Adsorption Of Antimony By Birnessite And The Impact Of Antimony On The Electrostatic Surface Properties Of Variable-Charge Soil Minerals, Kalyn Alaine Vergeer May 2013

Adsorption Of Antimony By Birnessite And The Impact Of Antimony On The Electrostatic Surface Properties Of Variable-Charge Soil Minerals, Kalyn Alaine Vergeer

Masters Theses

Antimony (Sb) is a toxin that can be found in high concentrations in the soil due to anthropogenic sources. Antimony exists in soil as Sb(V) in the monovalent antimonate hydroxyanion. The adsorption mechanisms of Sb(V) are not well-characterized. The objective of this study was to further elucidate Sb(V) adsorption mechanisms by examining the impact of adsorption on surface charging characteristics of gibbsite, goethite, birnessite, and kaolinite. Also examined was Sb(V), SO4 [sulfate], and PO4 [phosphate] adsorption by birnessite. Electrophoretic mobility and potentiometric titrations were employed to examine the ζ-potential [zeta-potential] and net proton surface charge density as a …

A Search For Volatile Ices On The Surfaces Of Cold Classical Kuiper Belt Objects, Daine Michael Wright May 2013

A Search For Volatile Ices On The Surfaces Of Cold Classical Kuiper Belt Objects, Daine Michael Wright

Masters Theses

The surprisingly complex dynamical distribution of small bodies among and beyond the orbits of the planets has changed our understanding of Solar System evolution and planetary migration. Compositional information about the small bodies in the Solar System provides constraints for models of Solar System formation. According to most models, the Kuiper Belt population known as the cold classicals formed at distances far enough from the Sun for these objects to be composed of an appreciable fraction of volatile ices of diverse composition (H2O, CO2, CH4, light hydrocarbons, e.g. CH3OH) and their orbits …

Chemical Characterization And Anion Exchange Properties Of A West Tennessee Loess Soil, Jessica Lynn Ottinger May 2013

Chemical Characterization And Anion Exchange Properties Of A West Tennessee Loess Soil, Jessica Lynn Ottinger

Masters Theses

Loess soils of west Tennessee may potentially contain large amounts of subsoil metal oxides (Fe, Al, and Mn) which may retain and restrict the movement of conservative anions, such as nitrate (NO3). The potential utilization of large quantities of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum on these soils may displace subsoil NO3, releasing it to adversely impact sensitive aquatic environments. This research examines the depth distribution of Fe-, Al, and Mn-oxyhydroxides, pH, particle size distribution, and of the cation and anion exchange capacity and exchange phase composition to identify depths that have the greatest potential for anion …

Stand Dynamics And Fire History Of A Southern Appalachian Pine-Hardwood Forest On Rainy Mountain, Chattahoochee National Forest, Georgia, U.S.A., Alex William Dye May 2013

Stand Dynamics And Fire History Of A Southern Appalachian Pine-Hardwood Forest On Rainy Mountain, Chattahoochee National Forest, Georgia, U.S.A., Alex William Dye

Masters Theses

In the American Southeast, forest managers and conservationists are interested in evaluating how forest composition is changing in response to both human and natural disturbances. This study explored the stand dynamics of a pine-hardwood forest on Rainy Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest of Georgia over the last 115 years and analyzed the role fire has had as a disturbance in the forest. Increment cores were collected from trees in 30 plots, each 0.01 ha in area. The cores were used to determine date of establishment of each tree and create age structure charts for each plot and for the …

Big Homotopy Theory, Keith Gordon Penrod May 2013

Big Homotopy Theory, Keith Gordon Penrod

Doctoral Dissertations

Cannon and Conner developed the theory of "big fundamental groups." This is meant to expand on the notion of fundamental group and is a powerful tool that can be used for distinguishing spaces that are not distinguishable using the fundamental group. Turner proved several classical results, such as covering theory and Seifert-VanKampen for big fundamental groups. The purpose of this paper is to expand on the the theory, to refine the definitions, and to give more examples. Also, in this paper, we define big higher homotopy groups analogous to the way classical higher homotopy groups are defined.
