The Effect Of Mechanical Vibration On Alveolar Bone Following Experimental Periodontitis: A Time Course Study, Joshua Murphy Jul 2020

The Effect Of Mechanical Vibration On Alveolar Bone Following Experimental Periodontitis: A Time Course Study, Joshua Murphy

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Introduction: High-frequency vibration with low magnitude acceleration has varying effects on alveolar bone. The objectives of this study were to establish a murine model for periodontitis and to explore the best time window of this model to investigate the effects of high frequency, low magnitude mechanical vibration on alveolar bone following ligature-induced experimental periodontitis. Materials and Methods: Ninety-five 11-week-old inbred strain C57BL/67 male mice were randomly assigned into four groups: 1) healthy control (n = 9); 2) healthy + mechanical vibration (n = 8); 3) experimental periodontitis + no treatment (n=7); and 4) experimental periodontitis + vibration (n = 9). …

Oral Health And Quality Of Life: A Clinic-Based Sample, Kinan M. Al-Bitar Apr 2020

Oral Health And Quality Of Life: A Clinic-Based Sample, Kinan M. Al-Bitar

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Attachment loss due to periodontal diseases is associated with functional limitations as well as physical pain and psychological discomfort, which may lead to a reduced quality of life. This manuscript is intended to answer the question, if periodontal status has an effect on oral health related quality of life. Survey data were collected in an U.S. dental school clinical setting from n=97 adults (54% females, average age 51 years) in a cross- sectional study. Quality of life related to oral health was assessed with the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-49). Additional measures using the DMFT index, periodontal status, dental anxiety, …

Peri-Implantitis Risk Prediction Using A Computer Based Periodontal Risk Calculator Tool: A Retrospective Study, Walaa Al Zaibak Apr 2020

Peri-Implantitis Risk Prediction Using A Computer Based Periodontal Risk Calculator Tool: A Retrospective Study, Walaa Al Zaibak

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Introduction: Although literature is abundant on the diagnosis and management of peri-implantitis after it has occurred, to our current knowledge there are no studies that have specifically looked into the relationship between peri-implantitis and the periodontal risk assessment tool used for natural dentitions.Material and Methods: In this retrospective study, the patient population included patients (>20 years of age) who had implants placed and restored at Marquette University School of Dentistry (MUSOD) from 2008 to 2016. Further, the restored implants in these patients must have been in function for at least one year and followed up in the school …

Treatment Of A Periodontic-Endodontic Lesion In A Patient With Aggressive Periodontitis, Mina D. Fahmy, Paul G. Luepke, Mohammed Ibrahim, Arndt Guentsch Jan 2016

Treatment Of A Periodontic-Endodontic Lesion In A Patient With Aggressive Periodontitis, Mina D. Fahmy, Paul G. Luepke, Mohammed Ibrahim, Arndt Guentsch

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Case Description: This case report describes the successful management of a left mandibular first molar with a combined periodontic-endodontic lesion in a 35-year-old Caucasian woman with aggressive periodontitis using a concerted approach including endodontic treatment, periodontal therapy, and a periodontal regenerative procedure using an enamel matrix derivate. In spite of anticipated poor prognosis, the tooth lesion healed. This case report also discusses the rationale behind different treatment interventions. Practical Implication. Periodontic-endodontic lesions can be successfully treated if dental professionals follow a concerted treatment protocol that integrates endodontic and periodontic specialties. General dentists can be the gatekeepers in managing …
