Correlation Between Particle Velocities And Conditions Of Abrasive Waterjet Formation, Wei-Long Chen Dec 1989

Correlation Between Particle Velocities And Conditions Of Abrasive Waterjet Formation, Wei-Long Chen

Dissertations

The velocities of water and abrasive particles in abrasive waterjet(AWJ) were measured by the use of Laser Transit Anemometer(LTA). A setup for the velocity measurement was constructed and a statistical technique was used to improve the accuracy of the velocity determination. A comparison of the magnitude of velocities determined by LTA, Piezoelectric Force Transducer and Schlieren Photograph clearly indicates the feasibility of the use of LTA.

The velocities of water and particles were measured for different diameters of water and slurry nozzles, abrasive mass flow rates and particle sizes. The performed experiments enabled us to evaluate the effects of conditions …

Application Of Microwave Technology To Effect On-Site Regeneration Of Gac, K.C. Mahesh Dec 1989

Application Of Microwave Technology To Effect On-Site Regeneration Of Gac, K.C. Mahesh

Theses

The off-site regeneration of granulated activated charcoal(GAC), spent as a result of stripping of organics from aqueous waste streams, represents a burdensome cost both because of the actual cost of regeneration and legal liability associated with shipping a hazardous waste off-site: that liability is reflected in huge potential costs associated with mishaps enroute for the self-insured or high premiums paid to the casualty insurance companies for those generators that are insured by third parties. Thus there is a need for the development of a process to effect on-site regeneration of spent GAC cost-effectively.

This thesis mainly focuses on the technical …

Fourier Image Synthesis And Slope Spectrum Analysis Of Deepwater, Wind-Wave Scenes Viewed At Brewster's Angle, Jan Arthur North Dec 1989

Fourier Image Synthesis And Slope Spectrum Analysis Of Deepwater, Wind-Wave Scenes Viewed At Brewster's Angle, Jan Arthur North

Theses

A semi-empirical model for the Fourier synthesis of deepwater, wind-wave scenes has been constructed for the analysis of water-wave slope spectra. The main simplifying assumptions of this model are 1) fully-developed wind-wave surfaces are quasi-homogeneous, quasi -stationary and are therefore treatable by Fourier methods, 2) the subsurface is both optically and mechanically deep, and 3) the small range of spectral wave components defines a fetch-limited, small amplitude condition. A nonlinear transformation of wave slope to reflected and refracted radiance in both horizontal and vertical polarizations was effected under the special conditions of Brewster-angle viewing under clear skies at a spectral …

Dynamic Behavior Of Co₂ Lasers, Li Zhang Dec 1989

Dynamic Behavior Of Co₂ Lasers, Li Zhang

Dissertations and Theses

Spontaneous pulsations have been observed in the output of a CO2 laser. The temporal waveforms, transverse mode patterns, and laser lines are simultaneously measured under various operation conditions. The experimental data show that these pulsations have a direct connection with the transverse modes. We interpret the oscillations as being caused by mode beating, and the frequency shift of the oscillation as resulting from mode pulling. The theoretical explanations for these effects are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Endless State-Of-Polarization Control For Coherent Optical Communication Systems Using Nematic Liquid Crystal, Scott H. Rumbaugh Dec 1989

Endless State-Of-Polarization Control For Coherent Optical Communication Systems Using Nematic Liquid Crystal, Scott H. Rumbaugh

Dissertations and Theses

One of the obstacles to coherent fiber-optic communications is the unpredictable polarization drift which necessitates the use of an active polarization controlling system to match the polarizations of the signal and local oscillator. The polarization match must be maintained during the reset of any of the finite range components to prevent loss of data. We present a novel and practical system which uses three liquid crystal devices for the polarization matching process. Also, the required reset control algorithm and its derivation are described in detail.

Influence Of Feedback Specificity And Simultaneous Goals On Task Performance, David W. Furst Dec 1989

Influence Of Feedback Specificity And Simultaneous Goals On Task Performance, David W. Furst

Student Work

A laboratory experiment was conducted examining the influence of feedback specificity and simultaneous quantity and quality goals on the performance of an assembly task including the effect of feedback specificity on perceptual and behavioral measures of intrinsic motivation. The hypotheses were framed in terms of a traditional goal setting model and a control systems-goal conflict model. Neither model was supported for the quantity performance measure in that varying the specificity of quantity of performance feedback did not result in differential quantity of performance. The traditional goal setting model was supported based on results from the quality performance measure . These …

Concurrent Validity Of The Pain Locus Of Control Scale And Its Relationship To Treatment Outcome Variables, Linda Kay Schaefer Dec 1989

Concurrent Validity Of The Pain Locus Of Control Scale And Its Relationship To Treatment Outcome Variables, Linda Kay Schaefer

Student Work

Studies have shown that locus of control orientation is related to emotional and behavioral adjustment to chronic pain. Researchers have begun the process of establishing the validity and reliability of the Pain Locus of Control Scale. This study was conducted to establish the concurrent validity of the PLC Scale at the time of follow-up from pain management treatment, an effort not previously undertaken. In addition, studies suggest that those persons with an Internal locus of control orientation demonstrate more favorable treatment outcomes, as compared to a Powerful others or Chance locus of control. This research examined the relationship between treatment …

Cigarette Smoking And Its Effect Upon Perceptions Of Source Credibility, Cari L. Tokheim Dec 1989

Cigarette Smoking And Its Effect Upon Perceptions Of Source Credibility, Cari L. Tokheim

Student Work

This thesis examined the effect of cigarette smoking on perceptions of source credibility. Twenty-five bi-polar adjectives were used to measure five dimensions of credibility (competency, character, sociability, composure, and extroversion) developed by McCroskey and Jenson. Subjects recruited from students enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (n = 272) were assigned one of four versions of a photograph depicting either a male or female model holding a cigarette, or those same models in identical photographs with the cigarette removed. Subjects were then asked to complete the credibility scales, based upon the person depicted in the photograph.

Results from the …

The Black Experience In Selected Nebraska Counties, 1854-1920, James D. Bish

Student Work

This work is a history of the black experience in the fifteen most densely black populated counties in Nebraska, excluding Douglas, from 1854 through 1920. Beginning with the formation of Nebraska Territory in 1854, the thesis studies the population, employment, and social status of blacks living in Nebraska throughout the frontier and postfrontier eras. Slavery and suffrage are critically examined throughout the territorial period. Following statehood, the impact of black migration into the state is studied, especially during the years 1879 and 1880. Massive migration of southern blacks into northern states occurred during those years, a result of the termination …

The Improvement Of Digital Image Classification Over An Urban Area: A Probabilistic Relaxation Approach, Yafei Lu Dec 1989

The Improvement Of Digital Image Classification Over An Urban Area: A Probabilistic Relaxation Approach, Yafei Lu

Student Work

Digital image classification is a technique to extract land cover information from imagery using certain classification schemes. Additional information, either in a map, digital or verbal format, from multi-sources other than satellite imagery can be integrated into a classification scheme to improve its performance. The research in this field is essential because data interpretation has long been a weak link between the functions of two powerful systems: data acquisition by the remote sensing system and data storage, renewal and retrieval by the geographic information system - that has been more and more involved in the geographical research with the development …

An Investigation Of The Combined Heat And Mass Transfer Processes In The Drying Of Hygroscopic Porous Media With Two Disparate Length Scales, Thomas Joseph Phillips

Doctoral Dissertations

A mathematical model describing the drying process in a hygroscopic porous medium with two disparate length scales is formulated. The mathematical model is used to identify the important dimensionless parameters appearing in the problem; and, a parametric study is performed to determine the effects of varying these parameters on the drying process. Of particular interest in this study is to apply the model to the drying of large, round hay bales. Therefore a discussion of how the results of the parametric study impact on the efficient use of a hay drier is also presented.

The results from the parametric study …

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Creativity In Person Centered Expressive Therapy, Mukti Khanna Dec 1989

A Phenomenological Investigation Of Creativity In Person Centered Expressive Therapy, Mukti Khanna

Doctoral Dissertations

The field of creative or expressive arts therapies seeks to harness the power for'creative expression to the process of psychotherapy. Although expressive arts therapies are increasingly being used with a variety of populations, including the elderly, the disabled, intergenerational, and cross-cultural groups, a comprehensive theory of expressive arts therapies has yet to emerge. In addition, there is a paucity of research of what works in such therapies. A comprehensive theory of expressive arts therapies, however, can only emerge from the expressive arts themselves, reflecting the uniqueness of the creative process that is at their foundation. Qualitative research focusing on the …

Effects Of Acidic Precipitation On The Soil Chemistry And Bioavailability Of Aluminum, Manganese, And Copper, Alan Christie Stam Dec 1989

Effects Of Acidic Precipitation On The Soil Chemistry And Bioavailability Of Aluminum, Manganese, And Copper, Alan Christie Stam

Doctoral Dissertations

The effects of acidic precipitation on the soil solution chemistry and bioavailability of AI, Mn, and Cu in soils from spruce-fir and oak-hickory forests were examined in laboratory, greenhouse, and field studies.

Soil solution concentrations of labile (inorganic) monomeric AI (LMAI) increased with decreasing solution pH and with increasing exchangeable AI and decreasing exchangeable Ca/AI of the soils. Dissolved organic matter decreased with decreasing solution pH and influenced decreases in nonlabile (organic) monomeric AI (NLMAI).

Simulated acidic precipitation increased LMAI concentrations in the laboratory equilibration and greenhouse studies, but not in the field plot studies in oak-hickory and spruce-fir forests. …

Relationship Of Free Fatty Acids And Acid Degree Values To Lipolytic Flavor Of Milk, Susan E. Duncan Dec 1989

Relationship Of Free Fatty Acids And Acid Degree Values To Lipolytic Flavor Of Milk, Susan E. Duncan

Doctoral Dissertations

Free fatty acids were studied in relation to acid degree value (ADV) and rancid flavor (RF) in milk and ADV evaluated as a method for measurement of RF. Selected fatty acids (FA) were blended in milk at .25µmol/ml milk with emulsifier. Recovery of FA was <.63 (C4-C8), 1.95-2.33 (C10-C16), 3.24 (C18:0)» and 4.12µmol/g fat (C18:1). Significant differences (p<.05) in recovery were found among all groups of FA. Recovery of 5 concentrations (.20, .25, .35, .45, .55 µmol/ml milk) did not differ (p>.05) for C4 (<.51 µmol/g fat), was proportional to added concentration of Cio with significant differences between low and high concentrations (1.94-4.64 µmol/g fat), and was significantly higher with increasing concentration of C18:1 (3.91-11.08 µmol/g fat). Fatty acid partitioning into skim (C4) or fat (C10/ C18:1), as separated by ADV procedure, was demonstrated …

Incorporating Subsistence Into Hedonic Price And Nutrient Demand Models, Cristanna M. Cook Dec 1989

Incorporating Subsistence Into Hedonic Price And Nutrient Demand Models, Cristanna M. Cook

Doctoral Dissertations

Economic theory concludes that utility from the consumption of goods increases at a decreasing rate. This condition also applies to the characteristics model of consumer choice. However, most applications for food use hedonic price equations and nutrient demand equations that do not account for declining marginal utility. Another problem is that nutrient valuation studies have not considered the level of nutrient adequacy or status. In addition, nutrient consumption models have not accounted for the nutritional status of the consumer when trying to identify the variables that influence nutrient consumption.

Data from the 1977-78 Nationwide Food Consumption Survey were used to …

Ethical Analysis Of Trust In Therapeutic Relationships, Michele A. Carter Dec 1989

Ethical Analysis Of Trust In Therapeutic Relationships, Michele A. Carter

Doctoral Dissertations

The problem of this philosophical study was to analyze the concept of trust for its nature, scope, and value, and to apply this analysis to an investigation of trust claims in therapeutic relationships between patients and practitioners. The analysis included semantic, literary, sociological, epistemological, and moral considerations. Classical philosophical texts were examined in order to determine the importance of trust as an instrumental value and as a requirement for morally desirable societies. Contemporary sociological theories regarding the function of trust were examined, as was the relationship of trust to the norm of truthfulness. Contemporary philosophical arguments which claim that trust …

Investigation And Evaluation Of A Computer Program To Minimize Vfr Flight Planning Errors, Peter Joseph Mcalindon Dec 1989

Investigation And Evaluation Of A Computer Program To Minimize Vfr Flight Planning Errors, Peter Joseph Mcalindon

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of computer aided flight planning on flight planning errors. Subjects were selected from the introductory flight courses at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. After the subjects completed a conventional VFR navigation log, they were asked to plan the return trip of the flight using a computer aided flight plan. It was initially expected that the computer aided flight plans would have fewer flight planning errors than those calculated using conventional methods. The results supported the hypothesis that flight planning errors are greatly reduced when computer aided flight planning techniques are used.
