Journal of Electrochemistry
Compared with noble metal platinum (Pt)-based catalysts, inexpensive non-noble metal electrocatalysts have attracted extensive attention for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, chitosan as a kind of biomass resource rich in nitrogen and carbon was used to prepare nitrogen-doped carbon (N-C) and N-C in-situ anchored by copper nanoparticles (Cu/N-C). The as-obtained N-C and Cu/N-C nanoparticles were successfully used as non-noble eletrocatalysts tested for ORR. Compared with the N-C, the Cu/N-C showed the high surface area of 607.3 m 2·g-1 with the mean pore size of 2.5 nm and the pore volume of 0.40 cm3·g-1. The most positive Gibbs free …

Nitrogen-Sulfur Co-Doped Porous Carbon Preparation And Its Application In Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Zhao Gui-Xiang, Hafiz Zaki Ahmed Wail, Zhu Fu-Liang
Journal of Electrochemistry
In recent years, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have been considered as a promising candidate for the next generation of energy storage system due to their ultrahigh theoretical capacity (1675 mAh·g-1) and energy density (2600 Wh·kg-1). However, the practical application of Li-S batteries is seriously limited by their insulating nature of sulfur, the shuttle effect of polysulfides (LiPSs), and volume expansion during charging and discharging. To overcome those disadvantages, one of the commonly methods is to infiltrate sulfur into porous conductive carbon framework, such as porous carbon, hollow carbon spheres, graphene, carbon nanotubes and some composites of the above structures to achieve …

A Review Of Transformative Strategies For Climate Mitigation By Grasslands, Nuria Gomez-Casanovas, Elena Blanc-Betes, Caitlin E. Moore, Carl J. Bernacchi, Ilsa Kantola, Evan H. Delucia
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Grasslands can significantly contribute to climate mitigation. However, recent trends indicate that human activities have switched their net cooling effect to a warming effect due to management intensification and land conversion. This indicates an urgent need for strategies directed to mitigate climate warming while enhancing productivity and efficiency in the use of land and natural (nutrients, water) resources. Here, we examine the potential of four innovative strategies to slow climate change including: 1) Adaptive multi-paddock grazing that consists of mimicking how ancestral herds roamed the Earth; 2) Agrivoltaics that consists of simultaneously producing food and energy from solar panels on …

Denitrifying bioreactor (DNBR) has become a popular edge-of-field practice applied to reduce nitrate over the Mississippi river and to prevent a downstream hypoxic zone occurring at the Gulf of Mexico. Despite widespread field and laboratory studies, fewer investigations have been directed toward a systematic means of evaluating the nitrate removal performance achieved by various filling materials, abiotic factors, and other critical parameters. Our ultimate goal is to improve the nitrate removal by choosing the optimum fill materials and operate under optimal conditions, meanwhile, modeling the DNBR by critical variables. This study begins by establishing a global database. Forty filling materials …
Fire Effects On Soil Properties: Amending Post-Fire Soils With Native Microbial Communities And Biochar To Improve Sagebrush Performance, Sabrina Marie Schuler
Fire Effects On Soil Properties: Amending Post-Fire Soils With Native Microbial Communities And Biochar To Improve Sagebrush Performance, Sabrina Marie Schuler
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Within the sagebrush steppe, fire has been shown to affect biogeochemical properties and the microbial community composition in soils. However, there is uncertainty about the magnitude and direction of these effects, since they vary by sites that differ in abiotic and biotic conditions. Moreover, differences in post-fire management strategies are likely to mediate the effect of fire on soil properties, thus further compounding this uncertainty. Any changes in soil biogeochemical properties following fire can prevent successful restoration of Artemisia tridentata sp. wyomingensis (sagebrush), leading to variable outcomes of restoration success in the sagebrush steppe. Previous research has shown that addition …

Development And Optimization Of A Denitrification System To Promote Biological Nutrient Removal In A Subtropical Estuary, Abigail Gering
Development And Optimization Of A Denitrification System To Promote Biological Nutrient Removal In A Subtropical Estuary, Abigail Gering
Theses and Dissertations
Eutrophication impacts coastal ecosystems globally and triggers phytoplankton and algal blooms, leading to an increase in oxygen demand in the water column and sediments due to various biogeochemical processes. Naturally, biological nitrification, denitrification and anammox processes help to remove nitrogen predominately by nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria in the sediments. Eutrophic systems have increased nutrient and organic matter loading and are prone to the accumulation of ‘muddy’, fine-grained, organic-rich sediments (locally termed ‘muck’) that may not be able to support high enough populations of these bacteria, and therefore, may not adequately support nitrification/denitrification processes that would otherwise remove nitrogen. To decrease …

Feasibility Discussion Of Potential Carbon Offsetting Options For Nebraska, Andrew Mwape
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Conclusion
Highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of carbon offsetting options in the context of the state of Nebraska, this discussion shows that the choice and decisions about which option is better than the other depends on the interests at play and expected outcomes of the participation in carbon markets. However, irrespective of the motive to engage in emission reduction projects for carbon marketing, factors such as cost, and project efficiency can never be overlooked. Given the options discussed in this report, Nebraska has a lot of potential for carbon offsetting or emission reduction projects that would not only reduce and …

Use Of Biochar And Zeolite For Landfill Leachate Treatment: Experimental Studies And Reuse Potential Assessment, Thanh Thieu Lam
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Leachate is a highly colored liquid waste product of landfills that contains high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), refractory organic matter, and heavy metals. It is commonly disposed to local publicly owned treatment works (POTWs). With these potent characteristics, it interferes with the physical, biological, and chemical treatment processes within POTWs. Sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBR) and hybrid subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CW) have been used in the past to treat landfill leachate, but their design and performance can still be optimized. Addition of low-cost adsorbent materials to SBBRs and CWs, such as biochar and zeolite, have the potential to …
