Background: Registered Dietitian Nutritionists and other health professionals should be involved in advocacy efforts related to food access and health care. However, education about, and opportunities to actively participate in, public policy are often limited for dietetics students. The goal of this project was to identify how dietetics programs meet ACEND standards relating to public policy in their current and/or accredited program. Methods: An online survey was sent to dietetics faculty at U.S. higher education institutions. Objective: Knowledge and competence in sustainable food systems is a priority in dietetic programs and outlined in program accreditation standards and standards of practice for Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs). However, limited literature exists on how students are learning about sustainable food systems. The purpose of this study was to explore dietetic student experiences and perceptions after the inclusion of a farm-based experiential-learning activity. Methods: A qualitative approach was utilized to explore student reflections following their experiential-learning with sustainable food systems via university-based farms. Students completed sustainable food systems modules and completed five hours on the university farm. Students then wrote …

Background: Peer mentoring programs help students navigate challenges and stressors in their undergraduate education. There is minimal research on the effectiveness of these programs in nutrition and dietetics. Objective: The objective was to explore the perceptions of student mentors and mentees in an undergraduate nutrition peer mentoring program. Design: This qualitative research study utilized thematic analysis of student reflection papers. One hundred students were contacted via email to provide consent to review reflection papers. Reflection papers were collected from 33 students: 11 mentees and 22 mentors. Papers were imported into NVivo qualitative analysis software and coded for themes. Participants: Thirty-three …

Objective: Dietetics education transitioned to competency-based education (CBE) in July 2022. Despite its benefits, managing competencies may be a challenging aspect of CBE for dietetics program and internship directors (PDIDs), yet it is unclear what specific aspects of competency management are difficult. Using design thinking, this study sought to capture the impact recent CBE implementation had on PDIDs by identifying specific pain points (i.e., challenges) related to competency management. The results of this work serve to document such pain points and may be used to generate solutions to address or eliminate the pain points. For example, this research can support …

As requirements for entry-level dietitians advance to the master’s degree level, the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics has published a Future Education Model (FEM). At present, FEM utilizes Competency-Based Education (CBE) for optional program implementation at early adopter demonstration sites. A limited number of CBE programs exist within the field of dietetics, and there is little published literature on its use in this arena. Scholarly sources around my topic were more difficult to find then I anticipated as the Catholic Church's teachings about suicide have been changing in recent years. Being such a controversial and changing topic, I wanted to give as much respect and justice to the victims and their loved ones. While studying the Reconstruction era of the United States, I was tasked with writing a historiography paper. I researched the abolitionist women's suffrage movement through the lens of intersectionality. I gathered resources, journal articles, and books to critically explore the ways historians have employed the concept of intersectionality when discussing the abolitionist women's suffrage movement. With this research, I constructed an annotated bibliography of eight sources. I grouped the following sources into three interpretative categories by how each historian chose to utilize intersectionality as a lens to analyze the movement. I started my historiography paper by gathering and analyzing varied historical interpretations of the formation of public education in the South. These sources ranged over one hundred years from the beginning of the twentieth century to the two-thousands. These sources contradicted each other in many ways due to inaccurate and biased depictions of it from early Reconstruction historians. After analyzing the trends and shifts in historical interpretation on this topic I crafted an argument for which category of interpretation is best. This was based on many factors including historical accuracy, clarity, and level of bias.

My work began by reading Eric Foner’s A Short History of Reconstruction. This allowed me to pinpoint a topic of interest for this historiography. Once I chose the Freedmen’s Bureau, I developed a topic proposal and list of potential sources. Upon my professor's feedback, I condensed this list of sources and created an annotated bibliography. In 2011, the Obama Administration introduced the Dear Colleague Letter (“DCL” or “Letter”), which drastically reshaped the nature and scope of Title IX and redefined how sex-based discrimination is viewed and addressed on college campuses around the country. While the overall intent of the Letter was to address historical mishandlings of sexual misconduct on the part of victims, including sexual assault in higher education, many commentators have expressed the concern that the guidelines aggressively pursued this end without considering several sweeping impacts. In April 2022, the Supreme Court of the United States decided in Cummings v. Premier Rehab Keller, P.L.L.C. that emotional distress damages were not recoverable in private rights of action brought under anti-discrimination statutes. Pursuant to their authority under the Spending Clause, Congress has enacted four distinct anti-discrimination statutes including Title VII, the Rehabilitation Act, the Affordable Care Act, and Title IX. In Cummings, a deaf and blind plaintiff sought emotional distress damages under the Rehabilitation Act and Affordable Care Act after she was denied an interpreter at a physical therapy appointment. Part I of this Comment explores 2001 research by John Donohue and Steven Levitt finding that legalized abortion significantly contributed to a decrease in crime starting in 1991. Part II of this Comment will explore the background of abortion. Part III will highlight the scope of abortion following Roe by analyzing Donohue and Levitt’s abortion-crime link. Part IV of this Comment will succinctly summarize these conclusions.

How Can They Be Silenced? Why Ohio Must Amend Its Civil Statute Of Limitations For Child Sexual Abuse Claims, Mackenzie F. Reiber

Ohio should abolish the civil statute of limitations for child sexual abuse (CSA) claims because survivors of CSA generally recover memories and come forward with allegations well past the limitations period; courts in states that have eliminated the civil statute of limitations for CSA claims do not become overwhelmed by hearing these claims several years past the date of the abuse; and the perpetrator’s constitutional rights are not violated by abolishing the statute of limitations.

“A Document Of Independent Force”: Towards A Robust Ohio Constitutionalism, Nathaniel M. Fouch

On August 11, 1993, the Ohio Supreme Court handed down its decision in Arnold v. Cleveland. The Court held that the Ohio Constitution confers a fundamental individual right to bear arms—nearly 15 years before the United States Supreme Court enunciated a similar right guaranteed by the Second Amendment. Perhaps even more consequentially, the Arnold court declared that “[t]he Ohio Constitution is a document of independent force.” This assertion about the fundamental nature of the state constitution, and the willingness of the Court to engage with and interpret the document on its own terms, breathed new life into Ohio’s otherwise …

The “core” of an engineering degree program typically comprises the concepts, equations, and technical skills needed, as well as their practical application to common problems of the profession. This core is then divided into the “content” that must be covered in each course. It is widely recognized, however, that successful individuals do not thrive as professionals on content alone.
