Water jet propulsion systems have recently developed in vessels and will continue to grow, leading to scour related problems in harbours and marinas. In order to design scour protection appropriately it is vital to understand the characteristics associated with jet flows to inform the prediction of velocities induced. The study is undertaken in two parts; a literature review of research and existing models and a physical model of a water jet propulsion system from a typical ferry. The lid-driven cavity is a well-known canonical problem in the field of analytical and computational fluid dynamics. It is comprised of a square domain of an incompressible fluid with its upper lid has a specified velocity and the remaining wall boundaries are subjected to fixed, no-slip, zero-velocity constraints. The effect of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) on blood flow distribution within skeletal muscle microvasculature is conditional upon regional activation of SNS receptors. Due to a lack of appropriate experimental models and techniques, no study has systematically evaluated the effect of SNS receptor activation in continuously branching skeletal muscle arteriolar trees. In line with previous work, we hypothesize that there will be a spatially-dependent distribution of sympathetic receptor activation along the arteriolar tree. Specifically, we anticipate a progressive decrease of adrenergic activation and a progressive increase of peptidergic and purinergic activation with increasing arteriolar order. The Velocity Contour Weighting Method (VCWM) was developed in Part I to accurately estimate the cross-sectional average velocity of a prismatic channel flow using acoustic Doppler velocity meter (ADVM) measurements of centerline velocity. Here, the VCWM is validated by its successful application to 25 different concrete-lined trapezoidal channels used for irrigation water delivery. At each site, the cross-sectional distribution of velocity is measured by an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV), which is moved horizontally and vertically through a sampling grid. Multiple tests at some sites led to a total of 51 sets of cross-sectional measurements. ADVM measurements are simulated by interpolating …

An algorithm is developed for real-time estimation of the cross-sectional average velocity of a channel flow by using an upward-looking pulsed wave acoustic Doppler velocity meters (ADVM). The Velocity Contour Weighting Method (VCWM) is applicable to gradually varied flows in prismatic channels and requires little to no calibration. VCWM estimates the average velocity as a weighted average of ADVM bin velocities. Weights are based on the velocity distribution sampled by the ADVM. The Point Collocation Non-Intrusive Polynomial Chaos (NIPC) method has been applied to two stochastic synthetic jet actuator problems used as test cases in the CFDVAL2004 workshop to demonstrate the integration of computationally efficient uncertainty quantification to the high-fidelity CFD modeling of synthetic jet actuators. In Case1 where the synthetic jet is issued into quiescent air, the NIPC method is used to quantify the uncertainty in the long-time averaged u and v-velocities at several locations in the flow field, due to the uniformly distributed uncertainty introduced in the amplitude and frequency of the oscillation of the piezo-electric membrane.
