Living With A Machine : The Experience Of The Child Who Is Ventilator-Dependent, Sharon Isenhour Sarvey

Doctoral Dissertations

Children who are ventilator dependent have been living at home for some time now. Current research has considered home care to be the most appropriate environment for care of technology-dependent children with special health care needs. Research also has revealed much about the families who care for the children, the therapeutic management of their care and the efficacy of home care. No studies, however, have explored the experience of the child who has special needs, specifically those children who are ventilator dependent. There is an absence of first-hand knowledge about the experience of the children. The purpose of this study …

Language Extraction From Zns, Dowman Parks Varn

Doctoral Dissertations

Perhaps the most fundamental questions we can ask about a solid are "What is it made of?" and "How are the constituent parts assembled?" This is so elementary, and yet so basic to any detailed understanding of the thermal, electrical, magnetic, optical, and elastic properties of materials. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, concern over the placement of the atoms in a solid seems quaint and anachronistic, more suited to the dawn of the twentieth century. X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction tomography, to name a few, are powerful techniques to uncover structure in solids. With this …

A Study Of The Electronic Structure Of Α-Nav₂O₅ Using Angular-Resolved Soft X-Ray Spectroscopy, Gerald Woods Dec 2001

A Study Of The Electronic Structure Of Α-Nav₂O₅ Using Angular-Resolved Soft X-Ray Spectroscopy, Gerald Woods

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, we use soft x-ray spectroscopy to investigate the electronic structure of the highly anisotropic, strongly correlated transition-metal oxide d.-NaV 2O5. Band structure calculations and theoretical modeling of V-V correlation effects were employed to assist in the interpretation of the experimental data. Our results show that NaV2O5 is a Mott-Hubbard insulator in which the V d-band spanning the Fenni level is split into lower and upper Hubbard bands by strong correlation effects. Resonance inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements provide a direct measure of the d-d* excitations between the bands and show that the distance between the centroids of …

Design And Analysis Of An Attenuator-Based, Four-Channel, Differential, 150 Mhz, Linear-In-Db Vga With Sub-Nanosecond Delay Dispersion For Pet Applications, Bryan Scott Puckett

Doctoral Dissertations

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical imaging methodology based on the measurement of the concentrations of a positron-emitting radioisotope inside a three dimensional object. PET systems require hundreds of channels of high perfonnance detector readout electronics. The Phase I ASIC was developed in 1992 to reduce the cost, power consumption and complexity of PET systems and to improve reliability. The Phase I ASIC has been very successful and is a key component in thousands of commercial PET units currently in use.

Structural Variation In The Humerus And Femur In The American Great Plains And Adjacent Regions : Differences In Subsistence Strategy And Physical Terrain, Daniel J. Wescott

Doctoral Dissertations

Analysis of long bone cross-sectional architecture has been increasingly used in the last three decades to help reconstruct behavior, especially activity patterns, from archaeologically derived skeletal material. This research has shown a strong correlation between cross-sectional geometric properties and mobility and terrain. However, few studies have focused on the American Great Plains or looked at hypotheses using a large dataset with considerable spatial distribution and time depth. The purpose of this research project is to examine structural variation and sexual dimorphism in the humerus and femur within and among groups from the American Great Plains and adjacent regions. The goals …

The Aesthetic Diversity Of American Proletarian Fiction, Walter Edwin Squire Dec 2001

The Aesthetic Diversity Of American Proletarian Fiction, Walter Edwin Squire

Doctoral Dissertations

Almost as soon as a certain movement in early twentieth-century American literature began to be labeled "proletarian," numerous literary critics defined the genre as propagandistic, formulaic, and prescribed by a hegemonic and totalitarian American Communist Party. Recently, scholars of 1930s leftist literature have challenged previous dismissals of proletarianism by noting the diversity of participants and the complexity of individual works. Frequently, however, too much emphasis is placed upon the Communist Party, shared political and literary projects, and temporal parameters, all of which would suggest that proletarianism was an isolated phenomenon within the history of American literature. This study reveals that …

The Child Care Teacher's Role In Providing Reading-Related Literacy Experiences For Four-Year-Old Children, Sandra Stone

Doctoral Dissertations

Child-care teachers act as mediators of children's early literacy development by deciding what literacy experiences to provide in the classroom setting. Thus, it is critical to investigate the ways in which they are exercising this role. This study is a systematic replication of an earlier study by the investigator, and provides descriptive information about the reading-related literacy opportunities provided for children by child care teachers: the books they read and make available to children, the reasons for their book selections, and the resources they have for obtaining books. Eleven teachers of fouryear- old children from a sample of IO child-care …

A Study Of Domain Decomposition Methods Applied To The Discretized Helmholtz Equation, Robert Wallace Tramel Dec 2001

A Study Of Domain Decomposition Methods Applied To The Discretized Helmholtz Equation, Robert Wallace Tramel

Doctoral Dissertations

In this work a domain decomposition based preconditioner of the additive Schwarz type is developed and tested on the linear systems which arise out of the application of the Green's Function/Wave Expansion Discretization (GFD/WED) method to Helmholtz's equation. In order to develop the additive Schwarz preconditioner, use is made of a class of one-sided Artificial Radiation Boundary Conditions (ARBC) developed during the course of this work. These ARBCs are computationally shown to be quite accurate for use on their own. The ARBC's are used to radiatively couple the various sub-domains which are naturally part of domain decomposition based methods in …

Role Of Intracellular Ca²⁺ In Modulation Of Adiposity, Hang Shi Dec 2001

Role Of Intracellular Ca²⁺ In Modulation Of Adiposity, Hang Shi

Doctoral Dissertations

Intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) plays a key role in metabolic disorders associated with obesity and insulin resistance. Previous data from this laboratory demonstrated that increasing [Ca2+]i via stimulation of either receptor or voltage-mediated calcium channels stimulates the expression and activity of fatty acid synthase (FAS), a key enzyme in de nova lipogenesis, and inhibits basal and agonist-stimulated lipolysis in both human and murine adipocytes. Therefore, increasing [Ca2+]i appears to promote adipocyte triglyceride accumulation by exerting a coordinated control over stimulation of lipogenesis and inhibition of lipolysis. These data suggest that adipocyte [Ca2+]i is a logical target for pharmacological/nutritional regulation of adiposity. …

An Investigation Of Bicomponent Polypropylene/Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) Melt Blown Microfiber Nonwovens, Rongguo Zhao Dec 2001

An Investigation Of Bicomponent Polypropylene/Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) Melt Blown Microfiber Nonwovens, Rongguo Zhao

Doctoral Dissertations

As mono-component melt blown (MB) nonwovens are finding more applications in filtration, absorbency, hygiene, and apparel, bicomponent (bico) MB nonwovens with side-by-side (S/S) cross-sectional fiber geometry are attracting significant attention from both industries and academic institutions. The S/S bico fiber provides the possibility to combine the advantages of the two polymers to produce unique fiber and web properties, such as greater fiber crimp, when the two polymers provide different shrinking behavior under heat. This work studied polypropylene/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PP/PET) bico MB microfiber nonwovens, including the effects of processing conditions on fiber and web properties, process/structure/property relationships, and spinline dynamics. It …

Within each flour, cookies made with Betatrim at …

The Diagnosis Of Depression Using Psychometric Instruments And Quantitative Measures Of Electroencephalographic Activity, John Hancock Askew Dec 2001

The Diagnosis Of Depression Using Psychometric Instruments And Quantitative Measures Of Electroencephalographic Activity, John Hancock Askew

Doctoral Dissertations

Depressive disorders are among the most common and familiar of all psychiatric disorders, ironically, individuals suffering from depressive disorders are likely to never be diagnosed or treated. With the depressive disorders now being considered the source of an emerging public health crisis, a variety of public and private sector agencies have sought to address the issues of under-diagnosis and under-treatment. Despite their best efforts, about half of individuals with depressive disorders are not accurately diagnosed. The absence of a "gold standard" biological marker that can be used adjunctively with psychometric diagnostic instruments may be a factor that hinders primary practice …

Development Of A Continuous Bioluminescent Bacteria-Based System For Potw Influent Wastewater Toxicity Monitoring, Shijin Ren Dec 2001

Development Of A Continuous Bioluminescent Bacteria-Based System For Potw Influent Wastewater Toxicity Monitoring, Shijin Ren

Doctoral Dissertations

Influent wastewater toxicity causes upsets in the operations of biological wastewater treatment systems. Toxic compounds cause the loss of higher life forms in activated sludge, the formation of pin floes that settle poorly in downstream clarifiers and increase the addition of costly polymers. Ultimately, these effects lead to the degradation of effluent quality. In the most severe circumstances, influent toxicity can lead to a plant shut-down and the discharge of untreated wastewater into the environment. These effects can be avoided if influent wastewater is screened for toxicity and protective actions are taken to prevent damage to the activated sludge. Possible …

'A Living Lump Of Appetites': The Reinvention Of The Primitive In Naturalist And Modernist Literature, Gina M. Rossetti Dec 2001

'A Living Lump Of Appetites': The Reinvention Of The Primitive In Naturalist And Modernist Literature, Gina M. Rossetti

Doctoral Dissertations

When we consider the historical and cultural events that mark the latenineteenth through early twentieth centuries, we discover a growing fear about the "vanishing Anglo-Saxon." This response to the non-Anglo-Saxon or "primitive" differs significantly, however, from earlier, more romantic definitions and philosophies wherein the primitive is considered a positive alternative to civilization. While earlier eras conceive of the primitive as positive, these eras' judgments change as one considers turn of the twentieth-century American literature. It is this reassessment of the primitive that is the focus of my study. am particularly interested in how these ruminations about the primitive are codified …
