Is The Grass Always Greener On The Other Side? An Analysis Of Migration And Retention Of Ohio’S Working Age Population, An Doan, Jamie Goldfarb, George Merrifield
Is The Grass Always Greener On The Other Side? An Analysis Of Migration And Retention Of Ohio’S Working Age Population, An Doan, Jamie Goldfarb, George Merrifield
Case Western Reserve University Journal Of Economics
Analyzing the relationship between average salary of individuals and retention rates of individuals in Ohio, this paper seeks to understand the talent migration trends among those with varying levels of education. A stark contrast is observed between the mobility of people with higher wages than those with lower wages, with a significantly higher percentage of the former leaving the state. The hypothesis suggests that earning higher wages outside of Ohio may reduce the likelihood of Ohio residents staying within the state. The research utilizes a probit regression model to estimate retention probabilities, controlling for age, whether the individual is employed, …

Opioids And The Workforce: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Opioid Deaths And Ohio’S Economy, Annie Castagnero, Vaishnavi Kumar, Allison Su, Junsun Yoo
Case Western Reserve University Journal Of Economics
In 2016, Ohio was ranked third in the nation for opioid deaths. The number of opioid-related deaths was over double the national average (Cooper et al. 2020). By 2021, opioids were involved in nearly 75% of overdose deaths (CDC 2023). In 2023, opioid manufacturers and pharmacies were charged with paying Ohio 679.6 million dollars over the next 15 years, as retribution for their involvement in the opioid epidemic (Ohio Attorney General 2023). One of the reasons for this payment is the impact the opioid crisis has had on the labor market. There is much literature on the impact of opioid …

Manufacturing On Autopilot: Ohio Automation On Manufacturing Wages And Employment, Joanna Chiu, Téa Tamburo, Lien Tran
Case Western Reserve University Journal Of Economics
In 2017, automation was forecasted to see a 47% increase in the next two decades (Bughin et al. 2017). With the usage of algorithms, automation can now be used for more than routine tasks and has the ability to replace labor in cognitive tasks, greatly expanding the range of roles in the labor market it could take on (Frey et al. 2017). With this, there will be the subsequent impacts on Ohio’s economy and productivity levels in manufacturing and productivity. Ohio is a main state in manufacturing, and 7.6% of Ohio jobs have a high level of exposure to automation …

Edchoice — A Reason To Rejoice? An Analysis Of Competitive Effects Of School Voucher Programs In Ohio, Jakob Danninger, Sidharth Jindal, Laura Harris, Nathaniel Page
Case Western Reserve University Journal Of Economics
Ohio’s school choice voucher program, known as the EdChoice Scholarship, has been highly controversial since its inception and the recent 2023 expansion has reignited debates. The economic rationale for this policy is that increased competitive pressure creates higher performing public schools. Previous research has found that Florida public schools performed slightly better due to the competitive effects of school choice vouchers. We use data from the Ohio Department of Education and Google Maps API over the years 2009-2018 to estimate the competitive effects of eligible private schools on public school performance after the 2013 income-based EdChoice expansion. This is achieved …

Honors Projects
In the realm of legal frameworks governing the service and consumption of alcohol, Dram Shop Liability Laws play a pivotal role in holding establishments accountable for the consequences of alcohol-related incidents. These laws, known as dram laws, vary across states, delineating the responsibilities of alcohol servers and establishments in preventing the overconsumption of alcohol and the resultant harm. This examination delves into a comprehensive background of dram laws, particularly focusing on their historical evolution, their present implications, and the imperative need for refinement.
As societal dynamics and patterns of alcohol consumption evolve, so too must the legislative mechanisms designed to …
Without Due Process Of Law: The Dobbs Decision And Its Cataclysmic Impact On The Substantive Due Process And Privacy Rights Of Ohio Women, Jacob Wenner
Journal of Law and Health
Since the overturning of prior abortion precedents in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, there has been a question on the minds of many women in this country: how will this decision affect me and my rights? As we have seen in the aftermath of Dobbs, many states have pushed for stringent anti-abortion measures seeking to undermine the foundation on which women’s reproductive freedom had been grounded on for decades. This includes right here in Ohio, where Republican lawmakers have advocated on numerous occasions for implementing laws seeking to limit abortion rights, including a 6-week abortion ban advocated …

Filling The Potholes Of Pretextual Traffic Stops: A Better Road Forward For Ohio, Jordan Weeks
Filling The Potholes Of Pretextual Traffic Stops: A Better Road Forward For Ohio, Jordan Weeks
Cleveland State Law Review
The Fourth Amendment was one of the driving forces behind the United States Revolution. This Amendment generally protects individuals against “unreasonable” searches and seizures. But what does “reasonable” mean in the context of a traffic stop?
In 1996, the U.S. Supreme Court in Whren v. United States tried answering this question. In so doing, the Court determined that pretextual traffic stops are “reasonable.” Pretextual traffic stops occur where an officer stops a vehicle and cites a lawful reason for the stop, yet the underlying reason is unlawful. The Whren Court determined that an officer’s intent is completely irrelevant to whether …

Bee (Hymenoptera: Anthophila) Richness In Eastern Ohio Pipeline Right Of Ways, Malisa Spring, Gabriel R. Karns
The Great Lakes Entomologist
It is relatively unknown which species of bees utilize pipeline Right of Ways. Most recent Right of Way research focuses on bees found on electrical transmission Right of Ways instead. Ohio is also relatively understudied in terms of bee richness. This project sought to document bees that are found in these pipeline Right of Ways in 4 heavily forested counties in eastern Ohio. A total of 3950 specimens were collected, accounting for 140 species across two years of sampling (2016 and 2018). Overall bee abundance peaked mid-season, with the highest abundance observed in July. The majority of bees collected were …

Ohio Recovery Housing: Resident Risk And Outcomes Assessment, Elyjiah Potter, Bivin Sadler
SMU Data Science Review
Addiction and substance abuse disorder is a significant problem in the United States. Over the past two decades, the United States has faced a boom in substance abuse, which has resulted in an increase in death and disruption of families across the nation. The State of Ohio has been particularly hard hit by the crisis, with overdose rates nearly doubling the national average. Established in the mid 1970’s Sober Living Housing is an alcohol and substance use recovery model emphasizing personal responsibility, sober living, and community support. This model has been adopted by the Ohio Recovery Housing organization, which seeks …

Stakeholder Perceptions Of Community Garden Features, Samantha Trajcevski
Stakeholder Perceptions Of Community Garden Features, Samantha Trajcevski
Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium
The presentation discusses the study currently being conducted on stakeholder perceptions and attitudes towards greenspaces. This is completed through the identification of different uses and features to maximize use of the space and stakeholder engagement in the community garden. To better understand stakeholder opinions, we utilized a creative qualitative research method combining photovoice and interviews/focus groups. We conducted eight in-depth semi-structured interviews and four focus groups. Multiple interviewees agreed that the Dayton View Triangle lacks access to a green space. Most believed that a garden would offer social cohesion. Understandably, most participants were concerned about who would manage the garden …
The Political Divergence Of Ohio And Michigan, Dominic D. Wells, David J. Jackson
The Political Divergence Of Ohio And Michigan, Dominic D. Wells, David J. Jackson
The Journal of Economics and Politics
Ohio and Michigan are demographically similar states whose politics have diverged since 2016. This research aims to explain why these two Midwestern states have taken such different political paths in recent years. A comparative case study is used to examine a number of possible explanations. The results of this research show that institutional factors such as registration and voting laws, redistricting processes, and ballot measures have contributed to the political divergence of Ohio and Michigan. Further, data on policy preferences are compared to show that the differences between the states are not the result of different policy preferences among their …

Unstable Homes Exacerbated By Unstable Courts: How Ohio's Split-Child-Custody Jurisdiction Harms Ohio's Children And Families, Philip Shipman
Et Cetera
Raising a child is very difficult. Add to the difficulty in raising a child the specter of a child custody suit, and you have a recipe that can end in disaster.
In Ohio, child custody is not fair. It is not just. It is determined by judges, whose jurisdiction is determined by whether the child’s parents were married to each other. Under this jurisdictional scheme, Ohio’s children are failed. This failure stems from Ohio courts making their own rules without care to fairness and equality. Within most of Ohio’s eighty-eight counties, juvenile and domestic relations courts can, and do, set …

Reservoir Characterization Of The Utica Shale Play Using Well Log Data In Columbiana, Ohio, Tyler L. West
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Ordovician Utica shale play is rapidly developing throughout the Appalachian Basin. The play is a mixed carbonate-siliciclastic system that grades from primarily carbonates at its base in the Lexington/Trenton limestones into primarily shale within the Utica shale. As of January 2021, it is the third highest-producing dry shale gas play in the contiguous U.S., although it is known to produce wet gas and oil in various parts of the basin. In addition to being an unconventional reservoir, the Utica shale, an informal unit in Ohio where the main fairway is located, is a known source rock for much of …
