College of Nursing and Health Sciences Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Project Publications

Background: Baccalaureate nursing students report high levels of stress and anxiety. Chronic stress in nursing students is on the rise and can increase the risk for suicide, depression, burnout, and increased academic attrition.

Objectives: The purpose of this EBP/QI project was to establish baseline stress and anxiety levels for senior baccalaureate nursing students and to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing the Benson Henry Institute (BHI) SMART program with nursing students.

Methods: Senior nursing students (n=32) self-selected into either the control or SMART group. The SMART group participated in 8 weekly 1.5 hour SMART sessions during the fall, 2020 semester. All …

Associations Between Internalizing Symptoms And Social Media Use In Young Adults With Chronic Pain, Jacqueline Mitzner Jan 2021

Associations Between Internalizing Symptoms And Social Media Use In Young Adults With Chronic Pain, Jacqueline Mitzner

UVM College of Arts and Sciences College Honors Theses

Chronic pain is estimated to effect 8% of young adults and is associated with decreased quality of life and limitation of social activities (Zelaya et al., 2020), as well as higher rates of internalizing symptoms (Noel et al., 2016). Given that both chronic pain and internalizing symptoms are associated with social withdrawal, it is important to understand how young adults with these comorbid concerns engage in other activities. Due to the increasing rates of social media usage, the current study examined the association between 3 functions of social media (diversion, personal integrative needs, and social integrative needs) and internalizing symptoms …

Results from some studies imply that antidepressant usage during pregnancy for the treatment of depression and other mood disorders can have negative effects on a child. Conflicting evidence indicates that the negative effects potentially caused by antidepressants are not as intense as the effects of untreated depression during pregnancy. Current research on antidepressant usage during pregnancy only examines general health measures in infants and toddlers and does not examine effects on older children who are able to be assessed for potential cognitive and …

Predictors Of Suicidal Ideation Among Formerly Incarcerated People During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Rachel Matthes Gehman Jan 2021

Predictors Of Suicidal Ideation Among Formerly Incarcerated People During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Rachel Matthes Gehman

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Background and purpose: Formerly incarcerated people die by suicide at a rate 6.75 times higher than the general population, but previous research has not identified factors that contribute to this heightened risk. The conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic may exacerbate both suicide risk factors and the stressors of reentry. In the framework of stress proliferation theory, this study uses path analysis to identify paths from incarceration history to environmental factors (i.e., financial stress), interpersonal factors (i.e., social support and conflict), psychological factors (i.e., depression and existential isolation, the feeling of being alone in one’s subjective experience), and their subsequent relationship …
