"Invariant Imbedding" And Wave Propagation In Inhomogeneous Media, Crawford J. Maccallum Dec 1961

"Invariant Imbedding" And Wave Propagation In Inhomogeneous Media, Crawford J. Maccallum

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

We wish now to address ourselves to that problem which can be described in physical terms as the reflection and transmission of "waves" by and through some sort of "transition region" between two homogeneous media. At this stage we will work strictly within one dimension; later on this severe restriction will be somewhat eased. For simplicity of notation we will for the present give the transition region a finite thickness h; later on we will often allow h to become infinite when the disturbance due to the transition region dies away fast enough with distance.

Cortical Localization Of Handedness In The Rat, Luther W. Rook Dec 1961

Cortical Localization Of Handedness In The Rat, Luther W. Rook

Psychology ETDs

This study is a continuation of the Peterson handedness studies. Basically, these studies seek a means to investigate the nature of the neural equivalent of practice. Many investigators are interested in this problem, among them the conditioned reflexologists. They, however, have failed to identify any neural equivalent because they have failed to localize a conditioned reflex...

It should be emphasized that the primary concern of this and previous handedness studies is not with handedness per se. Handedness is a highly useful and sensitive means of determining the functionality of a small part of the nervous system. The objective of …

Flame Photometric Studies: Part A: Studies Of The Extraction And Flame Emission Of Yttrium; Part B: Droplet Size Of Aerosols In Flame Photometry; Part C: Studies Of The Reaction Zone Of An Oxygen Acetylene Flame, William Joseph Carnes Dec 1961

Flame Photometric Studies: Part A: Studies Of The Extraction And Flame Emission Of Yttrium; Part B: Droplet Size Of Aerosols In Flame Photometry; Part C: Studies Of The Reaction Zone Of An Oxygen Acetylene Flame, William Joseph Carnes

Doctoral Dissertations

Although the flame spectrum of yttrium has been well defined in previous work, very little information was available in regard to the effect of spectral and radiation interferences, other than the rare earths, upon the emission of yttrium. Information regarding the optimum conditions for the flame-photometric determination of yttrium was lacking also. The main objective of this phase of work was clarification of these points. Development of a suitable method of analysis for yttrium was also considered.

Resistance To Weakening Influences As A Function Of The Similarity Between Aquisition And Weakening Phases, Harry F. Desroches Dec 1961

Resistance To Weakening Influences As A Function Of The Similarity Between Aquisition And Weakening Phases, Harry F. Desroches

Doctoral Dissertations

In general there are three reasons for the study: (1) to test a specific hypothesis as deduced from a particular theoretical position, the generalization hypothesis, that resistance to weakening influences is a function of the similarity between acquisition and weakening phases, (2) to compare and to contrast the influences of various experimental operations in weakening a learned response, (3) to compare two groups of people who are believed to respond different to traditional methods of strengthening and weakening behaviors.

There is general agreement that much, if not most, of human behavior is learned. As the infant matures he meets new …

An Appraisal Of Psychologic Deficit In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Garret H. Yanagi Dec 1961

An Appraisal Of Psychologic Deficit In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Garret H. Yanagi

Doctoral Dissertations

It is the purpose of this study to investigate the relationship between Psychologic Deficit and the effects of brain damage and environmental experiences. It is an exploratory study, therefore concerned with descriptive, testable data which may yield hypotheses concerning cerebral palsied children.

Thus, an attempt has been made to point out various viewpoints and corresponding contradictory experimental evidence with regard to the cerebral palsied. One criticism which is inherent in many of these studies lies in the difficulty encountered in replicating them. This difficulty was seen in the lack of definition of terms, as well as of well defined groups, …

Some Reactions Of Phenothiazine And Certain Benzophenothiazines, John Charles Gilmer Dec 1961

Some Reactions Of Phenothiazine And Certain Benzophenothiazines, John Charles Gilmer

Doctoral Dissertations

Summary

The consideration of the medical importance of phenothiazine derivatives and the known cancer chemotherapeutic value of the nitrogen mustards made the synthesis of some nitrogen mustard derivatives of the phenothiazines of particular interest. In the course of this research the N-{2-[bis-(2-chloroethyl)amino]ethyl} derivatives of phenothiazine, 7H-benzo[c]phenothiazine, 7H-dibenzo[c, h] phenothiazine, and 14H-dibenzo[a, h] phenothiazine were synthesized for anticancer evaluation. Also submitted to the Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center for testing were the N-(2-chloroethyl) monofunctional nitrogen mustard derivatives of the first three phenothiazines mentioned above.

Appraising The Needs Of A Ninth Grade Reading Class, Wilena Barker Heald

Graduate Student Research Papers

Many students who enter high school at Milton-Freewater, Oregon, are unable to do satisfactory work because they can not read. This situation, although common in secondary schools in the United States, must be improved. At the present time the student whose reading ability is two to six years below his grade level is being placed in a reading class. The purpose of this paper was (1) to survey the general principles of good diagnosis, (2) to determine the criteria for selecting suitable tests, and (3) to suggest suitable tools for appraisal to be used by the classroom teacher.

J. S. Bach's Use Of Vocal Ornamentation, John A. Melrose Dec 1961

J. S. Bach's Use Of Vocal Ornamentation, John A. Melrose

Graduate Student Research Papers

In view of some misconceptions concerning the reading of these ornamental symbols, a study of how to interpret them accurately seems of value. Stenographic signs of later periods are superficially similar to Baroque ornaments and are frequently used mistakenly in performing music of the Baroque. Bach's embellishments should obviously be treated according to Baroque practice.

The S. P. G. In New England, 1760-1784: A Social Aspect Of The American Revolution, Irving Henry King Dec 1961

The S. P. G. In New England, 1760-1784: A Social Aspect Of The American Revolution, Irving Henry King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The history of the religious organizations in New England during the American Revolution has been written largely in terms of the experience of the Congregational Church. That is natural, for the part played by the Congregational Church loomed larger there than that of any other denomination, and it was the Congregational organization which took some of the most important steps in initiating the colonial resistance which led to independence. But while the role of the Anglican Church in the crisis was not so significant as that of the Congregational it certainly was not trivial. It constitutes a story that deserves …

Separation Of The N-Sphere By An (N - 1)-Sphere, James C. Cantrell Dec 1961

Separation Of The N-Sphere By An (N - 1)-Sphere, James C. Cantrell

Masters Theses

In this thesis we consider certain (n-1)-spheres embedded in S^n (we will frequently use the fact that S^n is topologically equivalent to the one point compactification of E^n). The problem is then to establish the existence or non-existence of certain topological properties of the two domains into which S^n is separated by the given (n-1)-spheres.

A New Hypothesis Conerning The Sequence And Nature Of Meiotic Events In The Female Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rhonda F. Grell Dec 1961

A New Hypothesis Conerning The Sequence And Nature Of Meiotic Events In The Female Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Rhonda F. Grell

Doctoral Dissertations

Three of the basic phenomena comprising the meiotic process are synapsis, crossingover, and disjunction. It is generally conceded that some form of pairing must precede crossingover; that the crossingover process occurs prior to disjunction; and that disjunction implies a previous association of elements. Construction of a model describing the causal relations among the three events might be expected to be fairly simple, since the possibilities are limited. Yet, no model has been proposed that is consistent with all the genetic data.

Some Observations Of Preliminary Incubation On Pasteurized Milk, Edward Ray Kelly Dec 1961

Some Observations Of Preliminary Incubation On Pasteurized Milk, Edward Ray Kelly

Masters Theses

The dairy industry strives to provide the public with safe and wholesome milk and milk products having good keeping quality. This goal can be accomplished through quality control programs and accepted methods and practices in the production and handling of the milk and its products. Today’s longer shelf life requirement, however, makes it necessary for maximum attainment of sanitation through proper processing and handling practices in order to maintain good keeping quality.

The destruction of pathogenic or disease producing microorganisms which may be present in milk and cream is carried out most readily by proper pasteurization. This practice renders milk …

Interrelationships Between Sulfate Metabolism And Tocopherols In The Weanling Rat, Young Ping Chin Dec 1961

Interrelationships Between Sulfate Metabolism And Tocopherols In The Weanling Rat, Young Ping Chin

Masters Theses

There have been numerous investigations in which reported observations point toward the existence of metabolic interrelationships between tocopherols, the sulfur-containing amino acids, and inorganic sulfur. In previous work, this laboratory has used mixtures partially composed of oxidized casein and casein to produce a protein source having a low methionine content and lending variation with respect to inorganic sulfate. Alpha protein, a purified soybean protein, is characteristically similar to oxidized casein in that both substances have a low sulfur amino acid content. Due to the expenses involved in the laboratory use of oxidized casein, the present investigation was undertaken to determine …

The Effect Of Length Of Dry Period Upon Milk Secretion, Warren Hall Maclin Dec 1961

The Effect Of Length Of Dry Period Upon Milk Secretion, Warren Hall Maclin

Masters Theses

The fact that dairy cows should have a dry period before calving has been recognized for quite some time. The dry period or rest period as it is sometimes called makes it possible for the cow to rebuild in her buddy the store of nutrients which she has drawn upon during the previous lactation. It is also known that as a cow progresses toward the end of her lactation the secreting cells of the mammary gland begin to involute or their functioning activity is greatly reduced. It is supposed that a dry period is necessary for recuperation and development of …

An Investigation Of Indeterminate Structures Stressed Beyond The Proportional Limit, Jack B. Joyce Nov 1961

An Investigation Of Indeterminate Structures Stressed Beyond The Proportional Limit, Jack B. Joyce

Civil Engineering ETDs

In the structural field the methods of designing have been geared to the development of materials...In a more current appraisal we see steel and concrete being updated still further. Pre-stressed concrete is a common sight in present day construction work and, to a lesser extent, the educated eye sees rigid frames designed to ultimate load criteria. Here again are cases where materials are studied and found to possess characteristics that are adaptable to advance methods. The key to all such improvements is still the realization and utilization of material properties.

A Survey Of The Foreign Policies Of Herbert Hoover During His Presidency, Adelaide B. Cambridge Nov 1961

A Survey Of The Foreign Policies Of Herbert Hoover During His Presidency, Adelaide B. Cambridge

Plan B Papers

This paper is a survey of the foreign policy of Herbert Hoover during his presidency. He is often associated only with domestic issues and the Great Depression, and his foreign policies have been somewhat unfamiliar. The more reading that was done, the more interesting and absorbing became his ideas and attempts to formulate his actions. The topic was chosen partially because of an intense interest in American history. There has been--and still is--a violently pro-Hoover or anti-Hoover sentiment and criticism regarding this former president. Another reason for this selection is that Mr. Hoover is a contemporary. There may be added …

The Reading Achievement Of Eleventh And Twelfth Grade Indian Students And A Survey Of Curricular Changes Indicated For The Improved Teaching Of Reading In The Public High Schools Of New Mexico, Irving D. Townsend

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The indigenous natives of the Western Hemisphere known as Amerinds, are endowed with numerous Mongolian characteristics indicating the racial stock from which they have derived. Today, those Amerinds residing in North America are known as American Indians, whose numbers total well over 400,000 in the United States. Of this total there are some 110. 000 living in the Southwest of which over 45,000 reside in New Mexico. This Indian population broadly includes a portion of the Navajo Tribe, which constitutes the greater percentage of the total, the Apaches, and the numerous groups of Pueblo Indians. There were undoubtedly earlier probes …

Long-Range Particles From Nuclear Fission, Ralph A. Nobles Oct 1961

Long-Range Particles From Nuclear Fission, Ralph A. Nobles

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This work is concerned with experimental observations of the long-range particles which are occasionally emitted by fissioning nuclei. These particles are known to be principally alpha particles and are of interest because they are associated with the configuration of the nucleus at the crucial time of scission. Observations were made of the energy spectra of long-range particles by means of a thallium-activated multiple CsI crystal scintillator device.

A Normative Study Of Some Developmental Aspects Of The Human Figure Drawings Of Children, Bessie M. Whitehead Oct 1961

A Normative Study Of Some Developmental Aspects Of The Human Figure Drawings Of Children, Bessie M. Whitehead

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

For many years there has been much interest in the use of human figure drawings as a projective technique for diagnostic use with the mentally ill. Psychiatric implications are attributed to practically every possible characteristic exhibited in the human figure, but until recently, little has been done toward establishing standards or norms describing objectively how various groups in the population actually perform when asked to draw a person. A clinician had no ruler by which to measure the performance of his client. He had no standard by which he could decide that the behavior exhibited was usual or abnormal for …

An Acoustic Simulator For Modeling Backscatter Of Electromagnetic Waves, Allen R. Edison Sep 1961

An Acoustic Simulator For Modeling Backscatter Of Electromagnetic Waves, Allen R. Edison

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Model experiments are commonly employed in situations where a full-scale experiment is uneconomical and where exact theoretical analysis is very difficult. The physical problem is scaled to convenient laboratory dimensions and a means is provided for controlling and measuring the parameters of the experiment. Measurements made in the model system are required to provide information on the time and space variations of functions which describe the real system. When interpreting results it is frequently necessary to consider "scale effects" which arise from certain parameters exerting a different influence in the model than in the real system.
