Winter Food Habits Of Mink In Southern Louisiana, Andrew Jason Dolan Aug 1986

Winter Food Habits Of Mink In Southern Louisiana, Andrew Jason Dolan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mink food habits were determined by examining digestive tracts from animals trapped over four winters from forested wetland, crawfish farm, brackish marsh, fresh marsh, and ricefield habitats. In addition, an abdominal fat index was used to determine general body condition. Over all study areas, crawfish were the most important food items in mink diets, occurring in 64.6% of the tracts. Other major food groups - in order of decreasing frequencies of occurrence - were mammals, fishes, reptiles and amphibians, insects, and birds. Mink digestive tracts from the forested wetland habitat contained the greatest variety of food items. Forested wetland and …

Rumors, Runaways, Revolt!: An Overview Of Slave Unrest In Colonial And Territorial Louisiana, Morris Lewis Witten May 1986

Rumors, Runaways, Revolt!: An Overview Of Slave Unrest In Colonial And Territorial Louisiana, Morris Lewis Witten

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A major problem in the historiography of slavery in Louisiana is the reliance of too many historians on the early narratives. Because they lack scholarly citations and often contain erroneous information, evaluations of slavery based on these early sources are often inaccurate. By examining four periods of slave unrest in colonial and territorial Louisiana — the 1829-1830 conspiracy known as "Samba’s Revolt," the 1795 conspiracy at Pointe Coupee Parish, the incident of runaway slaves at Natchitoches in 1804, and the 1811 uprising in St. Charles Parish — one can determine how errors in fact, once they enter the history of …

Spectroscopic Studies Of Bacterial Iron-Sulfur Proteins (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance, Magnetic Circular Dichroism)., Deborah Ellen Bennett

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Iron-sulfur proteins play a vital role in metabolism; mediating such life-sustaining processes as aerobic and anaerobic respiration, nitrogen fixation, and photosynthesis. This work employs low temperature magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and UV-visible spectroscopy to characterize the iron-sulfur clusters of the following bacterial proteins: Azotobacter vinelandii ferredoxinI, Thermus thermophilus ferredoxin, Escherichia coli nitrate reductase and the rubredoxin and ferredoxin from Clostridium pasteurianum. Novel 3Fe-xS clusters were identified in A. vinelandii FdI, T. thermophilus Fd, ferricyanide treated C. pasteurianum Fd, and E. coli nitrate reductase. The uniformity of the magnetic and electronic properties of these clusters in both …

Delayed Onset Of Muscle Soreness: Creatine Kinase As A Marker For Tissue Damage (Pgf(2a) Metabolite)., John Douglas Boatwright Jan 1986

Delayed Onset Of Muscle Soreness: Creatine Kinase As A Marker For Tissue Damage (Pgf(2a) Metabolite)., John Douglas Boatwright

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Twenty college age males participated in a weight-lifting experiment, 3 sets of 10 repetitions at 70% 1RM for the squat, to examine the time courses between creatine phosphokinase (CPK), prostaglandin F(,2) alpha metabolite (PGF(,2a) met) and ratings of perceived soreness (RPS). Both groups, aspirin (n = 10) and placebo (n = 10), received medication (3g/day) for four consecutive days, starting 1 day prior to workout. Ratings of soreness and blood samples were taken pre- and immediately post-exercise, and at 24 h intervals for 3 days after exercise. There was no significant difference (p < 0.05) between the groups for CPK and RPS across time, but the prostaglandins were significantly different (p < 0.01) at all time intervals between groups. Changes seen across time were quadratic for all variables. The 24 h prostaglandin level was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the pre-, post-exercise and 72 h levels, but not significantly different from the 48 h level. Ratings of soreness were not significantly different (p < 0.05) at the 24 and 48 h intervals, but both were significantly higher than at all other time intervals. The mean CPK levels at 24 and 48 h were not significantly different (p < 0.05), but the 24 h CPK level was significantly higher (p < 0.05) from the other time intervals. There was a significant correlation (p < 0.01) between the time courses of CPK and RPS. It was concluded that CPK can be used as a marker for tissue damage and that prostaglandins did not influence the subjects' perception of muscle soreness or the release or uptake of CPK.

Facilitative And Inhibitory Interactions Among Estuarine Meiobenthic Harpacticoid Copepods (Commensalism, Benthos, Louisiana)., George Thomas Chandler Ii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Louisiana, USA, marshes, the harpacticoid copepods Scottolana canadensis and Pseudostenhelia wellsi are community co-dominants with similar lifestyles. Scottolana canadensis is a semi-sessile burrow-dweller capable of subsurface suspension and deposit feeding. Pseudostenhelia wellsi is a semi-sessile tube-building copepod that continuously corkscrews back and forth within its tube and appears to graze on the inner tube walls. Monospecific patches of both species (250 (.) 5cm('-2)) were generated in laboratory microcosms to determine their effects on colonization by two completely errant, burrowing harpacticoids, Nitocra lacustris and Cletocamptus deitersi, that have similar foraging and burrowing behaviors and similar effects on sediment structure. Pseudostenhelia …

Follower Incremental Compliance As A Function Of Leader Self-Monitoring Skills And Leader Situational Control (Discretion)., Tanya Cheer Clemons

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the moderating effects of two task variables--task structure and leader discretion--on the relationship between leader self-monitoring and the organizational outcomes of subordinate satisfaction, commitment, and job performance. It was hypothesized that task structure would be a negative moderator of the leadership-organizational outcomes relationships, whereas leader discretion would be a positive moderator. That is, leader self-monitoring would be significantly correlated with measures of subordinate satisfaction, commitment, and job performance when task structure was low and leader discretion was high. Data were collected from 58 upper-middle level managers of a large chemical processing plant, their 58 immediate superiors, and …

Studies On The Molecular Cloning Of A Gene For Beta-Glucosidase From A Bacillus Cereus/Cellulomonas Sp. Hybrid Bacterium Derived Through Protoplast Fusion., Eun Soo Han

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A (beta)-glucosidase gene was cloned from a cellulolytic bacterium, which was obtained by hybrid-formation between Bacillus cereus and a Cellulomonas sp. through protoplast fusion, into Escherichia coli plasmid pBR322 using recombinant DNA techniques. E. coli strain transformants of JM83 harboring this cloned plasmid were able to utilize cellobiose as a carbon source. (beta)-glucosidase activity was assayed in these cells by P-nitrophenyl (beta)-D-glucopyranoside (PNPG) hydrolysis. Hybridization of the cloned DNA fragment with DNA from the hybrid organism was performed by Southern transfer (92) and DNA/DNA dot blot procedures. The hybridization data strongly suggested that the DNA cloned into pBR322 was from …

Application Of Synoptic Weather Types In The Analysis Of Evaporation In Southern Louisiana (Climatology)., Gregory James Mccabe Jr Jan 1986

Application Of Synoptic Weather Types In The Analysis Of Evaporation In Southern Louisiana (Climatology)., Gregory James Mccabe Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

An analysis of pan evaporation by synoptic weather types revealed that pan evaporation rates vary significantly by weather type conditions. Fair weather types are associated with the greatest evaporation rates as was expected, and stormy weather types with the least. These findings are primarily related to the variation of solar radiation by weather type. An investigation of the relationship of pan evaporation to solar radiation by synoptic weather types revealed that the ratio of pan evaporation, expressed in energy units, to incoming solar radiation, also varies considerably by synoptic weather types. In general it was found that stormy weather types …

The Effect Of Educational Technology Variables On Elementary Education Student Achievement (Instructional Materials, Educational Media)., Deborah Scruggs Miller

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine whether educational technology variables differentiate between "effective" and "ineffective" elementary schools. It was hypothesized that "effective schools" use educational media in instruction more frequently than "ineffective schools". It was also expected that "effective schools" use educational media in qualitatively superior ways to "ineffective schools". In addition, it was predicted that "effective schools" would have better prepared teachers in educational media and teachers with more years of teaching experience than "ineffective schools". The sample consisted of fourteen elementary schools located in 12 school districts throughout Louisiana. Each school was determined to be either …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A Mouse Model Of Bovine Pneumonic Pasteurellosis: Dose Response, Temporal Evolution Of Lesions And Effects Of Arachidonic Acid Inhibitors (Indomethacin, Nordihydroguaiaretic Acid, Hydroxyurea)., Lanny Wade Pace

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Outbred Swiss Webster mice were used as an experimental model for bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis. Using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to evaluate lesions, it was determined that intrabronchial inoculation of Pasteurella haemolytica serotype 1 induces dose dependent pulmonary lesions in the mouse. Five x 10('7) colony forming units was the optimum dose which induced lesions and allowed survival for at least 24 hours. Using the optimum dose of inoculum, lesions were evaluated at different time points to determine when neutrophil influx into the lung first occurred. Four hours post inoculation was the minimum time required for neutrophil influx to …

Moral Evaluation: An Investigation Of Developmental Patterns In The Use Of Cognitive Algebra (Information Integration)., Anthony Herman Speier Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Information integration theory suggests that differences in the moral judgments of children and adults is an example of a development process of information integration where younger children employ a unidimensional integration rule, and older children and adults employ multidimensional integration rules. Studies that utilize the information integration approach involve single-episode stories in which two or three levels of intention and consequence story cues are manipulated in a within-subjects factorial design. The present study manipulated two sources of information about the story protagonist, as well as information about his intentions and the consequences. The four variables manipulated were: (a) personal goodness …

The Role Of Task Manipulations On The Invariant Phasing Characteristics Of A Generalized Motor Program (Relative Timing)., Carol Ann Wood

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Four experiments are reported that investigate the role of relative timing as an invariant characteristic of the generalized motor program. Based upon the concept of a generalized motor program, relative time as an invariant characteristic, should remain constant when variant features of a movement are manipulated. In the present series of experiments, a practice and transfer paradigm was used to investigate the influence of required parameter modifications on the relative timing characteristics during the transfer performance of a practiced three-component movement response. Following 150 training trials (100 trials on Day 1 and 50 trials on Day 2), subjects (n = …

Effects Of Job Stress, Coping, And Type A Behavior Among Recently-Graduated Nurses., Brian Andrew Bienn

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A model integrating elements of job stress theory, coping theory, and Type A behavior research was developed and tested in the present study. The model was employed to generate numerous hypotheses concerning proposed relations among job stresses, coping strategies, Type A behavior, and stress-related outcomes. These hypotheses were tested utilizing questionnaire data collected from 136 recently-graduated nurses in ten hospitals. As predicted, Type A was positively associated with job stresses, both Type A and job stresses were related to felt strain and organizational commitment, and commitment predicted turnover intention. Hypotheses concerning the proposed moderating effect of coping on the stress-strain …

The Image Of Walking In Hawthorne's Fiction (Journey Motif, Pilgrimage)., Frances Murphy Zauhar Jan 1986

The Image Of Walking In Hawthorne's Fiction (Journey Motif, Pilgrimage)., Frances Murphy Zauhar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Various scholars have referred to the metaphorical journey in Hawthorne's work. This is the first comprehensive study of the journey image in Hawthorne's fiction. Inquiring into the relationship between the imagery in Hawthorne's short stories and his longer fiction, the study examines the sources of Hawthorne's fascination with the journey motif. Hawthorne uses the journey in his first published work, Fanshawe. Both contrived and derivative of his reading of travel literature and fiction, especially The Pilgrim's Progress, Fanshawe exhibits all facets of the journey-related imagery that Hawthorne employs in his later fiction. Hawthorne wrote his short stories after he wrote …
