The research questions asked in this study are twofold; How do students at the University of Dayton who participated in virtual community engagement program articulate and describe their experience? …

Navigating Burnout In Student Affairs Graduate Students Apr 2022

Navigating Burnout In Student Affairs Graduate Students

Stander Symposium Projects

As graduate students begin to enter the higher education and student affairs field, they are socialized to navigate their work successfully, which often includes over-involvement and over-commitment (Allen et al., 2020). Previous studies on student affairs burnout found that intense workloads, low salaries, conflicts between work and personal life, lack of advancement, and lack of continued passion contributed to burnout (Marshall et al., 2016; Mullen et al., 2018; Naifeh, 2019). Although there is a plethora of research on burnout and stress in student affairs professionals, research around student affairs graduate students is mostly absent. The purpose of this study is …

Implementation Factors Of The Social Emotional Learning Language Arts (Sella) Curriculum: Impact On Teachers’ Social-Emotional Competence

Stander Symposium Projects

In recent years, evidence supporting a whole-child approach to education—one that considers not only academic proficiency but also development of social-emotional competence (SEC) as important outcomes of education for students—has mounted. As the benefits of supporting student SEL skills have become more widely known, recognition of the value of supporting teachers’ SEC has surfaced, too. Research indicates a range of positive classroom implications for teachers’ having high SEC, including more effective management of student behaviors and higher quality implementation of evidence-based practices. Existing research demonstrates that schools can support teachers’ SEC directly through SEL-focused professional development opportunities, but it is …

Kinematic Synthesis In The Design Of Continuum Robots Apr 2022

Kinematic Synthesis In The Design Of Continuum Robots

Stander Symposium Projects

Continuum robots are a type of robot composed of multiple sections that bend continuously along their elastic structures. Because of this, these robots are typically referred to as “snake-like”. Due to their soft structure, continuum robots have many significant advantages over conventional serial robots: flexibility, compliance, and dexterity. With these capabilities, continuum robots are well-suited for minimally invasive surgery, search and rescue operations, and a variety of inspection tasks. However, the additional complexity of continuum robots introduces a new set of synthesis challenges as compared to their rigid counterparts. In this research, we focus on the inverse kinematics (IK) problem …

Investigating The Fitness And Survival Of Anaerobic Listeria Monocytogenes Apr 2022

Investigating The Fitness And Survival Of Anaerobic Listeria Monocytogenes

Stander Symposium Projects

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen capable of surviving and growing under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, with anaerobically grown Listeria exhibiting a compromised growth. Under anaerobic conditions, Listeria often encounters fermentation acid, propionate. The focus of this research project is to determine the effects of propionate on Listeria susceptibility to host-derived antimicrobial enzyme, lysozyme. Moreover, because glycerol is a key carbon source for Listeria in a host cell, the impact of glycerol on lysozyme susceptibility will also be determined. Listeria is grown aerobically or anaerobically, with or without the addition of propionate, and then normalized by optical density values. Bacteria …

Media Portrayal Of The Police Resulting In Fatal Citizen Interactions Apr 2022

Media Portrayal Of The Police Resulting In Fatal Citizen Interactions

Stander Symposium Projects

Technology has made news media a universal phenomenon in covering police-citizen interactions. Critics have pointed out biases in their reporting. However, this speculation has yet to be tested empirically. The current study aimed to address this gap by using content analysis to shed light on the media’s dialect when reporting fatal police-citizen interactions. Using content analysis and convenience sampling, the study identified the first 10 articles related to four high-profile cases (i.e., Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, and Casey Goodsen Jr.) from three news sites that encompassed media value in relation to political bias and reliability in relation to …

Cometary Orbits Apr 2022

Cometary Orbits

Stander Symposium Projects

This project describes the behavior of cometary objects in the solar system, specifically their orbital behavior and how the nature of these cometary objects makes them behave the way they do. It has taken scientists many years to study comets and take note of their behavior. The developments arising from their research seems to make more sense on how they came to existence. In the 4th century, a famous scientist deduced that comets are comets are somewhat emissions from the earth that rise to the sky. Later on Isaac Newton noticed that comets revolve around the son in an elliptical …

The Pursuit Of Happiness... In Cash Apr 2022

The Pursuit Of Happiness... In Cash

Stander Symposium Projects

The pursuit of money is the singular driver in a lot of industries. Neoliberalism and capitalism are what drive the upper sectors of almost every performing arts industry and have done so for a long time. It can be seen everywhere from whitewashed musicals, to getting the rights to songs, to the endless unimaginative saga of reboots. There is a dearth of creative drive, in a pursuit of endless money which crushes and dehumanizes everyone who isn't useful in that pursuit; it goes directly against diversity and the common good. My sources will include the Vox article on the In …

Investigating The Role Of Protein Environment On Rare-Earth Metal Binding Via Molecular Dynamics Simulations Apr 2022

Investigating The Role Of Protein Environment On Rare-Earth Metal Binding Via Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Stander Symposium Projects

This project looks into the Lanmodulin protein (LanM) that binds selectively to rare-earth metals in specific binding sites. We look into why this protein is selective to the rare-earth metals if it is depending on the protein environment or the makeup of the individual binding loops in the protein. We approached this question by modifying similar ion binding proteins found in a BLAST search, and replacing the binding sites with the loops found in the LanM protein. After doing so we used molecular dynamic simulations to observe the binding in the modified proteins.

How Macrophages Respond To Cancer Conditions Apr 2022

How Macrophages Respond To Cancer Conditions

Stander Symposium Projects

This project investigates the relationship between human macrophages and breast cancer cells. This project analyzes these differences through the measurement of macrophage migration through artificial channels under different cancer conditions. Macrophages are immune cells that travel around the body and engulf foreign particles. Macrophages can recognize cancer cells as foreign invaders and destroy these dangerous cells. This macrophage migration data preliminarily show that cancer condition media produces a unique macrophage migration response, suggesting that biomarkers released from cancer cells influence macrophage behavior. This project further investigates the differentiation of monocytes into specific macrophage phenotypes based on the expression of specific …
