mellie’s own grace and lack of pretense, a genuineness that inspired the public’s affection for him, that was as much as anything else responsible for the events of 1925 and 1926.

This booklet was created to mark Mellie’s 150th birthday, July 29, 2003. We call it …

History Of Veazie, Maine, Jean Hamilton

Maine Town Documents

Veazie, the smallest town in Penobscot County (consisting of four square miles or 2,560 acres), is about a mile north of Bangor. Until its incorporation in 1853, Veazie was a part of Bangor, known both as Ward 7 and as North Bangor. Its early history must therefore include some of the story of Bangor and early settlements and/or fortifications along the Penobscot River.

Maine Women's Basketball Media Guide, 1985-86, Department Of Public Information And Central Services

General University of Maine Publications

Women’s basketball, as an intercollegiate activity, had its beginning in the 1971-72 season, along with a number of other women’s sports. Unfortunately, there is no statistical compilation of the early days of women’s basketball until the 1975-76 season. In that season Eilene Fox was named head coach and she continued in that post until the 1983-84 season when Peter Gavett assumed the reins.

Social Impact Summary : Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project / Prepared For The Department Of The Army, Corps Of Engineers, New England Division, Edward C. Jordan Company, Inc.

Dickey-Lincoln School Lakes Project

The Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Dam is a water resources project proposed by the Federal Government (U. S. Army Corps of Engineers). Therefore, in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, the Corps of Engineers is required to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) on the project. A federal plan or project such as Dickey-Lincoln should take into account its effect upon man's health, safety, welfare and economic well-being, as well as effects upon the surrounding environment. More importantly, project plans should be evaluated in a "manner calculated to encourage harmony between man and his environment." In other words, project plans or …

New English Canaan, Thomas Morton Jan 1971

New English Canaan, Thomas Morton

Maine History Documents

In 1883 the Prince Society published in very limited quantity The New English Canaan edited by Charles Francis Adams. Since then there has been no new edition of this informative and entertaining work. Adams held faithfully to the original in spelling, punctuation, and even in the use of the early in the text. His footnotes are learned, copious, and occasionally a bit irrelevant, but a number of mystifying expressions are not explained. It may simply be the short supply and relatively poor readability that have caused modern scholars to deny Morton’s work the attention that it deserves. In this edition …

Libraries and archives collect materials from different cultures and time periods to preserve and make available the historical record. As a result, materials such as those presented here may reflect sexist, misogynistic, abusive, racist, or discriminatory attitudes or actions that some may find disturbing, harmful, or difficult to view.

Both a humor and literary magazine, The Pine Needle was a University of Maine student-produced periodical that began publication in the fall of 1946, the first post-World War II semester that saw GIs returning to campus.

The Needle reflected an edginess and rebellion not found in previous UMaine student publications. While …
