The Greater Himalayan Slab (GHS) is composed of a north-dipping anatectic core, bounded above by the South Tibetan detachment system (STDS_ and below by the Main Central thrust zone (MCTZ). Assuming simultaneous movement on the MCTZ and STDS, the GHS can be modelled as a southward-extruding wedge or channel. New insights into extrusion-related flow with the GHS emerge from detailed kinematic and vorticity analyses in the Everest region. At the highest structural levels, mean kinematic vorticity number (Wm) estimates of 0.74-0.91 (c. 45-28% pure shear) were obtained from sheared Tethyan limestone and marble from the Yellow Band on Mount Everest. …

Gis Data: Caroline County, Virginia Shoreline Situation Report, Marcia Berman, Harry Berquist, Carl Hershner, Sharon Killeen, Karinna Nunez, Karen Reay, Tamia Rudnicky, David Weiss
Data
The data inventory developed for the Shoreline Situation Reports is based on a three-tiered shoreline assessment approach. In most cases this assessment characterizes conditions that can be observed from a small boat navigating along the shoreline. Hand-held GPS units are used to log features observed. The three tiered shoreline assessment approach divides the shorezone into three regions: 1) the immediate riparian zone, evaluated for land use; 2) the bank, evaluated for height, stability, cover and natural protection; and 3) the shoreline, describing the presence of shoreline structures for shore protection and recreational purposes. Three GIS coverages are generated. The car_lubc …

Data
The Center for Coastal Resources Management (CCRM) at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has generated Shoreline Situation Reports (SSRs) for coastal localities in the state of Maryland. This effort compliments a parallel effort in Virginia by the same group. SSRs were developed by VIMS in the 1970s for Virginia and have been the foundation for shoreline management planning in Tidewater Virginia ever since. CCRM has developed new protocols for collecting, disseminating, and reporting data relevant to shoreline management issues using state of the art mapping and remote sensing techniques. New SSRs are being generated on a county by …

New Visions Of Community In Contemporary American Fiction: Tan, Kingsolver, Castillo, Morrison., Magali Michael
New Visions Of Community In Contemporary American Fiction: Tan, Kingsolver, Castillo, Morrison., Magali Michael
Faculty Books
In this engaging, optimistic close reading of five late twentieth-century novels by American women, Magali Cornier Michael illuminates the ways in which their authors engage with ideas of communal activism, common commitment, and social transformation. The fictions she examines imagine coalition building as a means of moving toward new forms of nonhierarchical justice; for ethnic cultures that, as a result of racist attitudes, have not been assimilated, power with each other rather than power over each other is a collective goal.Michael argues that much contemporary American fiction by women offers models of care and nurturing that move away from the …

Background Behavior In Live Debates: The Effects Of The Implicit Ad Hominem Fallacy, John S. Seiter, Harold J. Kinzer, Harry Weger Jr.
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This study examined the effects of background nonverbal behavior displayed with the purpose of undermining one's opponent in live debates. Students participated as audience members in one of three versions of a live debate. In one version, the nonspeaking debater remained “stone faced” during her opponent's speech, while in the other two she displayed either occasional or nearly constant nonverbal disagreement. After viewing the debates, students rated the debaters' credibility, appropriateness, and debating skills, in addition to judging who won the debate. Analysis indicated that background nonverbal behavior influenced audience perceptions of some, but not all, dimensions of speaker credibility …

Instructional Technology & Learning Sciences - OCW
Innovation continues to occur on the internet at an extremely lively pace. What was once the realm of email, FTP, Gopher, and the Web is barely recognizable a mere 10 years later. Keeping up with the speed of innovation and maintaining a familiarity with the most recent tools and capabilities is handy in some professions and absolutely critical in others. This course is designed to help you understand and effectively use a variety of "web 2.0" technologies including blogs, RSS, wikis, social bookmarking tools, photo sharing tools, mapping tools, audio and video podcasts, and screencasts.
Synthesis Of Novel Polycyclic Aromatics And Heteroaromatics Via Cascade Cyclizations Of Enyne-Allenes And Enyne-Isocyanates, Hua Yang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports
Studies on the thermal cyclization of enyne-isocyanates led to a new synthetic pathway to synthesize heterocycles. It was found that the enyne-isocyanates underwent predominantly C2--C7 cyclization at high temperature and the cycloaromatization was facilitated by the addition of silyl chloride.;The C2--C6 Schmittel cyclization of benzannulated enyne-allenes can provide efficient synthetic pathway for the polycyclic aromatics. As a result, new synthetic pathways to synthesize the 1,2-bis[5-(11 H-benzo[b]fluorenyl)]benzenes and related compounds were developed by employing the Schmittel cyclization reaction. The nonbonded steric interaction led to the formation of syn-isomers as major products, which hold potential to complex with transition metals to catalyze …

The 26 December 2004 tsunami caused widespread destruction and contamination of coastal aquifers across southern Asia. Seawater filled domestic open dug wells and also entered the aquifers via direct infiltration during the first flooding waves and later as ponded seawater infiltrated through the permeable sands that are typical of coastal aquifers. In Sri Lanka alone, it is estimated that over 40,000 drinking water wells were either destroyed or contaminated. From February through September 2005, a team of United States, Sri Lankan, and Danish water resource scientists and engineers surveyed the coastal groundwater resources of Sri Lanka to develop an understanding …

Treating Soil Pentachlorophenol (Pcp) At Optimal Conditions Using Heme And Peroxide, Shyi Tien Chen, David King Stevens, Guyoung Kang, M. J. Hsieh
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
The environmental impact of pentachlorophenol (PCP) has been the subject of extensive research in recent years. Investigations of PCP degradation using both biotic and abiotic methods are extensively reported in literature. Based on some preliminary tests (not shown), an abiotic method was found for oxidative PCP degradation in soil under unsaturated conditions and a neutral pH. Reagents used were heme (a catalyst) and peroxide (an oxidant). From two screening tests (not shown), the heme and peroxide were identified as the most important factors on PCP degradation in highly PCP-contaminated soil. The objective of this study was to determine the optimum …

Georgia Superintendents' Assessment Of The Six Crucial C'S, Harvey A. Franklin
Georgia Superintendents' Assessment Of The Six Crucial C'S, Harvey A. Franklin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The quantitative research project examined the Georgia superintendents' assessment of their use of the six crucial C's in their job performance. The research method used for the study was a qualitative analysis of data collected from eight interviews of Georgia superintendents under contract during the 2005-2006 school year. Results of the study were used to address the three research questions: (1) extent to which the Georgia superintendents assess their use of the six crucial C's, (2) extent to which Georgia superintendents share the importance of the six crucial C's, and (3) extent to which Georgia superintendents rate their use of …
