Program Design And Clinical Operation Of Two National Va Initiatives For Homeless Mentally Ill Veterans, Robert Rosenheck, Catherine A. Leda, Peggy Gallup

New England Journal of Public Policy

In 1987, in response to reports of large numbers of veterans among America's homeless, the Department of Veterans Affairs established two new national health care initiatives, which have seen over 40,000 homeless veterans since their inception. We present here evaluation and treatment data on a sample of 14,000 of them. Because of differences in their design, the two programs vary in the degree to which they emphasize community outreach, homelessness prevention, and the provision of aftercare services to patients discharged from other VA programs. In spite of these differences, veterans treated in the two programs have similar health care problems …

Tenth Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The Tenth Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop (GPWDCW) was held 15-18 April 1991 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The goal was to provide a forum for individuals involved in wildlife damage management to discuss new ideas and recent advances in ecology, technology, public education, and policy. The format allowed for interaction and exchange on current issues, damage control techniques, priority areas for research, public education, and extension activities. The GPWDCW is one of three national conferences (including the Vertebrate Pest Conference and the Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference) that deal specifically with wildlife damage management.

More than 250 people from 22 …

The "Bad Mother" In Law And Literature: A Problem Of Representation, Marie Ashe Jan 1992

The "Bad Mother" In Law And Literature: A Problem Of Representation, Marie Ashe

UC Law Journal

In her Article Professor Ashe explores the model of the "bad," or "unfit," mother in law and literature-the woman whose reckless or murderous behaviors threaten or destroy her children.

She argues that the "bad mother" archetype influences the legal practitioner and shapes the attorney-client relationship. She challenges prevailing interpretations of "zealous advocacy" and discusses the way in which the "bad mother" figure threatens the development of narrative theory. In attempting to address these problems, she explores Toni Morrison's refiguring of the "bad mother" in Beloved as subject, rather than object, of narrative. Professor Ashe suggests applying a similar practice of …

The Dialectical Convergence Of Rhetoric And Ethics: The Imperative Of Public Conversation, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 1991

The Dialectical Convergence Of Rhetoric And Ethics: The Imperative Of Public Conversation, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

Man is a rule-making, rule-governed creature—he is, as Aristotle put it, an animal defined by and within a community of speech. The two disciplines of ethics and rhetoric and the cultural activities they engage are instrumental to this defining activity of human life. If moral life is riddled with ambiguities, theoretical understanding of it is no less plagued with an ambivalent relationship which rhetoric and ethics have to each other, despite their mutual concern with the practical affairs of human beings. To argue a necessary convergence of rhetoric and ethics for an understanding of moral life, it is ironic and …

Inaugural Howard Lichtenstein Lecture In Legal Ethics: Lawyer Professionalism As A Moral Argument, Thomas L. Shaffer Jan 1991

Inaugural Howard Lichtenstein Lecture In Legal Ethics: Lawyer Professionalism As A Moral Argument, Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

The recurrent movement to call or recall lawyers to professionalism is a moral argument. It is an argument made to individual lawyers, a claim among lawyers, that professionalism has to do with being a good person.

I see two aspects to the claim that professionalism is a moral value: one aspect says to a person "be professional." It is an admonition to virtue. The other aspect says to a person, "be in the profession—be of it," with an appeal that seems familiar from other admonitions we have heard to align ourselves with groups that are supposed to make us better …

Oz

Text by Gary Coates. Drawings by Atul Kukreja, Murali Ramaswami, Jay De Shelter, Doaa Passyalia, Diane Fox

The most significant fact about our advanced industrial society is that it is not sustainable. Over the past one hundred years we have created a pattern of human settlements entirely dependent upon constantly increasing supplies of fossil fuels and mineral resources that are certain to be nearly exhausted during the lifetime of someone born today...
