In recent times, plastic has become a highly favored choice for packaging due to its exceptional microbial, damage, and water-resistant properties. However, the alarming rise in plastic usage has led to adverse environmental pollution. This study aims to develop innovative food packaging solutions using renewable and compostable cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). This thesis comprises two related studies on the barrier performance of novel food packaging materials, including oxygen barrier and oil/grease barrier properties. The goal of the first study was to enhance the mechanical and barrier properties of the cellulose nanofibril (CNF) films by inducing fibrils orientation for food packaging applications. …

Modeling Forest Growth Using Sentinel-2-Derived Variables And Site Data, Peter G. Larson Dec 2023

Modeling Forest Growth Using Sentinel-2-Derived Variables And Site Data, Peter G. Larson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Growing stock volume (GSV) is an important metric for determining economic yield, carbon sequestration and other ecosystem services. GSV has traditionally been estimated in situ by measuring individual trees in a stand. This process is slow and expensive, and, as a result, is not a viable means to estimate GSV on a large scale. It is also not feasible in places that are difficult to access and in places that do not have reliable management records. Multispectral optical sensors mounted on satellites are an important technology for monitoring forest resources because they offer the possibility of measuring forest resources quickly …

Regeneration Response To Salvage Logging Following Tornado Disturbance, Colby K. Bosley-Smith Dec 2023

Regeneration Response To Salvage Logging Following Tornado Disturbance, Colby K. Bosley-Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In an era of increasing natural disturbances, successful tree regeneration has grown more difficult to achieve. Salvage logging, a common management response to disturbance, may further impede regeneration success, although published literature currently remains inconclusive. In 2013, a rare tornado in northcentral Maine, USA, and subsequent salvage operation created three clear ‘treatments’ for evaluation of post-disturbance regeneration: blowdown, blowdown followed by salvage logging and an undisturbed control. In the summers of 2022 and 2023, (nine and ten) years post-tornado, we revisited this site to examine regeneration outcomes.

During the summer of 2022, we evaluated stand structure and regeneration success of …

Elucidating The Pd Active Sites Of Bimetallic Gold-Palladium Catalysts Using Chemisorption And Titration Techniques, Andrew T. Boucher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A bimetallic nanoparticle catalyst combines two different metals on an oxide support, which can increase the selectivity towards useful products that may be too tightly bound to a monometallic catalyst. To explore the surface properties of such a system, we made a group of four PdAu bimetallic catalysts with varying gold mass loadings to compare with a parent Pd catalyst. The parent catalyst was synthesized using ion exchange, and gold was added to this parent Pd catalyst using incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) to create four bimetallic catalysts. All catalysts were characterized using H2 and CO chemisorption in tandem with …

Advances In Cellulose Nanomaterial-Based Foams For Environmental Applications, Md Musfiqur Rahman Dec 2023

Advances In Cellulose Nanomaterial-Based Foams For Environmental Applications, Md Musfiqur Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of metal-oxide nanoparticles adsorbents is limited to fixed-bed columns in industrial-scale water treatment applications. This limitation is commonly attributed to the tendency of nanoparticles to aggregate, the use of non-sustainable and inefficient polymeric resins as supporting materials, or a lack of adsorption capacity. Foams and aerogels derived from cellulose nanomaterials have unique characteristics, such as high porosity and low density, which enables their use in a variety of environmental applications, including water treatment. However, the overall use of cellulose nanomaterial-based foams in various environmental sectors is limited due to the high cost of production associated with time- and …

Spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana; SBW) outbreaks are cyclically occurring phenomena in the northeastern USA and neighboring Canadian provinces. These outbreaks are often of landscape level causing impaired growth and mortality of the host species namely spruce (Picea sp.) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.). Acknowledging the recent SBW outbreak in Canadian provinces like Quebec and New Brunswick neighboring the state of Maine, our study devised comprehensive techniques to assess the susceptibility of Maine forests to SBW attack. This study aims to harness the power of remote sensing data and machine learning algorithms to model and map the susceptibility of …

Quantifying Tidewater Glacier-Fjord Environments In The Rapidly Changing Regions Of West And South Greenland, Sydney Baratta Dec 2023

Quantifying Tidewater Glacier-Fjord Environments In The Rapidly Changing Regions Of West And South Greenland, Sydney Baratta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Greenland Ice Sheet has undergone rapid mass loss over the last four decades, primarily through solid and liquid discharge at marine-terminating outlet glaciers. The acceleration of these glaciers is in part due to the increase in temperature of ocean water in contact with the glacier terminus. However, quantifying meltwater injection and heat transport can be challenging due to iceberg abundance, which threatens instrument survival and fjord accessibility. Additionally, acceleration and eventual retreat of tidewater glaciers onto land can change glacier forcing, completely altering fjord water-meltwater dynamics. Here, we couple in situ and remote sensing methods to quantify the upper-layer …

Forest Management In A Changing Climate: Integrating Social And Biopysical Sciences To Inform Adaptive Responses To Future Uncertainty, Peter Breigenzer Dec 2023

Forest Management In A Changing Climate: Integrating Social And Biopysical Sciences To Inform Adaptive Responses To Future Uncertainty, Peter Breigenzer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Forests provide numerous ecological and socio-economic benefits, yet climate change is creating novel and extreme conditions that threaten forests and disrupt traditional management practices. To address future uncertainty about how to manage forests amid a rapidly changing climate, researchers have developed adaptive management strategies that move away from using historical ecological baselines as management goals. However, despite increases in adaptive forest management frameworks, there are still concerns that private woodland owners (PWOs; also known as family forest owners or non-industrial private landowners) are not adopting beneficial practices. Additionally, since tree canopies often buffer understory microclimates (i.e., fine scale variation in …

Using Probe Data To Understand The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Roadway Safety, Ennis W. Marshall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic there was an observed decrease in traffic safety in the United Sates. New England was no exception to this, with traffic fatality rates increasing in Maine and Connecticut. This increase was attributed to the possibility that drivers had more opportunities to speed following the implementation of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders on roads with drastically reduced volume and decreased speed enforcement. To determine the state of research into the pandemic's effect on traffic safety around the world, an extensive critical review was conducted. The reviewed studies showed that roadways did indeed become less safe with …

Spatial And Temporal Variability In Snow Properties And Firn Volume Across The Juneau Icefield In Southeast Alaska, Mikaila Mannello

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Glaciers are important freshwater resources which have far reaching impacts on a range of local to global systems and processes, including ecosystems and societies. As global climate continues to change, the response of glaciers has largely been reductions in ice mass and widespread retreat. A high degree of accumulation and ablation occurs in the near surface which is exposed to the atmosphere. The Juneau Icefield (JIF) has, up until the mid-2010s, historically responded climate change anomalously where its main drainage, Taku Glacier (here forward referred to its native name T’aakú Kwáan Sít’i), has been advancing while all other JIF outlet …

Context-Driven Behavior: Improved Contextual Reasoning For Context-Aware Agents, Christian L. Wilson Dec 2023

Context-Driven Behavior: Improved Contextual Reasoning For Context-Aware Agents, Christian L. Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the last three decades, a considerable amount of research has been dedicated to improving an artificial agent's ability to recognize and deal effectively with context. In this paper, I discuss a framework for a novel form of contextual reasoning. Unlike existing contextual reasoning frameworks, which allow an agent to apply its contextual knowledge after it is operating in an instance of a known context, the model I discuss allows an agent to reason about context proactively. With a proactive model, an agent forecasts the future contexts it will encounter, then takes steps to ensure its behaviors are appropriate for …

Effects Of Sous-Vide Processing And Acidic Marination On Physicochemical Quality, Shelf-Life, And Consumer Acceptability Of Blue Mussel (Mytilus Edulis) Meats, Sara Gundermann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sous-vide cooking is a thermal processing method in which a raw food is vacuum sealed in a pouch and then placed into water below 100°C for a controlled amount of time. It is particularly good for cooking meats because of its precise control over temperature and time, which results in an ideal food texture for consumers. This method also prevents the food from coming in contact with oxygen, which can lead to spoilage that reduces product quality and shelf life. Acidification is a food preservation method that utilizes acids to lower the pH of foods, making the environment less conducive …

On The Anti-Adipogenic Function Of Collagen Triple Helix Repeat-Containing Protein 1, Matthew E. Siviski Dec 2023

On The Anti-Adipogenic Function Of Collagen Triple Helix Repeat-Containing Protein 1, Matthew E. Siviski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adipogenesis is regulated by the coordinated activity of adipogenic transcription factors, including PPAR-gamma (PPARG) and C/EBP alpha (CEBPA). Thus, dysregulated adipogenesis predisposes adipose tissues to adipocyte hypertrophy and hyperplasia. We have previously reported that mice possessing a homozygous null gene mutation in collagen triple helix repeat-containing protein 1 (CTHRC1) have increased adiposity compared to wildtype mice, supporting the concept that CTHRC1 regulates body composition. Herein, we investigated the anti-adipogenic activity of CTHRC1. Using 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, we showed significantly reduced adipogenic differentiation in the presence of CTHRC1 commensurate to marked suppression of Cebpa and Pparg gene expression. In addition, CTHRC1 increased …

Experimental Measurement Of Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer Between Two Macroscale Planar Media, Md Shofiqul Islam Dec 2023

Experimental Measurement Of Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer Between Two Macroscale Planar Media, Md Shofiqul Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Radiative heat transfer between two media separated by a gap smaller than the wavelength of thermal radiation (10 μm at room temperature) is referred to as near-field RHT. Near-field RHT exceeds the RHT between two blackbodies which is the maximum limit for RHT in the far-field regime (i.e., when the separation gap is much larger than the thermal wavelength). Due to this enhanced heat transfer, near-field RHT has found promising applications, for power enhancement of thermophotovoltaic devices, thermal rectification, localized cooling, and photonic cooling to name only a few. Graphene is an ideal material for near-field RHT applications as it …

Numerical Investigation Of Subglottal Stenosis Effects On Human Voice Production, Dariush Bodaghi Dec 2023

Numerical Investigation Of Subglottal Stenosis Effects On Human Voice Production, Dariush Bodaghi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation aimed to advance knowledge of how subglottal stenosis impacts voice production physiology. An in-house fluid-structure-acoustic interaction approach based on the hydrodynamic/acoustic splitting technique was employed. This technique was rigorously verified for simulating phonation by matching the acoustic behavior to a compressible flow solver for phonation-relevant geometries. Simulations of an idealized 2D vocal tract model demonstrated the effects of supraglottal acoustic resonance on vocal fold kinematics and glottal flow waveform. Results showed that the acoustic coupling between higher harmonics and formats generated pressure oscillations, modifying vocal fold dynamics and glottal flow rate.

A major novelty was the incorporation and …

Here, our goal was to study the mass balance of enzymatic-mechanical processes that coproduces cellulosic sugars and nanocelluloses, evaluating the technical feasibility of converting lignified and non-lignified materials.

First, we have determined a feasible 50:50 mass ratio …

Nonsmooth Epidemic Models With Evolutionary Game Theory, Cameron Morin Dec 2023

Nonsmooth Epidemic Models With Evolutionary Game Theory, Cameron Morin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the utilization of game theory and nonsmooth functions to enhance the accuracy of epidemiological simulations. Traditional sensitivity analysis encounters difficulties when dealing with nondifferentiable points in nonsmooth functions. However, by incorporating recent advancements in nonsmooth analysis, sensitivity analysis techniques have been adapted to accommodate these complex functions. In pursuit of more accurate simulations, evolutionary game theory, primarily the replicator equation, is introduced, modeling individuals’ decision making processes when observing others’ choices. The SEIR model is explored in depth, and additional complexities are incorporated, leading to the creation of an expanded SEIR model, the Be-SEIMR model.
