The Levellers' View Of History, Margaret Trowe Dec 1969

The Levellers' View Of History, Margaret Trowe

Honors Theses

The name "Levellers" applies to a political organization which functioned as a potent force in the politics of England in the late 1640s. During this period a fierce struggle for power was being fought, partly on an ideological level. The fighting of the first civil war had ended in 1646; the army of Parliament had defeated the royalist forces and had captured the King. In the wake of military victory, the various factions among the victors began to vie for power. In 1645 and 1646 tracts supporting the establishment of a representative democracy, the guarantee of civil and religious freedoms, …

The Diplomatic Mission Of Yancey, Rost And Mann: The Inadequacies Of Confederate Foreign Policy, 1861, Paul Zingg Aug 1969

The Diplomatic Mission Of Yancey, Rost And Mann: The Inadequacies Of Confederate Foreign Policy, 1861, Paul Zingg

Master's Theses

During the secession movement of January- February 1861, which culminated in the Montgomery Constitutional Convention, the young Confederate government established well-defined policy objectives for the purpose of securing European allies and material assistance. Basically these aims were three-fold: to secure recognition of the sovereign status of the Confederate states; to induce intervention by the European powers on the side of the Confederacy; and, after April, 1861, to gain a repudiation of the Union blockade from these same powers. Relying predominantly on the coercive power of cotton, the South began its quest for these objectives with diplomatic efforts directed at the …

Effect Of Self-Concept Upon Performance Following Failure Stress, Daniel Stern Aug 1969

Effect Of Self-Concept Upon Performance Following Failure Stress, Daniel Stern

Master's Theses

Jahoda (1958) has summarized the thinking, which has been done about a group of behaviors jointly labeled "positive mental health." After reviewing the conceptualizations of both phenomenologically and analytically oriented writers, Jahoda distilled six classes of responses, which have been listed as representative of mental health. These general classes of responses includes (1) positive self-attitudes, (2) self-actualizing behavior, (J) integrative behavior, (4) autonomous behavior, (5) accurate perceptual behavior, (6) behavior by which the subject obtains mastery over his environment. Of the six response classes listed, two were chosen for the present study. Specifically, the relationship between the general categories of …

Data Retrieval In Mass Spectrometry By An Optical Coincidence System, Cynthia Helmintoller O'Donohue Aug 1969

Data Retrieval In Mass Spectrometry By An Optical Coincidence System, Cynthia Helmintoller O'Donohue

Master's Theses

The object of this work was to develop an information storage and retrieval system for use in mass spectroscopy. The information to be stored was the compound's name, the mass spectrum, and distinctive physical and chemical properties. It was desirable that the system be one that could be used in the mass spectral laboratory. At the time this project was initiated, no system for mass spectroscopy had been developed with the characteristics of simplicity, rapid retrieval, and practicality of use in the laboratory without elaborate and space consuming equipment. Thus, a system was needed to aid the laboratory personnel in …

El Tema De La Muerte En Al Novela "La Muerte De Artemio Cruz" De Carlos Fuentes, Felina Noris Roine Aug 1969

El Tema De La Muerte En Al Novela "La Muerte De Artemio Cruz" De Carlos Fuentes, Felina Noris Roine

Master's Theses

The Effect Of Photoperiod On The Diurnal Fluctuations In Photosynthetic Rate Of Two Species Of Marine Phytoplankton, Richard Allmon Smith Aug 1969

The Effect Of Photoperiod On The Diurnal Fluctuations In Photosynthetic Rate Of Two Species Of Marine Phytoplankton, Richard Allmon Smith

Master's Theses

Photosynthetic rates were measured under constant conditions over a 24 hour period for cultures of Skeletonema costatum and Amphidinium carterae grown under various light - dark regimes. Photosynthetic rate fluctuated for both species under all photoperiods except for A. carterase under 8 hours light per day. Maximum photosynthetic rates occurred generally in the middle of the. light period and minimum rates.in the middle of the dark period. The ratio of maximum to minimum rates, or Pmax/min, differed significantly under the various photoperiods. Pmax/min values . for A. carterae were significantly greater than for s. costatum. The greatest Pmax/min for S …

The Effect Of Estradiol On Protein And Nucleic Acids Of The Liver Of Natrix Fasciata, Alex Jordan Jul 1969

The Effect Of Estradiol On Protein And Nucleic Acids Of The Liver Of Natrix Fasciata, Alex Jordan

Master's Theses

The effects of estradiol on RNA, DNA, and protein concentrations in the liver of Natrix fasciata (southern banded water snake) were investigated. Nucleic acid and protein concentrations were determined spectrophotometrically and expressed as mg/gm wet weight tissue.

Significant increases in both RNA and protein occured 48 hours after a single injection of estradiol. After 72 hours the mean RNA level in estradiol treated snakes had decreased significantly from the 48 hour level. The mean protein level at 72 hours, although lower than the 48 hour level, did not decrease significantly.

Liver DNA concentrations in experimental and control snakes were the …

A Comparison Of The Vibratory Muscle, Tail Epaxial Muscle, And Body Epaxial Muscle Respiratory Activities In Sistrurus Miliarius, Coluber Constrictor, And Natrix Fasciata, Craig Todd Kerins

Master's Theses

The rattlesnake can be distinguished from other types of snakes by its rattling apparatus. Klauber (1956) describes the rattle as an apparatus consisting of varying numbers of three lobed keratin segments. The segments arc arranged in a string by the loose interlocking of the segment lobes. The rattle is attached to tho. snake by the style, the modified terminal vertebra of the rattlesnake. The style is distally branched, forming a rigid core for the proximal rattle segments. A sound, unique to the rattlesnake, is produced when the segments arc vibrated at great frequencies by the snake's posterior tail musculature (Klauber, …

The Masque, A Courtly Entertainment, Kenneth Bailey Blanks Jul 1969

The Masque, A Courtly Entertainment, Kenneth Bailey Blanks

Master's Theses

In tho Courts of the Tudors and the Stuarts flourished a form of entertainment known as the masque . This exclusive pastime was characterized by gorgeous costumes, ingenious sets, imaginative scenery, music, dialogue, and dancing. Dancing was the most important element. It is said that "from the beginning to the end of its history, the essence of the masque was the arrival of certain persons visored and disguised to dance a dance or present an offering," often in the form of a compliment to the monarch. Dancing established a close intimacy between the masquers -- the disguised performers in the …

Significant Personality Variables Involved In Noetic Problems, Richard A. Depue Jul 1969

Significant Personality Variables Involved In Noetic Problems, Richard A. Depue

Master's Theses

The purpose of the study reported here is to examine further the nature of noogenic neurosis, and to attempt to determine what personality variables might be related to it and its development. This will be done by administering the PIL and a number of personality scales to samples of male college students and inpatient neurotics. From the resulting data it will be possible to teat the following hypotheses: (1) that the male college students will have a significantly higher mean PIL score than the inpatient neurotics; and (2) that significant correlations will appear among the relationships between PIL scores and …

A Critical Study Of The Seven Major Victorian Pessimistic Poets, Frank W. Childrey Jul 1969

A Critical Study Of The Seven Major Victorian Pessimistic Poets, Frank W. Childrey

Master's Theses

The following thesis is a critical study of seven sig nificant Victorian pessimistic poets. Having as its basis a seminar paper for Dr. Lewis F. Ball in which four of the Victorian pessimists were discussed, the original study was expanded in order to include the remaining three.

In this critical study, the emphasis has been placed mainly upon the themes characteristic of these pessimistic poets, and the poems that I consider to be the best examples of their various attitudes have been incorporated, either partially or in full, into the text of this thesis. Furthermore, though these chapters are not …

An Attempt To Measure The Diffusion Of Aluminum Into Natural Aluminum Oxide, Charles Edward Galaspie Jul 1969

An Attempt To Measure The Diffusion Of Aluminum Into Natural Aluminum Oxide, Charles Edward Galaspie

Master's Theses

The goal of this research was to investigate the diffusion of aluminum ions in natural aluminum oxide grown under atmospheric conditions. The basis for the approach employed here had been developed earlier by J. H. Christian and H. L.Taylor. However, these authors studied the diffusion of aluminum ions in an oxide grown in a pure oxygen atmosphere. They utilized a glass slide upon which aluminum metal was deposited in vacuo (10-11 Torr). Oxide was then allowed to grow on this metal by back-filling the vacuum with pure oxygen to a pressure of 40 to 50 m Torr while infrared …

The Relationship Of Liberalism-Conservatism To Anxiety And Ego Strength, Orpha Sherman Harris Jul 1969

The Relationship Of Liberalism-Conservatism To Anxiety And Ego Strength, Orpha Sherman Harris

Master's Theses

Through the medium or television our senses are everyday bombarded by the sights and sounds of student unrest on our college campuses. Radical students take over campus buildings, go on strike and refuse to attend classes until their "demands" are met. They want a "piece of the action" even to the hiring and firing of professors, and will risk expulsion to attain their goals. Even conservative students demand that curricula and instruction be upgraded though their methods for achieving their goals are less disruptive or dramatic. Liberal youth today are demanding the right to smoke marijuana,to "trip" on LSD, to …

Peracid Oxidation Of 3-Phenylindene, Christopher Peter Johnson Jul 1969

Peracid Oxidation Of 3-Phenylindene, Christopher Peter Johnson

Master's Theses

Indene oxide (indan, 1,2-epoxy; indene 2,3-oxid is first recorded in the literature in 1919. This compound was formed in practically quantitative yield by the treatment of indene bromo hydrin in ether with powdered potassium hydroxide. At this time Van Loon also reported the preparation of indene oxide by mechanical shaking of an anhydrous, ethere!al solution of the bromohydrin with finely powdered potassium hydroxide. The desired product was obtained in a 92-97% yield by this method. Indene oxide has been prepared in a similar manner from trans-2-chloro-l-indanol by treatment "with soda," distillation of the acetone in vacuo after 15 hours, and …

The Artistic Deformation Of Reality : An Ideological Portrait Of Tyranny In Tirano Banderas And El Señ̃Or Presidente, Roebrta Wynne Cohen Jul 1969

The Artistic Deformation Of Reality : An Ideological Portrait Of Tyranny In Tirano Banderas And El Señ̃Or Presidente, Roebrta Wynne Cohen

Master's Theses

Tyrants speak with many voices, bold many poses, and cast many shadows, but inevitably all wear the same face--the tragic face of tyranny itself. Many artists have painted the portrait; few have captured the essence of its tragedy. Valle Inclan and Asturias, each in his own way, depict the world of tyranny as grotesque and absurd in order to show the tragic condition of man. It is my intent to describe and analyze this grotesque world of tyranny, as portrayed in Tirana Banderas and Senor Preeidente; to compare the techniques used by each writer to create this world; to interpret …

An Edition Of Amelie Rives Troubetzkoy's The Young Elizabeth, Robert Walker Hungerford

Master's Theses

In the edition which follows, the objective has been to present a reading as well as an acting edition of Amelie Rives Troubetzkoy's Young Elizabeth. While major revisions to the manuscript will be discussed briefly, it has not been the purpose to present a perfect collation of the separate manuscripts of the play. The intent, instead, has been to bring to light a significant contribution to dramatic literature.

The introductory section has been divided into three parts. Part I constructs an evolution of the creation of the play and serves as the major part of the introduction. Part II …

A Thermogravimetric Study Of Polyvinylidene Chloride In Polymers, Charles Edward Singleton Jul 1969

A Thermogravimetric Study Of Polyvinylidene Chloride In Polymers, Charles Edward Singleton

Master's Theses

In the manufacturing of thin films such as cellophane, polymers employed as coatings greatly improve film functionality. Polymers such as polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate and many others are used as coatings or components of coatings designed to improve the functionality of a film. Selection of polymers with properties that will meet the requirements of the finished film product is a continuing process of film manufacturers. Physical and chemical characterization of the polymer along with coating functionality are the factors involved in the selection. Chemical composition is the most important factor affecting polymer characteristics and must be known if …

These counties are located in the north-central section of the state. The easternmost of the counties, Caroline, is located on the edge of the Tidewater section; Orange and Culpeper, in the Piedmont, extend to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The land is generally flat in the east, becomes more rolling as it approaches the mountains. Soils range from sandy loams in Caroline County to the sandy and clay loams with underlying crystalline rock …

Birth Order And Social Personality Characteristics In College Upperclassmen, James Stevens Robertson Jun 1969

Birth Order And Social Personality Characteristics In College Upperclassmen, James Stevens Robertson

Master's Theses

Over the past few decades, many research articles have accumulated linking birth order with different psychological variables. Much of the research was inspired by an interest developed in Alfred Adler's theory of birth order position. Historically, Adler (1931) considered birth order in the family an important psychological variable. He was strongly interested in the social determinants of personality and observed that the personalities of the oldest, middle, and youngest child in a family were likely to be quite different. These differences were attributed to the distinctive experience that each child has as a member of a social group. Therefore, going …

The Immediate Reaction To The Nat Turner Rebellion (August - November, 1831), Rebecca Saunders May 1969

The Immediate Reaction To The Nat Turner Rebellion (August - November, 1831), Rebecca Saunders

Honors Theses

Being primarily concerned with the safety of their wives and children, however, they felt it necessary to secure their protection. This was done in a variety of ways. Some in the grip of terror fled to the woods with only those provisions they could carry by hand, remaining there for days at the time. Others congregated in public places such as Cross Keys, Jerusalem and the surrounding county seats of Virginia and North Carolina. A letter from Jerusalem on August twenty-forth described the situation there: "Every house, room, and corner in this place is filled with women and children, driven …

Laud's Influence On The Star Chamber From 1630-1637, Leonard I. Sweet May 1969

Laud's Influence On The Star Chamber From 1630-1637, Leonard I. Sweet

Honors Theses

If the Virginia denominations could have forecast President Lincoln's request that the Commonwealth supply 2,340 troops to enforce the suppression of her sister southern states, unanimity would have prevailed from 1859 onward, and this paper would be unnecessary except for a single statement: The religious elements in Virginia endorsed secession. Although many of the clergy professed gifts of prophecy, their vision was eternal rather than secular. A religious calling meant exemplary stewardship as God's vassal, and as such their interests and concerns transcended political affairs. The men of the cloth kept abreast of current event,s but, as God's viceregents, felt …

Loyalists And Rebels : The Election Of 1928 In Virginia, Susan Parker May 1969

Loyalists And Rebels : The Election Of 1928 In Virginia, Susan Parker

Honors Theses

The election of 1978 was a unique event in the political history of Virginia. For the first time since Reconstruction the state went Republican in a national election, Herbert Hoover getting 53.9% of the total vote. This was not the beginning of a definite trend because the state did not go Republican in a presidential election again until 1952. The hold of the Democratic Party over the people appeared as strong as ever on both the local and national levels after this bolt.

Since the Civil War the Republican Party in the South had been identified with Reconstruction, emancipation, and …

Philosophy And Explication Of An Honors Organ Recital, Bruce B. Stevens May 1969

Philosophy And Explication Of An Honors Organ Recital, Bruce B. Stevens

Honors Theses

Franz Liszt is credited with the first application of the term "recital" to a performance of solo music: in 1840 he advertised a program of "recitals" of the piano of a number of pieces. Afterwards the word was appropriated for designation of the performance of a whole program, as opposed to the performance of an individual work. This is how it is used today --- the performance by one or two performers of a group of solo pieces

In forming and executing a recital the performer has the responsibility of planning intelligently as well as performing the music in the …

Virginia's Response To Nullification 1832-33, Robert Lawrence Musick Jr. May 1969

Virginia's Response To Nullification 1832-33, Robert Lawrence Musick Jr.

Honors Theses

The year 1832 found the United States in the midst of acute internal turmoil. Plagued by numerous and various problems, the Union felt its bonds strained to the bursting point. A serious rupture between the states and the federal government seemed imminent.

Congress in 1828 had enacted a tariff, known in the South as the Tariff of Abominations, which boosted the duties on certain manufactured goods and raw materials from about 37 per cent to 45 per cent. An effort by the South was made in 1832 to reduce this onerous burden. However, the new tariff law fell far short …

The Virginia Resolutions Of 1798 : A Study Of The Contemporary Debate, Alice J. Retzer May 1969

The Virginia Resolutions Of 1798 : A Study Of The Contemporary Debate, Alice J. Retzer

Honors Theses

The Virginia Resolutions of 1798 have been praised as a defense of the basic freedoms of person, speech, and press and equally denounced as an early precedent for the principles of states rights, nullification and interposition. Involved in the crisis which arose over the Alien and Sedition Laws were such outstanding Virginians and national figures as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Taylor, William Branch Giles, John Marshall, Patrick Henry, and Henry Lee. Without major emphasis upon the contributions or activities of these statesmen or the historical implications of the Resolutions, the purpose of this paper is to examine the contemporary …

Diplomatic Disobedience In American History 1781-1807, Thomas Lynwood Powers May 1969

Diplomatic Disobedience In American History 1781-1807, Thomas Lynwood Powers

Honors Theses

The United States of America owes much to its disobedient diplomats. They secured for this country its independence and original boundaries and later gained the expansion of these boundaries.

This paper examines early examples of such disobedience. It deals with the acts themselves, the viewpoints of the givers and the violators of instructions, and the overall significance to the United States.
