The Relationship Between Ethnic Identity And Psychological Health: A Meta-Analytic Review, Julie Hewatt Grant Sep 2008

The Relationship Between Ethnic Identity And Psychological Health: A Meta-Analytic Review, Julie Hewatt Grant

Open Access Dissertations

Ethnic identity, or one's feelings of belongingness and affirmation with one's ethnic group, has been postulated to be related to one's psychological health. Specifically, it is thought that stronger ethnic identity is related to better psychological health. In order to fully investigate this relationship, a meta-analytic review and analysis was conducted utilizing all previous research on the relationship between ethnic identity and psychological health. This study sought to examine this relationship in more detail by dividing psychological health into two areas: 1) psychological functioning, and 2) psychological dysfunction. Both of these categories were examined and analyzed separately utilizing a random …

An Exploration Of The Relationships Among Individual And Interpersonal Goal Pursuit And Hedonic And Eudaimonic Well-Being, Erin Nicole Procacci Sep 2008

An Exploration Of The Relationships Among Individual And Interpersonal Goal Pursuit And Hedonic And Eudaimonic Well-Being, Erin Nicole Procacci

Open Access Dissertations

Studies in the areas of goal pursuit and well-being suggest that the goals people work toward in their daily lives are important contributors of well-being. However, research to date has focused primarily on aspects of the individual in goal pursuit even though goals are not pursued in isolation. In fact, there is evidence that this emphasis on the individual, particularly salient in Western cultures, has negative consequences at both the individual and community levels. With regard to well-being, data have indicated that it is best represented as two dimensional, including hedonic and eudaimonic well-being. However, the research on personal goals …

Transcriptional Regulation In The Peripheral Nervous System And The Role Of Stat3 In Axon Regeneration, Robin P. Smith Sep 2008

Transcriptional Regulation In The Peripheral Nervous System And The Role Of Stat3 In Axon Regeneration, Robin P. Smith

Open Access Dissertations

Several factors contribute to the failure of the central nervous system (CNS) to regenerate after injury. These include inhibition of axonal growth by myelin and glial scar associated molecules, as well as the intrinsic inability of adult CNS neurons to grow long axons in environments that are permissive for younger neurons. Neurons in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) display a much higher capacity to regenerate after injury than CNS neurons, as shown by conditioning lesion experiments and by microtransplantation of dorsal root ganglia neurons into CNS white matter tracts. Our central hypothesis is that neurons of the PNS express specific …

Connectivity And Genetic Structure In Coral Reef Ecosystems: Modeling And Analysis, Johnathan T. Kool Sep 2008

Connectivity And Genetic Structure In Coral Reef Ecosystems: Modeling And Analysis, Johnathan T. Kool

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation examines aspects of the relationship between connectivity and the development of genetic structure in subdivided coral reef populations using both simulation and algebraic methods. The first chapter develops an object-oriented, individual based method of simulating the dynamics of genes in subdivided populations. The model is then used to investigate how changes to different components of population structure (e.g., connectivity, birth rate, population size) influence genetic structure through the use of autocorrelation analysis. The autocorrelograms also demonstrate how relationships between populations change at different spatial and temporal scales. The second chapter uses discrete multivariate distributions to model the relationship …

Early And Late Diagenetic Processes Of Mississippian Carbonates, Northern U.S. Rockies, David Allen Katz Sep 2008

Early And Late Diagenetic Processes Of Mississippian Carbonates, Northern U.S. Rockies, David Allen Katz

Open Access Dissertations

Integrated sequence stratigraphy and geochemistry has significantly improved our knowledge of the formation and distribution of early and late diagenetic products in North American Mississippian carbonates. Deposition of the Madison Limestone occurred in concert with a major perturbation to the global C-pool, the timing of which was constrained by comparing secular variations in the delta13C values from the Madison Limestone with limited biostratigraphy. These early constraints were then improved by peak matching of 87Sr/86Sr values from this study with European brachiopod 87Sr/86Sr. The secular variations in the delta13C values were then applied as a chronostratigraphic tool to outcrops and subsurface …

Bullying Of Middle School Students With And Without Learning Disabilities: Prevalence And Relationship To Students' Social Skills, Silvana M. Spinelli-Casale Sep 2008

Bullying Of Middle School Students With And Without Learning Disabilities: Prevalence And Relationship To Students' Social Skills, Silvana M. Spinelli-Casale

Open Access Dissertations

Students who experience bullying have been shown to be at greater risk for forms of maladjustment including depression and loneliness (Hawker & Boulton, 2000), and social withdrawal (Olweus, 1993). Research indicates that bullying is especially severe in middle schools (Boulton & Underwood, 1992; NCES, 2002; Olweus 1993). Students with learning disabilities (LD) are considered to be particularly at risk due to the frequent co-occurrence of poor social skills with learning disabilities (Fox & Boulton, 2005). This study examined the percentage of victims, bullies, bully-victims and non-participants in bullying as reported by a sample of 255 students (144 with LD) attending …

Regulation Of Hsc Self-Renewal And Differentiation By Pumilio Proteins, Jennifer Zayas Sep 2008

Regulation Of Hsc Self-Renewal And Differentiation By Pumilio Proteins, Jennifer Zayas

Open Access Dissertations

Evolutionarily conserved Pumilio (Pum) RNA-binding proteins act as translational repressors during embryo development and cell fate specification. Previous work in the lab has shown that over-expression of Pum2 (Pum2-EML) supports maintenance and suppresses mutilineage differentiation of murine multipotent HSC/MPP-like cell line EML. The subsequent analysis of HSC markers and functional analysis has revealed that wt EML cells share the LKS CD34 positive phenotype, whereas the majority Pum2-EML cells are similar to LKS CD34 negative. The CD34 positive wt EML cells can be divided into CD34low, CD34med and CD34high subpopulations, whereas Pum2-EML CD34 positive cells correspond to CD34low subpopulation. Colony forming …

Investigation Of The Inter-Correlations Among Standardized Written And Performance-Based Assessments Of Measurement Content Knowledge Among Third Grade English Language Learners, Marcella D. Elliott

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide an empirical test of the widely held belief that performance-based assessment provides a fairer picture of English-language learners' mathematical skills and knowledge than does a standardized assessment. Specifically, I compared the performance of 94 third-graders on the measurement subscale of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) mathematics test to their performance on a set of measurement reasoning and applications that was drawn from their third-grade hands-on science curriculum. Then, I present examples within the non-standardized testing setting where students were provided with real-time language-based accommodations as recommended by the research literature. Finally, …

Reactions To Infidelity: Individual, Gender, And Situational Predictors Of Relationship Outcome And Forgiveness, Marcia B. Kimeldorf Aug 2008

Reactions To Infidelity: Individual, Gender, And Situational Predictors Of Relationship Outcome And Forgiveness, Marcia B. Kimeldorf

Open Access Dissertations

Infidelity in romantic relationships can be devastating, and can cause many complex emotional reactions. The Jealousy as a Specific Innate Module (JSIM) hypothesis posits that due to differing reproductive pressures over evolutionary history, men and women have evolved different mechanisms to respond to infidelity. JSIM proposes that men, due to fears of cuckoldry, will respond with intense jealousy to a partner's sexual infidelity. It proposes that women, who are certain of their maternity but may suffer severe consequences if their mate falls in love with another and diverts his resources elsewhere, will respond with intense jealousy to emotional infidelity. These …

Compliance Gaining Appeals And Sources Of Influence In Cognitive Behavioral Violence Prevention Fatherhood Groups, Maria Elena Villar

Open Access Dissertations

Cognitive behavioral violence prevention (CB-VP) parenting groups are commonly used for the primary and secondary prevention of violence. These groups use persuasive messages that target violence-related attitudes and cognitions, with the expectation that this will result in behavior change. Despite their frequent use as family violence prevention strategies, little is known about the actual messages being exchanged in CB-VP groups and how participants perceive and recall these messages. This study analyzes messages aimed at changing behaviors as recalled by Hispanic participants in federally funded Fatherhood groups in Miami, Florida. Applying concepts from violence prevention, behavior change messages were classified by …

Volatiles In Melt Inclusions From Mexican And Nicaraguan Volcanoes: Implications For Complex Degassing Processes, Zachary D. Atlas

Open Access Dissertations

The first section of this work examines melt inclusions in phenocrysts from Volcán Popocatépetl and Volcán de Colima within the Trans Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB). These inclusions are dacitic to rhyolitic. Trends in melt inclusion major element and water concentrations form the evolved extension of other Mexican volcanics including those presumably derived directly from primitive melts. Water concentrations in Popocatépetl and Colima melt inclusions are similar (0.3 to 3.4 weight percent Hsub2O). Melt-vapor equilibration pressures calculated from dissolved Hsub2O and COsub2 (Popocatépetl) or Hsub2O (Colima) in melt inclusions correspond to depths of entrapment of 12 km or less. Water and …

Body Burden Of Pahs And Cardiovascular Disease In The United States, John D. Clark Iii Jul 2008

Body Burden Of Pahs And Cardiovascular Disease In The United States, John D. Clark Iii

Open Access Dissertations

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental and occupational carcinogens that are produced by the incomplete combustion of organic material, such as from the burning of tobacco, coal, and petroleum products. In addition to causing cancer, exposure to PAHs is hypothesized to contribute to atherosclerosis and to lead to increased incidence rates of cardiovascular disease in populations. Considering the number of deaths attributable to tobacco smoke exposure, ambient air pollution, and occupational hazards, PAHs may be a significant contributor to the prevalence of cardiovascular disease in human populations. However, a clear exposure-response relationship between PAHs and measures of cardiovascular disease has …

Open Access Dissertations

Dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) is a pelagic species that is ecologically and commercially important in the western Atlantic region. This species has been linked to dominant oceanographic features such as sea surface temperature (SST) frontal regions. This work first explored the linkages between the catch rates of dolphinfish and the oceanography (satellite-derived SST, distance to front calculations, bottom depth and hook depth) using Principal Components Analysis (PCA). It was demonstrated that higher catch rates are found in relation to warmer SST and nearer to frontal regions. This environmental information was then included in standardizations of catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) indices. It was found …

The Contribution Of Homeostatically Expanded Donor Cd8 T Cells To Host Reconstitution Following Syngeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation, Melinda Roskos Keith

Open Access Dissertations

During homeostatic expansion, peripheral T cells proliferate in response to lymphopenia, in the absence of cognate antigen or costimulatory signals. Host CD8 reconstitution following hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) involves the de novo-generation of T cells in addition to the homeostatic expansion of mature donor T cells present in the graft and donor lymphocyte infusion as well as host T cells that survive conditioning. Although it is well appreciated that CD8 homeostatic expansion contributes to host CD8 reconstitution following HCT, the factors governing the extent of the contribution by donor CD8 homeostatic expansion to host reconstitution have not been precisely and …

The Effects Of Maturation And Experience On The Predatory Efficiency Of The Whitespotted Bambooshark, Chiloscyllium Plagiosum, Jennifer Louise Ciaccio

Open Access Dissertations

Foraging presents a significant challenge for neonatal predators. Both physical maturation and predatory experience may improve predatory abilities. To tease apart which improvements in predatory abilities were due to increased maturation and which to increased experience, several experiments that isolated the effects of maturation and experience were conducted. Individual whitespotted bamboosharks, Chiloscyllium plagiosum, improved predatory efficiency with both maturation and experience. Physical maturation, when isolated from experience, improved predatory efficiency of naïve sharks foraging on shrimp, an elusive prey, but not of sharks foraging on worms, a non-elusive prey. Predatory experience, when isolated from maturation, improved predatory efficiency of sharks …

Effects Of Variations Of Text Previews On The Oral Reading Of Second Grade Students, Susan R. Massey

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that there is a reciprocal relationship between comprehension and fluency during reading. The notion that oral reading fluency can facilitate reading comprehension is well established in the research literature on the development of reading comprehension. However, more recent models have questioned the unidirectionality of this relationship and have suggested that reading comprehension may increase fluency through reading rate. This hypothesis was examined via analyses of second grade students' oral reading of connected texts. Four previewing conditions which isolated lexical effects, comprehension effects, and prosody effects on oral reading fluency were …

This dissertation explores the spatial patterns and place-based characteristics of colorectal cancer (CRC) late stage incidence and CRC-specific mortality in Miami-Dade County. Because CRC is the second leading cause of death among all cancers and is almost 90 percent preventable through medical screenings, investigations of CRC disparities across groups and communities are extremely relevant in the fight against cancer. This paper analyzes the geographic distribution of CRC cases in Miami-Dade County between two periods, 1988-1992 and 1998-2002 to: a) identify significant "hot spots" or clusters of disease; b) investigate associations of CRC patterns with neighborhood level characteristics such as socio-economic …

Transcriptional Regulation Of Virulence Genes In Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli And Shigella Flexneri By Members Of The Arac/Xyls Family, Maria Carolina Pilonieta Jun 2008

Transcriptional Regulation Of Virulence Genes In Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli And Shigella Flexneri By Members Of The Arac/Xyls Family, Maria Carolina Pilonieta

Open Access Dissertations

Pathogenesis of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Shigella flexneri relies predominantly on members of the AraC/XylS family of transcriptional regulators, Rns (or its homolog, CfaD) and MxiE, respectively. Rns/CfaD regulate the expression of pili, which allow the bacteria to attach to the intestinal epithelium. Better understanding of the role Rns plays in virulence was attained by expanding our knowledge of the Rns regulon, revealing that it functions as an activator of cexE, a previously uncharacterized gene. By in vitro DNase I footprinting two Rns-binding sites were identified upstream of cexEp, both of which are required for full activation of cexE. …
