The Perpetual Progression In The Schleswig-Holstein Duchy: History, Politics, And Religion, 1460-1864, Christian Anthony Ahlers
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
German nationalism in the Schleswig and Holstein duchies that predates the German Unification Wars of the Nineteenth Century continuously transformed in response to Danish encroachment, civic disputes regarding treaty legitimacy, and war. The Germans in the duchies fought to retain their ancestral homelands and, in doing so, embraced a pan-Germanic consciousness that is the foundation for early modern nationalism. This consciousness dates back hundreds of years. This case study examines the Germans of Schleswig and Holstein and their experiences with the consistent and pressing Danish encroachment. Despite the encroachment, the Germans remained connected with their culture, traditions, religion, and their …

The Dilemma Of Empty Halls, Joanna Lauer
The Dilemma Of Empty Halls, Joanna Lauer
Musical Offerings
Today, live classical concert attendance is low, a fact which threatens the careers of professional musicians. This paper examines recent statistics of classical concert attendance, theories as to why attendance rates are low, marketing methods for target audiences, and finally, recommendations to solve the dilemma of empty concert halls. To encourage concert attendance, classical music must be tastefully marketed to present-day audiences through the experience of technically excellent, musical, and interesting live performances. Ultimately, the relationship between art and its audience (the consumer) reveals that the key to the dilemma is the audience.
Ethics At The Speed Of Business, James A. Doppke Jr.
Ethics At The Speed Of Business, James A. Doppke Jr.
DePaul Business & Commercial Law Journal
This paper discusses several ways in which the Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct, and the Illinois Supreme Court Rules, construct barriers that prevent lawyers and businesses from accomplishing reasonable commercial goals. Often, those barriers arise from outdated concepts, or terminology that does not reflect current business realities. The paper argues for the amendment of specific Rules to enhance lawyers’ and businesses’ respective abilities to conduct their affairs more efficiently, without sacrificing public protection in the process.

Old And New: Intervention In Space And Material, Yoonji Kang
Masters Theses
Hanok is a traditional Korean architecture built with Korea’s unique technology and style. Most Korean people have a positive impression of the Hanok but Hanok is acknowledged as an obsolete form of living these days. The reasons why the Hanok is not widely used are an inconvenience in living due to facilities, difficulty in maintenance, the high cost required for renovation, and its prone to coldness. Therefore, it is essential to modernize the design and construction of the Hanok by reflecting modern needs in a new Hanok. This study investigates the characteristics of the Hanok, the typologies, and how it …

A Stylistic Analysis Of Adrienne Rich's "Planetarium" And "Power", Malek Zuraikat, Ekab Al-Shawashreh, Shrooq Awamleh
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
Adrienne Rich utilizes free verse to surprise her readers by covering the intertwined relationship between politics and society, which results in encapsulating everyday practices in most of her poems. She tries to articulate the depressed voice of women, thus making this group noticeable by people. The study discusses Rich's poems "Planetarium" and "Power", focusing on pronouns, spacing, enjambment, and diction. It explains how the change in pronouns, for instnace, serves the theme of uniting women's experience of oppression and resistance and how the enjambment and the choice of diction are used to add emphasis on women's suffering and their consequent …
The Jewish Dancing Body: Body Image In Jewish Folk Dance, Alexa Berkowitz
The Jewish Dancing Body: Body Image In Jewish Folk Dance, Alexa Berkowitz
Master's Theses
Throughout my life as a dancer, I often wondered if body image issues were purely found in Western concert dance (such as ballet and modern dance) and if folk dance instilled a sense of ownership over one’s body. It was apparent to me that being asked to stare at yourself in the mirror for hours on end in a ballet class, or any other dance style, forced you to see every tiny defect in your body. For me personally, this caused a lot of body dysmorphia and body image issues that I carry to this day. While some folk dance …
Is Faith The Ultimate Divider?: The Intersections Between Religion And Political Behavior In The United States, Ryan Supple
Is Faith The Ultimate Divider?: The Intersections Between Religion And Political Behavior In The United States, Ryan Supple
Honors Projects
This thesis examines the complex relationship between religiosity and voting behavior in the United States. In a country where religion has diminished in importance over time, it seems rather fascinating that it still plays such a large role in the inner-workings of American politics. Chapter One analyzes the varying ways in which scholars have approached emergent political trends between religious groups, particularly with regards to political parties, voting behavior, and government representation. Chapter Two extends this analysis to the American National Election Studies (ANES), a national survey distributed to random samples of Americans during election seasons. The information from the …
Deconstructing Consciousness In Art, Leila Kincaid
Deconstructing Consciousness In Art, Leila Kincaid
Journal of Conscious Evolution
To the extent that art mirrors consciousness, what does the art of any age have to tell us about where we are as a species and civilization? In this paper, I suggest that modern and postmodern art reveal the tendency toward deconstruction, of our identities, as selves, as cultures, as a civilization. Through this process of deconstruction, there is a space offered to us through the experience of art, of freedom to recreate ourselves, our identities, and our sense of purpose and meaning in the cosmos. Grounding the inquiry in texts from various authors in the field of art history …
Revival Today: America’S History Of Biblical Revival And Its Modern Application, Matthew Musser
Revival Today: America’S History Of Biblical Revival And Its Modern Application, Matthew Musser
Senior Honors Theses
There is a need for revival within the church today. Christian revivals are becoming less and less popular in the current times. Is this due to a subtle shift in America’s culture? Or is this decline of religious revival the result of something deeper? This thesis will seek to discover the biblical foundations of revival in American history. First, it will analyze some of the biblical revivals that took place in the Old Testament, Gospels, and Book of Acts. Then it will transition into how these biblical principles have been the cornerstone for many of the great revivals in American …
Modern Tarot Deck, Caitlyn Childress
Modern Tarot Deck, Caitlyn Childress
Theses
The Original Rider-Waite tarot deck has since been reimagined through numerous tarot decks with the intention of modernization and implementing personal interpretations. Through varying versions of the monumentally historical deck, the Major Arcana, a vital part of the traditional tarot deck, has transformed meaning through replacements and substitutions of visual design elements. Existing modern adaptations of the Original Rider-Waite deck have not addressed race and gender perspectives native to the original deck. I recreated the Major Arcana twice, with both groups of cards tailored towards the same user group with ease, learning, traditional meanings, and experience in mind. After creating …

Through examination contextualizing his work within the history and political events of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Choctaw Nations it is revealed how Polk Smith developed a formal language that could navigate both worlds and be viewed through a pure abstraction lens or a lens embodying his Indigenous traditions. In addition to his Indigenous philosophies, Mesoamerican Inca Nation’s cultural motifs further ground Polk Smith’s Indigenous aesthetic, and avant-garde …
Textualism And The Modern Explanatory Statute, Adam Crews
Textualism And The Modern Explanatory Statute, Adam Crews
Saint Louis University Law Journal
The explanatory statute is a largely forgotten legislative tool. Once common, the explanatory statute was a retrospective act that identified an ambiguity or erroneous interpretation of a prior law and then directed the legislature’s view of the correct interpretation.
Although now rare, the explanatory statute is not dead. Just a few years ago, Congress enacted an amendment to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act—a now hotly contested topic—with the hallmarks of an explanatory statute. In the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act of 2017 (“FOSTA”), Congress concluded that courts had over-extended Section 230 immunity to …

Kaleidoscopic Katas: An Intercultural Somatic Curriculum For Holistic Health, Emily Seymour
Kaleidoscopic Katas: An Intercultural Somatic Curriculum For Holistic Health, Emily Seymour
Master's Theses
The intent of this research study was to combine three African and Eastern somatic movement practices into a modern dance curriculum. Few studies have investigated the therapeutic value of subtle body awareness in a dance class context. This integrative study combined psychological, physiological, and contemplative pedagogical approaches, which led to the development of a comprehensive five-part workshop with five adult participants. This ten-hour online class series involved learning a traditional Afro-Haitian serpent dance called the Yanvalou, the Tantric practice of Chakra Yoga, and the Five Animals qigong. The original curricular goal was to combine these three modalities into five sequential …
Of Homespun Opulence: An Analysis Of Jane Freilicher's Pastoral Abstraction In Parts Of A World, Grace Wolfe
Of Homespun Opulence: An Analysis Of Jane Freilicher's Pastoral Abstraction In Parts Of A World, Grace Wolfe
Anthós
During a period of bold abstraction and American individuality, Jane Freilicher’s landscape and still-life paintings stand out for their figurative nature. Her use of color and tone to conjure the simple pleasure of life at home enrapture the viewer in a simultaneously universal yet personal experience. Upon closer inspection of her work, it becomes clear that although figurative in nature, Freilicher’s paintings abstract the pastoral to express identity in an urban environment. This essay examines Freilicher’s 1987 work, Parts of a World, in context with pastoral works throughout art history to understand the ways in which Freilicher both reflected …

International Cooperation In Combating Modern Forms Of Maritime Piracy, Hanan Malaeb
International Cooperation In Combating Modern Forms Of Maritime Piracy, Hanan Malaeb
UAEU Law Journal
Maritime piracy has increased since 2008, posing a real threat to the international peace and security. Therefore, many voices criticized the international legal legislations related to maritime piracy and accused them of being incapable of dealing with this widening phenomenon, being very limited to a few articles contained in the United Nations Convention for the law of seas of 1982. That criticism necessitated to study all the international legislations related to piracy, which were issued before and after 2008. As a result, we noticed that all the international conventions related to the sea and the international resolutions issued by the …
The Benefits Of Dating Apps, Valeria Beltran
The Benefits Of Dating Apps, Valeria Beltran
2021
Online platforms such as Tinder, where one swipes through nearby potential partners until there’s a match, have completely taken over dating in the modern world. With its benefits and drawbacks, online dating has become more common over the years for users of all ages. Although many may focus on the negative sides of dating apps, there are plenty of positives that make the apps desirable to its users. The ability to find potential partners from one’s phone at any time while also determining what that relationship will entail before meeting face to face are both beneficial aspects of dating online. …
"The Greek Gods Don't Exactly Show Up For Their Kids' Basketball Games": Adapting Epic Convention Through Family Dramas In Rick Riordan's The Last Olympian, Hannah Mcginnis
Capstone Showcase
Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians saga bridges the gap between ancient myth and modern coming-of-age. In this article, the assertion that The Last Olympian is essentially an epic for the new generation invites an examination of the Homeric-heroic tropes and characteristics which are attributed to Riordan's characters. This analysis explains that through the combined motifs of time, age, and family, Riordan actively adapts and subverts these Classical conventions into a modern mythography for young readers.
Making Christian Art In A Contemporary Setting, Raven Cordy
Making Christian Art In A Contemporary Setting, Raven Cordy
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Over the past 4 and a half years, I have studied contemporary art and seen countless artworks being made in an academic setting. In doing so, I have come to the realization that religious content is rare in today’s time. While it is not actively discouraged, the environment I am in and the current art community does not seem to be particularly interested in merging the two concepts. Without understanding why, I subconsciously kept art and my faith as separate entities for the first few years of my higher education. But as I matured and developed my own artwork, I …

The Specific Areas Of Strategic Management Of Higher Educational Institutions, Obidjon Khafizovich Khamidov, Otabek Siddikovich Kakhkhorov
Scientific reports of Bukhara State University
The article discusses specific areas of strategic management in higher education institutions. The central challenge of creating a sustainable economy today remains the efficiency of investment in human capital, which is a key factor in determining economic growth, living standards and quality of life. In modern conditions, the general revision of the socio-economic importance of education, the role of complex labor is promoted by the theory of "human capital" more than others, which considers the general and specific knowledge of employees as the most important factor in increasing production efficiency.
Creationism And The Armies Of The Night: A Response To Dr . Isaac Asimov, John M. Reynolds
Creationism And The Armies Of The Night: A Response To Dr . Isaac Asimov, John M. Reynolds
Proceedings of the International Conference on Creationism
Modern society has an educational bias against the teaching of creation science in the public schools. One popular argument against creation science has been provided by Dr. Isaac Asimov. His argument rests on the notion that creationism is bad science and that creationists and creationism are a threat to national well being. The arguments advanced by Dr. Asimov are found to be seriously flawed. Based on the case presented, there is no reason to keep creation science out of public schools.

The Breakdown Of Philosophy And The Modern Evolution-Creation Debate, Ellen Myers
Proceedings of the International Conference on Creationism
All non-biblical philosophies break down to the extent that they depart from the God/Creator of Scripture . Today we witness the breakdown of non-biblical philosophy. It flounders due to its own faulty premises. This paper considers the most important aspects of the breakdown of non-biblical philosophy from the biblical creation perspective.

Part II of this article will focus on validity of potential copyright protection in internet memes. It will start by describing the increased monetization surrounding memes and how this monetization calls for greater interest for meme creators to protect their work. It will then describe the merits of individual copyright interests in internet memes.

Modern Yoga In America, Emily Parkinson Perry
Modern Yoga In America, Emily Parkinson Perry
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Yoga’s immense growth and popularity during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, along with its proliferation into countless varieties and styles, presents teachers, students, and scholars with the question: “What is yoga?” Answering this question requires the investigation of a number of cultural, historical and philosophical tensions at play in modern expressions of this ancient tradition: (1) Is modern postural yoga (MPY)—the yoga widely practiced in studios across the country today—an authentic expression of yoga or is it simply another form of physical fitness? (2) Does the modern focus on the physical dimension of yoga forsake its original purpose of …
Raphael Soyer And His Responses To The Ascension Of Abstract Art, Eric Matthew Friendly
Raphael Soyer And His Responses To The Ascension Of Abstract Art, Eric Matthew Friendly
Theses and Dissertations
During the 1930s, Russian-American artist Raphael Soyer (December 25, 1899 – November 4, 1987), a committed realist, was one of the preeminent artists working in the United States. However, with Abstract Expressionism superseding American Scene Painting as the dominant mode of expression during the 1940s and 1950s, Soyer and his contemporaries went from enjoying the esteem of the New York art world, to being outmoded by abstract artists. Reacting to the ascendancy of abstract art, Soyer sought to restore himself and his fellow representational artists to preeminence, attempted to dismiss abstract art as being antihuman while asserting the humanism of …
