Pilot Testing A Qualitative Methodology To Evaluate The Perceived Benefits And Stressors Of Sole-Dog Ownership In Full-Time College Students, Emma Williams May 2020

Pilot Testing A Qualitative Methodology To Evaluate The Perceived Benefits And Stressors Of Sole-Dog Ownership In Full-Time College Students, Emma Williams

Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

The number of individuals acquiring pets is continually increasing, with 71.5% of Americans owning a pet in 2012. Companion animals are a huge source of benefits but owning them can also come with several stressors. However, little research has been conducted on the negative aspects of dog ownership. This pilot test evaluates the perceived stressors and benefits of sole dog ownership in full-time college students. The pilot aimed to hold three focus groups from which qualitative thematic data were collected and quantitative were collected from a demographic survey of participants. Participants were asked a series of questions about sole dog …

Menageries Multiple: An Introduction To Zoological Multiplicity In The Modern American Zoo, Emily D. Gratke Jan 2017

Menageries Multiple: An Introduction To Zoological Multiplicity In The Modern American Zoo, Emily D. Gratke

Scripps Senior Theses

American zoological parks have been sites of intense consumer and scholar interest since their origination in the 20th century. Today, zoos reside at a tenacious hub of ideologies, practices, and priorities contributed to by various stakeholder groups. I propose that the foundational cause of this tension is zoological multiplicity: the theory that through human practices and perceptions, animals can embody multiple identities. Via an exploration of zoological multiplicity in American zoos with specific focus on zoo management, zoogoer, and animal activist stakeholder groups, this project proposes the widespread acknowledgment and understanding of zoological multiplicity as a method to improve animal …

Intake And Digestibility Of Fescue Hay Supplemented With Co-Product Feeds, Omega J. Sanders May 2015

Intake And Digestibility Of Fescue Hay Supplemented With Co-Product Feeds, Omega J. Sanders

Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

Satisfying an animals' nutritional needs can help optimize performance and keep an animal healthy. Meeting these nutritional requirements is often complicated by the low quality characteristics of hay, requiring supplementation with concentrate feedstuffs to offset this low nutrient density. The objectives of this study were to determine the impact of supplementation with soybean hulls (SH), distiller's dried grains with solubles (DDGS), or a 50:50 mixture of the two (MIX) on ruminal fermentation characteristics and in situ forage disappearance in lactating and non-lactating ruminally-cannulated cows offered tall fescue hay. For this experiment, a basal diet of tall fescue hay was offered …

Effects Of Animal Science Agricultural Education Course Completion On Urban High School Students' Career Choice, Kristina Gowans May 2014

Effects Of Animal Science Agricultural Education Course Completion On Urban High School Students' Career Choice, Kristina Gowans

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study focused on testing the effects of agricultural education on urban high school students’ career choices. It looked into how students view agriculture, how they perceive their peers view agriculture, how their demographics are related to career choice, and if their career choice was changed to a different career upon completion of the study. The study showed a positive relationship between completing an agricultural education class in animal science and interest in going into an agricultural career. Further, females in the study were more likely to choose an agricultural career. After the completion of a school-based agricultural education program, …

Cal Poly Goat Program, Lauren Christensen Apr 2013

Cal Poly Goat Program, Lauren Christensen

Animal Science

The Cal Poly Goat Program was established in the Summer of 2012 to provide vegetation management services on the Cal Poly campus and to allow students to gain hands on experience with goats. Student interest in adding goats as an additional species in the Animal Science Department spurred the realization and development of the program. The department also experienced demand for goats to use for vegetation management at the animal units and around various facilities on campus. The Goat Program integrates Cal Poly’s hands-on, ‘Learn by Doing’ philosophy with sustainable management practices to serve the needs of students as well …

Mixture Of Volatile Fatty Acids Effect On Bioelectric Properties Of Acid Injury In The Equine Non-Glandular Stomach, Rilla Evelyn Reese May 2009

Mixture Of Volatile Fatty Acids Effect On Bioelectric Properties Of Acid Injury In The Equine Non-Glandular Stomach, Rilla Evelyn Reese

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to expose viable non-glandular (NG) mucosa from recently euthanized horses to Normal Ringers solution (NRS) and VFA mixtures (sub-threshold VFA mixture and VFA mixtures containing high acetic acid, high butyric acid and high propionic acids in NRS), at different pHs (1.5, 4.0, 7.0) in an in vitro Ussing Chamber system and to measure their effects on tissue bioelectric properties. After tissue exposure to NRS or VFA mixtures in NRS, tissue was examined under light microscopy for histopathologic evidence of cell swelling and necrosis. Horses (n=11) were euthanized and gastric tissue obtained. Tissues, except from …

Pregnancy Retention Of Bovine Recipients Following Transfer Of Embryos Exposed To A Prostaglandin F₂[Alpha] Receptor Antagonist, David Allen Roper May 2009

Pregnancy Retention Of Bovine Recipients Following Transfer Of Embryos Exposed To A Prostaglandin F₂[Alpha] Receptor Antagonist, David Allen Roper

Masters Theses

Increasing efficiency and success of multiple ovulation and embryo transfer continues to be a goal of researchers and practitioners. Reports of pregnancy rates exist; while few evaluate term development and offspring performance. Previously, Scenna, et al. (2008) exposed embryos to three collection medium treatments while being collected from superovulated, beef donors on day 7. Medium treatments consisted of commercial medium plus 1 mL DMSO (VEH), commercial medium plus 100 nM of AL 8810 (AL100), or a commercial medium plus 1000 nM of AL 8810 (AL1000). Embryos (n = 1,734 at 6 locations across 17 replicates) were transferred (fresh or frozen …
