Understanding Community Abundance And Anthropogenic Impact On Acadia National Park's Rocky Intertidal Ecosystem Through Photoplot Analysis, Kayla Mclagan Apr 2023

Understanding Community Abundance And Anthropogenic Impact On Acadia National Park's Rocky Intertidal Ecosystem Through Photoplot Analysis, Kayla Mclagan

Honors College

Acadia National Park’s rocky intertidal ecosystem is one that supports a variety of different species and is highly susceptible to changes from human activity. This study aims to assess the pros and cons of using photo plots and community abundance analysis, compared to point-intersect transects, in rapid assessment protocols monitoring Acadia’s rocky intertidal ecosystem. I piloted the photoplot method, a photograph taken of the area contained within a foot-byfoot quadrat, to assess community abundance of the rocky intertidal ecosystem. Histograms and a nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination were used to analyze the community structure of various testing sites. This method of …

What It Was & What I Know: Attempts At Family History, Katherine Reardon May 2021

What It Was & What I Know: Attempts At Family History, Katherine Reardon

Honors College

Family stories and family histories are contingent on how they are remembered. As these stories are passed down, the ways that they are remembered can change, with the truthful aspects of these stories disappearing over time. As a result, many family stories are not necessarily truthful, but this does not discount their value. The aim of this project is to explore these ideas while also answering the following question: to what extent are family stories bound by the ‘truth’? In order to answer this question, I have explored my own family stories that I know may not be true and …

Landings content emphasizes science, history, resource sustainability, economic development, and human interest stories related to

Maine’s lobster industry. The newsletter emphasizes lobstering as a traditional, majority-European American lifeway with an economic and social heritage unique to the coast of Maine. The publication focuses how ongoing research to engage in sustainable, non-harmful, and non-wasteful commercial fishing practices benefit both the fishery and Maine's coastal legacy.

Maine Lobstermen’s Community Alliance (MLCA) started publication of Landings, a 24-page newsletter in January 2013 as the successor of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association (MLA) Newsletter. As of 2022, the MLCA published over 6,500 copies of …

Research, Development And Education Priorities For The Aquaculture Sector In Maine, Maine Aquaculture Innovation Center, University Of Maine, Anne Langston Noll, Christopher Davis, Sebastian Belle, Meggan Dwyer, Dana Morse

General University of Maine Publications

The research priorities survey has been an ongoing initiative coordinated by the Maine Aquaculture Innovation Center in collaboration with Maine Aquaculture Association, Maine Sea Grant, and the University of Maine’s Aquaculture Research Institute since 2012. This report is based on the research priorities survey conducted in June 2019 of Maine’s aquaculture community, and is compared with surveys from 2012 and 2016 to look at trends.

There have been some changes in the prioritization of needs since 2016, but many of the same research, development, and education (R&D&E) needs persist and remain unaddressed. As expected, there are different R&D&E priorities for …

The Relationship Between Juvenile Alcohol Abuse, Depression, And Violence, Julianna Ferguson May 2018

The Relationship Between Juvenile Alcohol Abuse, Depression, And Violence, Julianna Ferguson

Sociology School Student Scholarship

Fortunately, the prevalence of serious violent crime among juveniles (ages 17 and under) is very small. Most offenses committed by juveniles are minor offenses, including larceny-theft, liquor law violations, and petty drug offenses (Regoli et al., 2017). These types of minor offenses make up the bulk of all juvenile delinquency. However, the small percentage of serious juvenile crime and violence is what concerns law enforcement, the federal government, and sociologists the most. Research shows that crime is very common and even perceived as being normal for individuals during adolescence (Leal and Mier 2017; Tibbetts and Daigle 2008). Crime typically associated …

Being & Not Being Franco-American: The Perspective Of One 21st Century Millennial, Maegan Maheau Jan 2017

Being & Not Being Franco-American: The Perspective Of One 21st Century Millennial, Maegan Maheau

Franco-American Centre Franco-Américain Undergraduate Scholarship

I am attempting to share a collective analysis of self-explored thoughts as to where and why I have certain viewpoints or biases on whether “this” or “that” might account for my understanding of what a Franco-American is. The question of being and not being a Franco American is a collection of observations and inductions, both through my socially crafted subjective lens and by relating such matters beyond personal experience.

Themes Of Identity And Power In Contemporary Topical Song, Hilary Warner-Evans May 2016

Themes Of Identity And Power In Contemporary Topical Song, Hilary Warner-Evans

Honors College

This thesis explores the role of identity and power in contemporary topical song using three case studies. The first of these deals with two songs written after the arrest of Maine’s North Pond Hermit in April 2013. It makes a case for the songs, in the context of other creative reactions to the hermit’s arrest, as being expressions of anxiety related to Maine identity. The second study is about new versions of the labor song “Which Side Are You On,” with a particular focus on one from Wisconsin one from Maine. It looks at the theme of solidarity through analysis …

Class Conflict And The Confederate Conscription Acts In North Carolina, 1862-1864, Tyler Cline May 2014

Class Conflict And The Confederate Conscription Acts In North Carolina, 1862-1864, Tyler Cline

Honors College

This thesis will analyze the effect that Confederate conscription policies during the American Civil War from 1862 to 1864 had on the social order that existed in North Carolina. Conflicts arose during the war between the slave-owning aristocratic class and the yeomen farmers who owned few slaves, if any, and thus were not dependent on the slave system in the pre-war era. A regional approach, exploring the impact of geography on social development, illustrates that the undermining of this social stability led to growing class-consciousness among the middle class farmers who dominated the Piedmont region of North Carolina. It will …
