The article will discuss the varieties of potatoes used, the methods of production at different levels of society, and a number of quintessentially Irish potato dishes including boxty, champ, and colcannon, which will be compared with similar potato dishes in other cultures.
The Hidden Dimension Of Nineteenth-Century Immigration Law, Kerry Abrams
The Hidden Dimension Of Nineteenth-Century Immigration Law, Kerry Abrams
Vanderbilt Law Review
Most histories of immigration law are histories of restriction. This emphasis is hardly surprising: beginning in 1875, Congress passed increasingly draconian acts, mostly targeting Chinese immigrants, which ultimately led to the outright exclusion of nearly all Asian immigrants. Then, in the 1920s, Congress enacted quotas aimed at keeping the U.S. population primarily white, with an emphasis on immigrants from northern and western European stock. And throughout history in general, immigration law has focused not only on excluding but also on deporting those immigrants deemed undesirable.
In addition to focusing on exclusion, immigration law history has also been preoccupied with federal …

Vincent de Paul appeared in two nineteenth-century novels. The first was William Henry Anderdon’s Antoine de Bonneval: A Tale of Paris in the Days of St. Vincent de Paul, which appeared sometime between 1857 and 1860. The second was Madame Chervert’s The Galley Slave. An Incident in the Life of St. Vincent de Paul, which was translated into English in 1865. The article gives profiles of both authors and plot summaries of their novels. Antoine de Bonneval introduced Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac to the English-speaking world when biographies of them did not exist in English. Both novels …

Few plants have been as central to the destiny of the nation as the potato (Solanum tuberosum) has been to Ireland. Ireland was the first European country to accept the potato as a serious food crop. From its introduction in the 16th Century, the potato has held a central place in the Irish diet, and by extension, in the culture of Ireland (Choiseul, Doherty et al. 2008:3). Potato growing is very suited to the Irish climate and soils, although both excessive and insufficient rainfall at certain times of the growing season can pose disease risks, the biggest of which is …
Ontology, Epistemology, Axiology: Bases For A Comprehensive Theory Of Law, Eric A. Engle
Ontology, Epistemology, Axiology: Bases For A Comprehensive Theory Of Law, Eric A. Engle

This article presents a comprehensive theory of law founded on correct ontological, epistemological and axiological bases and proposes that monism materialism and holism will have greater explanatory and predictive power than dualist, atomist and realist International Relations (IR) theory have had. The theory, though focussed on IR theory, is applicable to domestic law as well. Western thought has long been predicated on either an ontological materialism (matter determines mind) or an ontological idealism (eidetic realism: mind determines matter). Normally, the materialist view is also monist (reality is fundamentally unitary), whereas the idealist view is generally presented as dualist (reality is …
Content And Citation Analysis Of Interdesciplinary Humanities Textbooks Within A Framework Of Curriculum Theory, Julie Guidera
Content And Citation Analysis Of Interdesciplinary Humanities Textbooks Within A Framework Of Curriculum Theory, Julie Guidera
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze the content of textbooks used in undergraduate survey courses in interdisciplinary humanities to understand the content of the curriculum and how an author's viewpoint shapes the product. By enumerating the texts and images authors and their publishers used to illustrate 20th century culture and the transition into the 21st century, the analysis generated a description of the range of perspectives from traditional to postmodern found in six sampled textbooks. Textbook content provided chronological data, while authors' source citations established identity properties of the works' contributors. Through a ranking system of authors' treatment …
