Abraham Lincoln As A Political Moralist, Carl Willard Ruchte Jul 1954

Abraham Lincoln As A Political Moralist, Carl Willard Ruchte

Student Work

In the eighty-fourth year of this nation's independence, forces so complex in nature that even today they are only partially understood culinated in what then appeared to be an irreparable breach in the Union. During the dark days of the 1860's the future outlook for the Union was extremely foreboding. Victory for the Southern forces would have spelled disaster not only for the North but for the South as well, economically and strategically, as events of more recent days have demonstrated in graphic fashion.

In the future, those areas …

How The Spanish Culture Can Contribute More Significantly To The Social Studies Program Of California Elementary Schools, Samuel Encínas Renteria

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the past, evidence indicates that the teaching of social studies in many places in California has been a perfunctory, superficial type of instruction, For example, early attempts to expose the child to the historical background of California were through a history or geography book. In most cases, the usual procedure was to tell the child to read so many pages and then answer the questions at the end of the chapter. The main objective was to cover the text by the end of the school term and pass an examination over facts with little or no concern for the …

Abolitionist Literature And The Mails In Jackson's Time, Ruth Barrett Jul 1950

Abolitionist Literature And The Mails In Jackson's Time, Ruth Barrett

Student Work

The transmission of abolitionist literature through the United States mails was one of the issues which early involved the national government in the slavery controversy and one which intensified the bitterness between North and South. In spite of the fact that there had been a movement among some southerners, even stronger than any in the North, to eradicate slavery, the introduction of this literature into the South did much to weld the Southerners together as a unit, in defying the North and the federal government--and in defending the doctrine of states' rights and the institution of slavery.

An Ecological Study Of The Negro In Ward Seven, Murphy Cleophas Williams May 1947

An Ecological Study Of The Negro In Ward Seven, Murphy Cleophas Williams

Student Work

The concept of the term "ecology' as it relates to sociology and social research is well interpreeted in Gist and Halbert's book, Urban Society… From the above explanation and from the interpretations of the term "ecology" in the writings of Park and Eurgess and others, we get the idea that an ecological study involves the spatial, selective and distributive functions and melations of human beings in a given geographical and cultural area, and that these functions and relations characterize the forms and types of social interaction.

A Study Of Intra-Urban Mobility In Omaha, Magdalene Pickens Jan 1947

A Study Of Intra-Urban Mobility In Omaha, Magdalene Pickens

Student Work

"Mobility" is moving about, from one place to another. The word urban is from the Latin word, "urbanus", meaning "belonging to a city". "Intra" is a prefix meaning "within", taken from the Latin preposition "intra", which has the same meaning. Intra-urban mobility then, is the moving from place to place of the individual or family within the city. This thesis will treat of the intra-urban mobility of Omaha, Nebraska and its suburban areas, for the period of three years, from 1942 to 1945.

Before 1912, the Nebraska delegates to the national party conventions were chosen by state conventions, dominated the local bosses. The presidential preference primary law now effective for the first time, provided for popular choice of delegates, and left the politicians guessing as to the character of those delegations. There were inclications in October, 1911, that the Nebraska republicans favored William Howard Taft and Robert H. La Follette. The democratic situation was far more complex. The followers of William Jennings Bryan were divided about eqaully between Woodrow Wilson and Champ Clark, while Bryan was friendly to both. Democratic organization leaders, particularly …

The Proposed Four-Year Law Curriculum: A Dissenting Opinion, Philip Mechem May 1940

The Proposed Four-Year Law Curriculum: A Dissenting Opinion, Philip Mechem

Michigan Law Review

A conspicuous and very wholesome manifestation today in legal education is dissatisfaction with legal education. With education in general for that matter. Doubtless the dissatisfaction begins with the general and extends to the particular. The law teacher, that is, observes that the college graduate who comes to him can barely read and write the English language, is scarcely aware that there are any other languages, is wholly devoid of intellectual curiosity, wholly untrained in hard thinking, wholly uninformed about and uninterested in the ideas which make for or against civilization. It makes the law teacher think there must be something …

The Early History Of Omaha From 1853 To 1873, Bertie Bennett Hoag May 1939

The Early History Of Omaha From 1853 To 1873, Bertie Bennett Hoag

Student Work

Having been born and raised in Omaha, I found myself asking the following questions: How did Omaha begin? What were the causes of its growth? Why were early conditions as they were? What were the prospects for future growth and prosperity? The answers to these questions I have tried to find. I have found a great deal of material but I know that there must be much more that I have not been able to locate. The subject with which this thesis deals could and should be treated more fully than I have been able to do here.

An Analysis Of Negro Ritualistic Ceremonies As Exemplified By Negro Organizations In Omaha, Ida Madonna Rowland May 1938

An Analysis Of Negro Ritualistic Ceremonies As Exemplified By Negro Organizations In Omaha, Ida Madonna Rowland

Student Work

This study is an attempt to analyze the ritualistic ceremonics of the Negroes of Omaha. Various interpretations are given to the terms "ritual" and "ceremony." They are often confused and used synonymously. According to the World's Popular Encyclopedia a ritual is an outward act of worship, the performance of certain outward acts, and the use of symbols which become identified with the thing symbolized. Dr. Whitehead says a "ritual may be defined as the habitual performance of definite actions which have no direct revelance to the perservation of the physical organism of the actors."

Benson: A Residential Suburban Community, Dorothy Ruth Mutz Oct 1935

Benson: A Residential Suburban Community, Dorothy Ruth Mutz

Student Work

Before making a study of the social life of a particular area it is essential to classify the area as to type and character with reference to the surrounding area. Various interpretations are givens the terms "community" and "neighborhood", the terms often being used synonymously. The term "suburb", a comparatively recent sociological term, is also open to diverse interpretation. Thus in order to systematize the variety of terms only those interpretations will be analyzed which seem to apply most directly to the area studied.
