An Adiabatic Study Of The Positronium Negative Ion And Other Three-Particle Systems., Javier Botero Jan 1986

An Adiabatic Study Of The Positronium Negative Ion And Other Three-Particle Systems., Javier Botero

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In an effort to unravel the dependence of the dynamics of three-bound-particle systems on the relative masses of the particles, an adiabatic treatment in hyperspherical coordinates is used to study the ground state and some doubly excited states of Ps('-) (positronium negative ion) and other three-particle systems, including H('-) and M('-) (muonium negative ion). Two different methods for the solution of the adiabatic eigenvalue equation are presented; one uses a "prediagonalized" basis of hyperspherical harmonics, and the other uses an asymptotic basis which consists of hydrogenic functions for the positronium. Potential curves for Ps('-) and M('-) in the ('1)S('e), ('1)P('o), …

Equine Herpesviruses Type 1 And 2: Growth And Cytopathic Expression In Organ Cultures Of Equine Respiratory Epithelium And In Cell Cultures (Electron Microscopy, Morphogenesis)., Emmanuel Eddie Brako

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The pathogenesis of equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) and type 2 (EHV-2) respiratory infection was studied in cell and organ cultures by infectivity assays following experimental infections (growth kinetics), and by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The cell cultures included fetal donkey and pony alveolar macrophages (FDAM/FPAM), fetal equine kidney (FEK), rabbit kidney (LLC-RK(,1)), and african green monkey kidney (VERO) cells. Organ cultures were derived from respiratory tissues (nasal, tracheal and pharyngeal mucosae) of seronegative donkey (F1D1) and pony (F1M1) fetuses, and of a seropositive adult pony (A1). In the cell cultures, EHV-1 multiplied and produced cytopathic effects (CPE) …

An Electronic Load Compensator For Arc Furnaces (Reactive Current, Static Var Compensator)., Mickey Dale Cox Jan 1986

An Electronic Load Compensator For Arc Furnaces (Reactive Current, Static Var Compensator)., Mickey Dale Cox

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An electronic compensator is described that is capable of compensating the reactive current drawn by arc furnaces and other nonlinear, time-varying loads. Consisting of three independent single-phase pulse-width modulated (PWM) inverters, along with appropriate controller and detector stages, the proposed compensator responds quickly to sudden load changes and compensates the reactive current drawn by the load. Unlike conventional static var compensators, the electronic compensator can also supply the active current demanded by the load if an energy source independent of the utility is available. Simulations are conducted, including the modelling of the furnace current and voltage waveforms during the early …

Effect Of Ownership Structure On Efficiency: A Comparative Analysis Of Various Organizational Forms (Stochastic Frontier, Allocative Efficiency)., Daniel Omer Cote Jan 1986

Effect Of Ownership Structure On Efficiency: A Comparative Analysis Of Various Organizational Forms (Stochastic Frontier, Allocative Efficiency)., Daniel Omer Cote

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research aims at testing the effects of ownership structure on efficiency of various organizational forms: privately-owned regulated electric utilities (PR), publicly-owned electric utilities (PU), and consumer-owned cooperative electric utilities (CO). Because of the attenuation of their structure of property rights and high enforcement costs, it is expected that all three organizational forms (PR, PU, CO) will show some level of inefficiency. CO is expected to be more efficient than PR and PU since it shows: (a) more homogeneity of interest among principals; (b) more individual ownership claim over the assets; (c) a simpler political market (efficiency as the main …

Extreme Elements In Semigroups (Quasiorders, Green's)., Carol Esther Collins Jan 1986

Extreme Elements In Semigroups (Quasiorders, Green's)., Carol Esther Collins

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

We study the elements of a semigroup which are minimal or maximal with respect to Green's quasiorders. Part 1 begins with a preliminary review. The sets of minimal elements are characterized in terms of minimal ideals. We discuss the relationship between the min set of a semigroup and the min set of a subsemigroup. The sets of maximal elements are characterized, and it is shown that these sets do not necessarily satisfy any inclusion relationships to each other. We discuss the max sets of subsemigroups and product semigroups. Conditions are given under which the max sets and min sets can …

Jurors' Decisions In A Simulated Trial Of The Pms Defense: Background Characteristics And Attitudes Toward Menstruation., Marjorie Carole Donohoe

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This mock jury study assessed the feasibility of utilizing Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) as a substantive defense in a capital case. One hundred-eighty mock jurors were asked to render judgments in identical cases of spouse murder with one of three defenses: (1) temporary insanity due to PMS; (2) temporary insanity with a reported history of psychiatric treatment; and (3) temporary insanity brought about by extreme emotional trauma. Results indicated that mock jurors rejected an insanity defense for the PMS defendant. Jurors were more willing to render an NGRI (Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity) verdict for the defendant with a documented …

Circadian Lipogenic Responses To Insulin And Prolactin., Anthony Henry Cincotta Jan 1986

Circadian Lipogenic Responses To Insulin And Prolactin., Anthony Henry Cincotta

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Lipogenic responsiveness to insulin was investigated at different times of day in freshly isolated hepatocytes and in primary cultured hepatocytes of Syrian hamsters, Mesocricetus auratus held on 14 hour daily photoperiods (lights on: 08.00) by following (('14)C)acetate incorporation into total cell lipid. The influence of prolactin on lipogenesis was tested by adding the hormone in vivo and directly to primary cultured hepatocytes. The findings of these studies are unique in that they demonstrate important roles of temporal interaction between prolactin and insulin in regulation of lipogenesis in cultured hepatocytes. They are summarized as follows: (1) A circadian variation of lipogenesis …

Chemical And Physical Characteristics Of Pepper Mash And Hot Pepper Sauce., Abdul Rahman Awad Jan 1986

Chemical And Physical Characteristics Of Pepper Mash And Hot Pepper Sauce., Abdul Rahman Awad

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three different treatments of salt 6, 8 and 10% were used in the process of aging hot pepper mash in oak and plastic barrels over a period of two years. The chemical characteristics of the changes during the aging process of these mashes were determined. These characteristics included pH, titratable acidity, salt content, color changes and total pectic substances. The pectic substances were degraded by the hot pepper pectic enzymes very rapidly after only a few days of aging. This degradation could be retarded by increasing the salt content of the mash or by aging in oak barrels. However, the …

A Quasi-Exclusive Measurement Of Carbon-12 (Carbon-12, 3alpha)X At 2.1 Gev/Nucleon., Jon Maurice Engelage

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The cross section, (sigma)(('12)C + T (--->) 3(alpha) + X) or (sigma)(3(alpha)), and excitation energy spectrum, d(sigma)(3(alpha))/dE('*), for ('12)C have been measured for 2.1 GeV/nucleon ('12)C using a 0.9(g/cm('2)) target of ('12)C. The d(sigma)(3(alpha))/dE('*) spectrum was found to include excitation energies in excess of 50 MeV. The dissociation of ('12)C into three (3) alpha particles at these excitation energies is evidence for clustering in the ('12)C nucleus.

Functional Organization Of The Gustatory System In The Brains Of Ictalurid Catfish: A Combined Electrophysiological And Neuroanatomical Study (Taste, Viscerotopic, Sensory Maps, Forebrain)., Jagmeet Singh Kanwal

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study utilizes electrophysiological and neuroanatomical techniques to investigate the functional organization of the gustatory system in the brainstem and the forebrain of the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus. Neuroanatomical studies indicate an overlapping, segmental pattern of projection of glossopharyngeal-vagal branches in the vagal lobe. The vagal nerve complex is divisible into an interoceptive input (consisting of general visceral fibers) from abdominal viscera and an exteroceptive-branchial component (consisting of special and general visceral fibers) innervating the oro-pharyngeal region. The interoceptive-visceral input converges onto the exteroceptive, oro-pharyngeal input in the nucleus intermedius of the vagal lobe (nIV). In addition, extra-oral and …

Effect Of Water-Management On The Etiology And Epidemiology Of Rice Blast Caused By Pyricularia Oryzae Cav., Choong-Hoe Kim

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This research was conducted to examine the nature of the difference in resistance to blast under different water-management systems. Two cultivars; M-201, susceptible, and Brazos, partially resistant to blast, grown in flooded and upland (unflooded) field plots were inoculated with race IH-1 of Pyricularia oryzae in 1984 and 1985. Final disease ratings on M-201 and Brazos averaged 77.6% and 39.8% under upland conditions and 1.1% and 0.1% under flooded conditions, respectively. When blasted plants in upland plots were flooded, the rate of blast development decreased on Brazos but changed little on M-201. No increase in disease was observed when flooded …

Stories And Storytelling In The "Libro De Buen Amor": Juan Ruiz's Use Of Folktales To Admonish, Persuade And Deceive (Spain)., Cynthia Powell Jayne Jan 1986

Stories And Storytelling In The "Libro De Buen Amor": Juan Ruiz's Use Of Folktales To Admonish, Persuade And Deceive (Spain)., Cynthia Powell Jayne

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Libro de buen amor, a fourteenth century Spanish text by Juan Ruiz, is an extensive and complex poem rich in partially hidden messages. Thirty-five popular medieval tales form an integral part of the body of the work, and convey important information to the reader through the text of the tales and through the storytelling context created by the author. Scholars have studied the tales most often from an historical perspective, and analyzed them separately from the central narrative; or have studied the textual materials with little emphasis on the function of the tales. Although such studies provide valuable information, …

The Content Of Implicit Leadership Theories: An Investigation Of Achievement Orientation, Task Orientation, And Relationships Orientation Under Varied Task Difficulty And Achievement Conditions., Joseph King Kavanaugh

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study of cognitive categorization explores the content of the schema "emergent leader." Three variables, each with two levels, are rotated to form eight leader profiles. These variables are achievement, task, and relationships orientations. Each profile is evaluated by subjects on two dependent measures, leader qualifications and leader acceptance. Profiles are rank-ordered based on ratings given, establishing the schema structures for qualified leader and acceptable leader, which in turn establish minimal conditions for leader emergence. The emergent leader is defined as one who is both qualified and acceptable to group members. Level of task difficulty and the perceiver's achievement motivation …

The Christian Preacher As Poet: A Method For Exposition Of Narrative Portions Of Scripture Based On Aristotle's "Poetics"., William Sherman Phillips Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

It is the thesis of this study that Aristotle's Poetics provides the basis for a method of exposition that is "distinctively appropriate" for preaching upon the narrative portions of Scripture. The relationship between Aristotelian poetics and narrative exposition of Scripture is examined in terms of the following two questions: (1) How does Aristotelian poetics meet the expository or interpretive need for narrative exposition of Scripture? (2) How does Aristotelian poetics meet the exhortatory or applicative need for narrative exposition of Scripture? The following arguments are made: (1) Aristotelian poetics provides the basis for a method of narrative exposition that unifies …

Cadastral Surveying In Colonial South Carolina: A Historical Geography., Linda Marie Pett-Conklin Jan 1986

Cadastral Surveying In Colonial South Carolina: A Historical Geography., Linda Marie Pett-Conklin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Colonial South Carolina's cadastral pattern evolved as the product of a variety of factors. Foremost was the ability of settlers to choose the sites of their landholdings. This authority was limited, however, by official policies that prevented settlers from determining the size, shape, and quality of land in their grants. Expressed rules for surveying riparian and inland tracts in rectangular shapes resulted in a more regular pattern of landownership than is generally assumed in a metes and bounds survey. Within the guidelines of these and other policies, colonist nonetheless were permitted to occupy land in non-contiguous tracts resulting in a …

Sociologists And The Vietnam War: A Historical Document Analysis (Commodification, Post-Industrial)., Robert Earl Sanderson Jan 1986

Sociologists And The Vietnam War: A Historical Document Analysis (Commodification, Post-Industrial)., Robert Earl Sanderson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Textbooks are important representative statements of certified and legitimated knowledge within an academic discipline, and the manner in which introductory sociology textbooks assess society reflect the power and sophistication of theories in discerning social patterns and structures. That the pivotal historical event of the Vietnam War and its implications for contemporary American social institutions was virtually omitted in our sample of one hundred-twenty textbooks raises critical issues for sociology. Content analysis of Vietnam War era textbooks (1954-1975) revealed 75% of the sample, divided among four major research orienting paradigms extant in sociology, ignored mention of the war and only the …

Church Buildings Enter The Urban Age: A Louisiana Example Of The Church In Settlement Geography (1885-1930)., Gail L. Schlundt Sechrist

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The type of church building being erected today is quite different from the traditional white steepled church on the village green. Church buildings and their location in the community have gradually changed as American religion has become more complex. the changes in religion reflect the dramatic transformation of American society from a rural to an urban culture. This process began after the Civil War, but it was not widely acknowledged until the last decades of the nineteenth century. The transformation was not limited to the large urban centers, but can be seen in towns and villages across the nation. Various …

The Relation Among Stressful Life-Events, Affective Responses, And Headaches (Migraine, Muscle-Contraction)., Craig Douglas Waggoner Jan 1986

The Relation Among Stressful Life-Events, Affective Responses, And Headaches (Migraine, Muscle-Contraction)., Craig Douglas Waggoner

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Stress is frequently reported as a major contributing factor in both migraine and muscle-contraction headaches. The general conclusions of studies investigating the stress-headache relations are that headache sufferers experience a significant amount of stress in their lives, that stress can precipitate headache attacks, and that headache subjects tend to overreact to stress. The laboratory method and scales measuring major life-events have typically been used in studying stress but have several limitations, particularly for studying exacerbations and remissions of symptoms. Increasing the comprehensiveness of stress measurement, beyond the traditional life-events approach, by assessing stress and affective states on a daily basis …
