Debris Slides And Related Flood Damage Associated With The September 1, 1951, Cloudburst In The Mt. Le Conte-Sugarland Mountain Area, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Donald Joseph Bogucki
Doctoral Dissertations
Numerous debris slides and considerable flood damage resulted from the September 1, 1951, cloudburst over the Mt. Le Conte-Sugarland Mountain area in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Over 100 individual slide scar heads were found in the study area, 41 of them in the Alum Cave Creek watershed, area of detailed field study.
The movement is thought to have been initiated by sliding at the head of the scar, with the mass of moving rock, soil, forest debris, and water developing flow characteristics downslope. Mt. Le Conte-Sugarland Mountain slide tracks may be divided into three sections: (1) the scar head, …

Baseline Response Rate And The Effect Of A Stimulus Which Precedes Response-Independent Reinforcement, William M. Arnold
Masters Theses
The relationship between baseline response rate and the effect of presenting a stimulus followed by response-independent reinforcement on baseline response rate was investigated in this study. Six pigeons were divided into two equal groups, one of which was conditioned to key peck on a VI-DRH schedule of food reinforcement, the other on a VI-DRL schedule of food reinforcement. Once responding had stabilized, a tone was introduced seven times during each session followed by a response-independent food reinforcement. The results indicated no change in the response rate of the VI-DRH group during the tone, and acceleration of responding during the tone …

Parameters Of Reward For Mongolian Gerbils (Meriones Unguiculatus), Charles E. Snow
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
This experimental investigation was designed to test which of four rewards would elicit the fastest and most consistent running speeds from Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). The four rewards were: Purina Lab Chow, .045 grams Noyes Precision Pellets, Sunflower seeds, and Hamster feed. Twenty-four male gerbils (90-120 days old) were randomly assigned to a deprivation group (D) and trained in a straight alley runway under a restricted ration deprivation schedule for 70 acquisition and 35 extinction trials. A second group of 24 subjects (non deprived group, ND) were similarly trained while on a free feed schedule.
Each group was further divided …

Effects Of Verbal Reinforcement On Children's Responses To Three Subtests Of The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children, James Thomas Russell Jr.
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of positive verbal reinforcement on the responses to three subtests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children. The subtests were comprehension, similarities, and vocabulary. These three subtests were given to thirty children of the Geary County, Kansas, Unified School System, whose chronological age ranged from ten years, one month to ten years, eleven months. Their intelligence quotients ranged from ninety-five to one hundred and five.
The responses to the three subtests were analyzed statistically. The results indicated that positive verbal reinforcement did significantly change the amount of verbal production and …
Councils Of Governments: A Study Focusing On Membership, Representation And Voting, Jerry Alan Matson
Councils Of Governments: A Study Focusing On Membership, Representation And Voting, Jerry Alan Matson
Dissertations and Theses
The Council of Governments is a significant new approach to metropolitan cooperation. Of the approximately 150 councils (as of January, 1970), all but 14 have been established since 1965. Councils across the country are characterized by great variety in organization and representation. This paper examines this complexity, particularly in terms of membership, representation and voting.
The first chapter is primarily a short history of the council movement and the forces which have helped to shape its development. The second examines the variety of council functions, organizational structures and financial arrangements.
Chapters III, IV and V are devoted to a detailed …

The European Powers In Africa: Can The Obstacles To National Unity Be Attributed To Them? Nigeria, A Test Case, Bassey John Ituen
The European Powers In Africa: Can The Obstacles To National Unity Be Attributed To Them? Nigeria, A Test Case, Bassey John Ituen
Dissertations and Theses
During the latter part of the nineteenth century, European powers acquired large territorial areas in Africa. These territories ignored the boundaries of old African tribal kingdoms and the African modes of life, because the new countries were to serve as 'common market' areas supplying Europe with the wealth of the tropics. Nigeria is an example of the new superstructure which in operation fails to become a homogeneous entity after the assumption of political power by the Africans. There are problems of existing tribal kingdoms, of geographic distribution of ethnic groups and of traditional values. The British colonization of Nigeria also …
Campaign Decision-Making In New Mexico, Sam A. Carnes Jr.
Campaign Decision-Making In New Mexico, Sam A. Carnes Jr.
Political Science ETDs
The purpose of this study is to investigate the decision-making mechanism which operated in a Democratic primary campaign for minor state office (Iieutenant-governor, attorney-general, secretary of state, land commissioner, and corporation commissioner) in New Mexico in 1970. Though the study is primarily a case study, the particular campaign is cast in the framework of game theory, utilizing some of the conceptual tools of game theory and analyzed in terms of players, strategies, communications, the payoff system, and the game environment.
A detailed description of the campaign setting or environment is included. This game factor is delineated into the political culture …
The Effect Of Perceptual-Motor Training On Maladaptive Behaviors Of Emotionally Disturbed Children, Julia Frances Hall
The Effect Of Perceptual-Motor Training On Maladaptive Behaviors Of Emotionally Disturbed Children, Julia Frances Hall
Dissertations and Theses
Twenty emotionally disturbed children between the ages of six and twelve from three agencies providing special treatment for behavioral or emotional problems were the subjects for this study. The subjects were divided into two major diagnostic categories, withdrawn and acing out, and then matched in pairs by age and diagnosis. One half of each pair was randomly assigned to the experimental condition and the remaining halves were assigned to the control condition. Both the experimental and control groups contained five withdrawn and five acting out subjects. Four experimenters were used, and each experimenter worked with two or four experimental children …
The Manifest Anxiety-Defensiveness Scale, Induction Of Threat To Self-Esteem, And The Resolution Of Dissonance, Dennis F. Gardner
The Manifest Anxiety-Defensiveness Scale, Induction Of Threat To Self-Esteem, And The Resolution Of Dissonance, Dennis F. Gardner
Student Work
It has been suggested that self-esteem is a significant contributing variable in determining defensive behavior (Asch, 1948; Janis & Field, 1959; Lazarus & Longo, 1953; Rosenzweig, 1938; Sears, 1940). Several studies suggest that individuals of high and low self-ssteem (SE) manifest different patterns of response to the experience of success and failure (Altrochi, Parsons, & Dickoff, 1960; Stotland & Hillmer, 1962; Stotland, Thorley, Thomas, Cohen, & Zander, 1957). Further, Slock and Thomas (1955) and Altrochi, Parsons, and Dickoff (1960) have shown that persons with high SE tend to avoid threatening materials, while persons with low SE tend to approach and …
Physiological, Cognitive And Motor Assessments Of Systematic Desensitization, Vey Michael Nordquist
Physiological, Cognitive And Motor Assessments Of Systematic Desensitization, Vey Michael Nordquist
Doctoral Dissertations
Twenty-four snake phobic subjects were randomly assigned to one of four conditions in order to test directly the mechanism underlying Systematic Desensitization therapy. Only those Ss who were treated with systematic desensitization showed significant reductions in physiological cognitive and motor estimates of fear. No Treatment Control and Hierarchy-Yoked Ss did not improve on a single measure after treatment. Relaxation-Yoked Ss did report significant decrements in fear after treatment, but their verbal fear decrement was not sustained when proximity to the phobic stimulus was increased. The results supported Wolpe's contention that systematic desensitization operates on the basis of …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Aggression In The Verbally Reported Content Of Dreams And Some Conceptually Related Measures Of Personality, Minos Belden Fletcher
Doctoral Dissertations
This study involved two major research objectives: (1) to compare males and females on the basis of aggression scores computed from verbally reported dreams; and (2) to test the general hypothesis that there are predictable relationships between measures of aggression in reported dreams and conceptually related measures of personality.
A total of 529 current night dreams collected from 24 male and 15 female college students were scored for aggression content by means of the Hall-Van de Castle Aggression Scale. From the raw dream scores, six specific measures of aggression were computed: average number of aggressive incidents per dream, percent of …
