Shattering Stained Glass: Empowering Christian Women To Lead Equitably In The Church And Society, Kaila Catalina Materne Creamer Alvarez
Shattering Stained Glass: Empowering Christian Women To Lead Equitably In The Church And Society, Kaila Catalina Materne Creamer Alvarez
Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects
In today's American Christian culture, it has been my observation that women are still feeling the repercussions of Christian traditions and theologies that have an elongated history of neglecting their authority and leadership. After having a decade and a half of experience working within different Christian communities, there has been an overwhelming amount of evidence to support that there is a strong disconnect between the theology of women’s leadership and the physical, practical, and systematic action of engaging them as leaders. Among these narratives is my own. After having served in a leadership role within an evangelical mega church for …

Gender In Bethel University’S Political Science Department: A Qualitative Study Of The Experiences Of Female Political Science Students, Sarah E. Bylsma
Gender In Bethel University’S Political Science Department: A Qualitative Study Of The Experiences Of Female Political Science Students, Sarah E. Bylsma
Library Research Prize Student Works
In one political science class I took recently, I noticed some interesting behaviors among myself and my classmates...This situation got me thinking about the role that gender plays in politics, and this course gave me the opportunity to closely examine how gender may be playing a role in the Political Science Department at Bethel. Currently, Bethel has no female political science professors, despite intentional efforts to look for female candidates during the most recent hiring process. Statistically speaking, the Political Science Department, which consists of three majors: Political Science, Business and Political Science, and International Relations, is comprised of 45% …

Design For Care In The Peripheries: Arts-Based Research As An Empowering Process With Communities, Satu Miettinen, Melanie Sarantou, Essi Kuure
Nordes Conference Series
Arts-based research (ABR), its potential for participation and collaboration, can create insights and understanding of complex societal structures. It can also be used as an approach to find mindful solutions with peripheral communities. The paper argues that ABR, supported by practical collaborative processes, can offer suitable approaches to design for care by including local stakeholders in community-led development processes. This paper presents a Life Story Mandala tool that enables researchers and art and design practitioners to manage complex societal development processes in a globalised world (Bonsiepe 2006). The tool was developed during two global research cycles in South Australia and …
Art Therapy And Art Education: A Conversation - A Critical Review Of The Literature, Shannon Rogers
Art Therapy And Art Education: A Conversation - A Critical Review Of The Literature, Shannon Rogers
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Art therapists and art educators are continuing to define the boundaries of their professions while finding opportunities for collaboration. While there are limited studies focusing on art therapy with students, the existing research suggests that the interventions that have been done are associated with an increase of self-esteem, ability to communicate thoughts and feelings, and healthy self-expression for students. The topic question investigated in this paper is what are the emotional benefits of implementing art therapy for elementary students within art education? This literature review will explore what few have focused on, the overlap between art therapy and art education. …
Designing A Comprehensive School-Wide Program In Character Development And Leadership For High School Students, Mark C. Reilly
Designing A Comprehensive School-Wide Program In Character Development And Leadership For High School Students, Mark C. Reilly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
All independent college preparatory schools maintain that they teach their students leadership and provide opportunities for character development. In addition, most colleges and universities are looking for students who possess strong character and leadership skills. With few exceptions, the leadership and character development programs of most independent schools do nothing more than provide students with opportunities to lead their peers through election to student government, the appointment of captains on sports teams, or through the leadership of non-athletic extra curricular activities such as clubs, yearbook, drama productions, or Model U.N. Typically these opportunities are supported and enhanced by surrounding the …

The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Educational And Disciplinary Backgrounds Of American Librarians, 1950-2015, Rachel Ivy Clarke, Young-In Kim
The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same: Educational And Disciplinary Backgrounds Of American Librarians, 1950-2015, Rachel Ivy Clarke, Young-In Kim
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
Discussions of diversity in American librarianship usually focus on gender or ethnicity, but historical studies also show a lack of diversity in educational and disciplinary backgrounds. Librarians traditionally hail from the humanities, especially English and history. But as current educational attention shifts to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, are librarians reflecting this change? Anonymized data from ALA-accredited graduate programs from the last five years was collected, coded, and classified to determine librarians’ educational and disciplinary backgrounds and in what ways, if any, they differ from the past 65 years and from the contemporary U.S. general population. Unsurprisingly, we …
From Vitruvian Man To The Avatar: The Second Life Of Humanity, Amy E. Cross
From Vitruvian Man To The Avatar: The Second Life Of Humanity, Amy E. Cross
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Social Virtual Environments (SVEs) have been in existence for as long as we have communicated with others through the internet. Users of social virtual environments are represented by avatars, virtual representations of the users. As technology has advanced, so have the ways in which users can represent themselves online: from user-names in the beginning to three-dimensional, graphic representations used in many gaming and immersive environments so popular today. User representations in virtual environments (commonly referred to as “avatars) become a part of the user’s identity as they interact with others in the virtual environment and with the environment itself. The …
Feelings In Politics: How American Foreign Policy Can Benefit From Interpersonal Communication, Paden K. Stanton
Feelings In Politics: How American Foreign Policy Can Benefit From Interpersonal Communication, Paden K. Stanton
Honors College
Misperception clouds good decision-making in international politics. American foreign policy doesn’t currently allow for ample strategic communication training for the President of the United States to prevent misperception from becoming an issue in international relations. Looking at influential political theorists, it’s easy to discover that they all warn of the detriment that comes with an ineffective communicator in the highest power position in the country.
My research provides an overview of different perceptions formed by the United States and China of each other throughout the Presidency of Donald Trump and his counterpart in Beijing, President Xi Jinping. By analyzing the …
Trauma And Attachment In Sierra Leone, Alli Dellamattera
Trauma And Attachment In Sierra Leone, Alli Dellamattera
Honors College
The purpose of this thesis is to propose a training workshop, called “Attachment Theory Workshop and Self-Paced Refresher Training.” The goal of this training is to increase attachment between caregivers and trauma-impacted children in Sierra Leone. Prior to presenting this training, this thesis first reviews both psychological and sociological perspectives of attachment, with a focus on classical attachment theory. Next, from a sociological lens, I examine the significance of culture and attachment. Then, I contextualize the current status of Sierra Leone, including, the traumas the country has faced, and how attachment is affected by such traumas.
To better implement the …
Are Schools Educating About Poverty? University Students’ Perceptions Of K-12 Poverty Education, Rachel E. Sirois
Are Schools Educating About Poverty? University Students’ Perceptions Of K-12 Poverty Education, Rachel E. Sirois
Honors College
Research shows that there are disparities in academic outcomes between students living in poverty and those who are not. Poverty will affect all areas of a child’s life. There is potential that with increased poverty education in schools, students will come to better understand their role in the causes and consequences of poverty, and in working to eradicate poverty.
Eighty- six undergraduate students enrolled at the University of Maine participated in this study. Participants completed a survey designed to gain insights into their recollection of poverty education during their primary and secondary school years. Results showed that enrolled students did …

Clement And Linda Mcgillicuddy Humanities Center Spring 2018 Report, Clement And Linda Mcgillicuddy Humanities Center
General University of Maine Publications
The Clement and Linda McGillicuddy Humanities Center promotes a broad spectrum of human culture through programs that aim to foster intellectual curiosity, critical reflection and creative innovation. It serves as a locus for humanities research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and meaningful conversations among scholars, artists, students and the public.
Central to the center’s mission is the belief that study of the humanities cultivates compassion across differences, develops empathy, and, in addition to providing a sound training in critical thinking, develops the emotional and intellectual agility needed to brilliantly navigate an increasingly interconnected and complex global landscape.
The center supports lectures, symposia, discussion …
How Many Aims Are We Aiming At?, Joshua Luczak
How Many Aims Are We Aiming At?, Joshua Luczak
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
I highlight that the aim of using statistical mechanics to underpin irreversible processes is, strictly speaking, ambiguous. Traditionally, however, the task of underpinning irreversible processes has been thought to be synonymous with underpinning the Second Law of thermodynamics. I claim that contributors to the foundational discussion are best interpreted as aiming to provide a microphysical justification of the Minus First Law, despite the ways their aims are often stated. I suggest that contributors should aim at accounting for both the Minus First Law and Second Law.
Struck Down And Not Destroyed: A New Way To Carry Trauma, Rebecca L. Weygandt
Struck Down And Not Destroyed: A New Way To Carry Trauma, Rebecca L. Weygandt
Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects
There seems to be an assumption in many Christian communities that suggest people should avoid the experience of pain and suffering. This is often communicated by encouraging those who grapple with difficult realities to have a positive perspective or attitude. As a future leader in the Church, I am concerned about the negative impact of this message on the emotional and spiritual health of people. I am specifically concerned about those who engage in the arduous work of reconciliation and peacemaking and how they can survive the inevitable pain and difficulty of this work over an extended period of time, …
The Black Reconciliation: Finding Restoration Through Healing Circles In A Racialized World, Geneva Ree Taylor
The Black Reconciliation: Finding Restoration Through Healing Circles In A Racialized World, Geneva Ree Taylor
Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects
This thesis will examine the ways in which African American communities can engage in a healing process that will produce personal, relational, communal, societal and global restoration. This project will specifically identify and examine the trauma and brokenness that African Americans experience in a racialized society. To accomplish this, a theological foundation will be established that will help to develop strategies, tools, and skills that can support the process of healing and restoration. In addition, this thesis will explain how current models of reconciliation are not adequate to address the deeply rooted complexities that people of color face in America. …

Close Or Distant Past? The Role Of Temporal Distance In Responses To Intergroup Violence From Victim And Perpetrator Perspectives, Mengyao Li
Doctoral Dissertations
As time distances people from moral transgressions, do affected parties experience a lingering need for addressing the past, or does the need gradually fade away over time? Do people perceive time differently depending on whether the ingroup has committed or suffered the transgression? In two different intergroup contexts, we investigate the role of temporal distance in attitudes toward justice and reconciliation after moral transgressions from the perspectives of both victim and perpetrator groups. In the context of the conflict between Serbs and Bosniaks, Study 1 showed that temporal distance from intergroup transgressions predicted different reactions to the transgression between victim …

Subject Formation, Fundamentalism And Instrumentalist Nationalism In Zimbabwean Politics, Joram Tarusarira Dr.
Subject Formation, Fundamentalism And Instrumentalist Nationalism In Zimbabwean Politics, Joram Tarusarira Dr.
Peace and Conflict Studies
This article argues that despite presiding over a failed economy, the Zimbabwe African Union Patriotic Front (ZANU PF) led by Robert Mugabe, has willing and enthusiastic supporters. There are claims that the large crowds witnessed singing and dancing at ZANU PF rallies are mobilized by force because the attendees do not benefit anything from supporting the regime. In a divergence from the consensus of the literature, this article surfaces other explanations than coercion for the huge turnout at rallies, rented crowds, handouts, and well-articulated election manifestos. The psychological dimension, especially the fundamentalist mindset created by instrumentalist nationalism, is one such …

Racial-Trauma Informed Ministry: A Process For Dominant Culture Ministries To Effectively Engage With Communities Impacted By Racial Trauma, Teylar Greer
Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects
Though the dominant culture church in the United States exists within the context of racialized society, often the church has not directly addressed its unjust and traumatic effects. It is the theory of this project that with a more accurate understanding of racialized society, trauma, and coping behaviors, dominant culture ministries will engage more fully in the process of reconciliation. Therefore, this thesis seeks to lay out a theologically anchored process of reconciliation by which dominant culture ministries can be equipped to respond to experiences of racial injustice and trauma in ways that lead to and facilitate healing, justice, and …

Innovating Reentry Reform: Incarcerated People And Inclusive Innovation, Pamela Joy Stewart
Innovating Reentry Reform: Incarcerated People And Inclusive Innovation, Pamela Joy Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this case study was to explore the opportunities and barriers for Innovation Engineering (IE) practices within the State of Maine’s only men’s reentry center. The center trains its residents in restorative justice (RJ) processes as part of its evidence based practices (EBP) curriculum. The uncommon use of RJ in reentry offers the rationale for considering the center as innovative or “meaningfully unique” within community corrections. Reasoning followed that an innovative program might be open to directly engaging its most successful residents in inclusive idea creation and implementation for the benefit of the center. Innovation theorists hold that …
Redefining Transitional Justice In The North American Context? The Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth And Reconciliation Commission, Evan P. Centala
Redefining Transitional Justice In The North American Context? The Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth And Reconciliation Commission, Evan P. Centala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis argues that a transformative justice discourse needs to be adopted by the current field of transitional justice in order to account for the many developments in the field. Using the case of the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission, it presents the innovative approaches and unique context the Commission operates in, following a transformative methodology to affect fundamental social change through the political, economic, and social structures that allowed the violence and harm in question to pass. Distinguishing itself from a transitional context where regime change exists with an objective to establish democracy, this thesis suggests …
Have Changes In Business Practices And Reporting Standards Changed The Taxonomy Of Financial Ratios?, Thomas Zeller, John Kostolansky, Michail Bozoudis
Have Changes In Business Practices And Reporting Standards Changed The Taxonomy Of Financial Ratios?, Thomas Zeller, John Kostolansky, Michail Bozoudis
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Prior research established a seven dimension taxonomy of financial ratios. Arguably, advances in business practices, changes in financial reporting standards, and technology have affected the underlying relationships of this taxonomy. This study proposes to identify the extent to which the previously identified relationships have changed, and, if appropriate, to establish an entirely new taxonomy of manufacturing industry financial ratios.
In addition, this study substantially improves and extends prior work in two areas. First, it utilizes advanced statistical methodologies and computing technologies that were unavailable to previous researchers. Second, it investigates not only the current taxonomy of manufacturing industry financial ratios, …
Reconciling Hospitality: Building The Skills Of Reconciliation Through The Practice Of Hospitality, Sarah D. Henthorn
Reconciling Hospitality: Building The Skills Of Reconciliation Through The Practice Of Hospitality, Sarah D. Henthorn
Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the question, “Does the faithful embodiment of Christian hospitality that brings those in a social position of power together with the poor, marginalized and oppressed create a reconciled community where all people flourish and are equally valued?” The author explores theological, historic and ethical arguments for the practice of hospitality in order to develop a procedural guide to assist churches in teaching Christian hospitality.
Fifteen pastors were then surveyed to assess the viability of this tool as a means of leading congregations toward the practice of hospitality and the embodiment of reconciled …
