Towards Carbon Dioxide Reduction: Synthesis And Characterization Of Ccc-Nhc Pincer Iron Complexes., Joshua Mensah

Theses and Dissertations

The industrial revolution came with its downside of emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The NOAA reported in 2019 that, of the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere, CO2 contributed to about 80% of the increased greenhouse gases hence the need for CO2 Sequestering and Storage (CSS) and ultimately leading to Carbon Capture and Recycling (CCR) as a viable option to convert CO2 into useful forms. The race to find the best catalyst for CCR has led to the synthesis of many organometallic compounds. Pincer complexes catalyzed CO2 reduction has gained notoriety recently because of the tunability and robustness …

Place-Based Fiction: Tourist Town Stories, Keegan Waller May 2024

Place-Based Fiction: Tourist Town Stories, Keegan Waller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

I first conceived of the idea for this short story collection in my early 20's while working as a ski lift operator, bartender, construction worker, and window cleaner in Park City, Utah. At the same time, I was becoming interested in short fiction through the works of authors like Raymond Carver, Chuck Palahniuk, and Charles Bukowski, whose dirty realism has played a large role in the formulation of my thesis. I intend to write a story collection that moves their genre into a more modern setting. While this collection will not fit perfectly into the dirty realist box, the themes …

Synthesis And Study Of The Complex Compound Of Copper(Ii) Acetylacetonate With 2-Amino-1-Methylbenzimidazole, Daminbek Ziyatov, Kizlarkhon Siddikova

CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

The aim of this work is the synthesis and study of the physicochemical properties of the complex compound of copper (II) acetylacetonate with a 2-aminobenzimidazole derivative. A heteroligand copper (II) complex compound containing acetylacetone and 2-amino-1-methylbenzimidazole was synthesized for the first time. The structure of the synthesized coordination compound was studied by SEM-EDX, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. It has been established that in the complex 2-amino-1-methylbenzimidazole is coordinated monodentately to the copper ion through the heterocyclic nitrogen atom and, in this case, a complex of tetragonal-bipyramidal structure is formed.

Using Quantitative And Kinetic Proteomics To Explore Proteostasis, Nathan Raul Zuniga Pina Dec 2023

Using Quantitative And Kinetic Proteomics To Explore Proteostasis, Nathan Raul Zuniga Pina

Theses and Dissertations

Every cell consists of carefully orchestrated biomolecules such as lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. To maintain internal stability (homeostasis), cells maintain the right amount of these molecules at the right time and at the right place. This process is especially true for proteins since they are the foundation functional units within the cell. Proteins form structures and perform chemistry that bestows cells overarching functional roles. Cells maintain protein homeostasis (proteostasis) by modulating synthesis, folding, and degradation processes (turnover) to maintain the abundance levels for all proteins. This is the foundational kinetic model of proteostasis that is covered in this work, and …

An Efficient And Chemoselective Method To Generate Arynes, Bryan Metze, Riley A. Roberts, Aleksandra Nilova, David R. Stuart

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Arynes hold immense potential as reactive intermediates in organic synthesis as they engage in a diverse range of mechanistically distinct chemical reactions. However, the poor functional group compatibility of generating arynes or their precursors has stymied their widespread use. Here, we show that generating arynes by deprotonation of an arene and elimination of an “onium” leaving group is mild, efficient and broad in scope. This is achieved by using aryl(TMP)iodonium salts (TMP = 2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl) as the aryne precursor and potassium phosphate as the base, and a range of arynophiles are compatible. Additionally, we have performed the first quantitative analysis of …

Features Of Turbulence During Wildland Fires In Forested And Grassland Environments, Ajinkya Desai, Warren E. Heilman, Nicholas S. Skowronski, Kenneth L. Clark, Michael R. Gallagher, Craig B. Clements, Tirtha Banerjee

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Fire-induced turbulence and the feedback into the fire, following ambient changes, differ for forested (sub-canopy) and grassland environments. Here, we synthesize observations from multiple experimental surface fires: two sub-canopy backing fires, one sub-canopy heading fire, and a grassland heading fire. We identify and compare the most essential coherent structures and processes of each case from the turbulent momentum fluxes and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) budget terms. In the sub-canopy burns, turbulent eddies are strongest near the canopy top: high streamwise turbulent flux accompanies low cross-stream turbulent flux and vice versa. In the grassland fire, both streamwise and cross-stream eddies strengthen …

Design, Synthesis And Immunological Testing Of Minimal Oligosaccharide Epitopes For Glycoconjugate Vaccines Targeting Capsular Polysaccharides Of Serotypes 3, 4, 7f And 9v Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Seth A. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

The rise in antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria has led to the need for new methods of combatting bacterial infection. Since the surfaces of bacteria are covered in uniquely patterned capsular polysaccharides, vaccines targeting these polysaccharides have become a popular field of research for protection against pathogenic bacteria. Though licensed polysaccharide vaccines are commercially available, they lack the efficiency to protect patients that are immunocompromised or at high risk because they elicit T cell independent immune responses, resulting in low-affinity antibodies. To elicit a T cell dependent response and thereby recruit B cells that produce high-affinity antibodies, a vaccine was …

Design, Synthesis, And Kinetic Study Of The First Generation Phenyloxadiazole Compounds And The Second Generation Phenyloxadiazole Compounds And Highly Selective Hydroboration Of Alkenes, Ketones And Aldehydes Catalyzed By A Well-Defined Manganese Complex, Haisu Zeng

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis focuses on two projects. In the first project, my goal was to discover a new variant of phenyloxadiazole compounds that could exhibit increased thiol-reactivity during bioconjugation processes. To achieve this, I synthesized several phenyloxadiazole derivatives and subjected them to NMR kinetic studies to assess their reactivity with a model thiol. Based on the results, I was able to identify a phenyloxadiazole analog that demonstrated enhanced reactivity, which included a chlorine atom located in the meta-position of the phenyl ring.

I provided a detailed description of the synthesis and characterization of the newly discovered phenyloxadiazole analog and demonstrate its …
